Scholars who have carefully studied the Book of Mormon have discovered fingerprints of ancient Hebrew. These examples of distinctive Hebrew grammar are called Hebraisms. These are phrases or literary forms that might come across as clunky or unnatural English, but actually reflect an original text influenced by Hebrew.

I was raised Jewish and when I read the BoM, all I could see was the Hebrew. I knew it was true. I can’t explain it very well because it was a spiritual testimony and like a language testimony but they merged with me. Just passed 22 years in the Church.

I was listening to a hebrew bible scholar (non-LDS) talking about near-eastern names - identity, naming authority, new names, hidden names, etc. One thing I thought was interesting was that upon receiving a name a person could be adopted into a group, but if their name is "blotted out" the person loses their place. I just thought this was so cool because in the church we have all these conventions - BoM names with meanings, authority to give names, giving new names, hidden names, adoption into God's family, blotting out of names, etc. Blotting out of names i thought was particularly interesting. The BoM uses the exact language. Mosiah speaks of "a name that never shall be blotted out," Alma that "names of unrighteous are blotted out," etc. How could Joseph Smith have known about all these Hebrew naming conventions? Powerful!

I've seen a lot of opinions agreeing that he couldn't have made it up, therefore it must be of the devil because that's the only way something so convinving but essentially false could have been written. If so much of the BoM didn't preach of Christ and the atonement, it'd be an interesting take.

Its not the only explanation. "and it came to pass that after we had translated116 pages that he desired to carry them to read to his friends that peradventure he might convince them of the truth therefore I inquired of the Lord and the Lord said unto me.." Thats from Joseph's 1832 first vision, its the same way Nephi talks.

@@kuriju88 eh, have you read anything else from the time? It also sounds a lot like that. But for those specific phrases, everytime I watch/read Jane Austen I take a lot of the phrases and vocab from it. Heck, I take a lot of the phrases and vocab from whatever literature I'm into as do most people. So likely there's a connection, just the other way around.

@@kuriju88 Ever written a limerick in school? You're given a pattern to follow that makes it a limerick. Now, a continent away and hundreds of years from the first limerick, we still follow the same style. But you didn't learn from the first limerick, but what you write looks like them. It's a shared culture. Likely the examples you cited have a common root.

"It came to pass" is also a reference to a past event. Nephi started writing the "other" or small plates 30 years after leaving Jerusalem. As he recounts past events, he uses the phrase, "it came to pass." However, after the events in the Book of Mormon catch up to real time for Nephi, he stops using this phrase because he is no longer talking about past events. When we reach the Words of Mormon, we are now hearing Mormon recount past events among the Nephites and Lamenites and he again uses the phrase, "it came to pass," many times. That is, until we reach the Book of Mormon within The Book of Mormon and we reach Mormon's real time. He then stops using this phrase. Quite the compelling internal evidence!

I have to add that a 21 year old could have never kept such a complex storyline straight! Let alone an uneducated 21year old! I mean the story of the Nephites, and the Lamanites, brother of Jared, Mulek and his people, Zeniff’s people and Alma the elders people. How would such a young man keep all that straight and yet it flows perfectly without a single detail lost. Also, there were very few libraries around his childhood home, and NONE of them have any record of him visiting them at any time during his life as they recorded the names of all visitors and those who checked out books. One last thing, when I was about 23, I became friends with a wonderful lady named Alma. Her and her family crossed the American border when she was a young child from Peru. I asked her if she was LDS? She was like no, why? Cause the name Alma is popular in our culture was what I told her. She thought that was weird cause it was a very common name where she was from. She knew nothing of the church. I just thought that was very interesting.

Irenaeus in the second century wrote that Luke and Mark were disciples of Peter and Paul and wrote their Gospels according to Peter and Paul. Originally in the Language of the Greeks. Paul was after all known as the Apostle of the Gentiles, and Peter started a ministry in Rome. So it is natural they would use the language of the Gentiles. Irenaus wrote that Matthew originally wrote his Gospel in the Language of the Hebrews. I believe that if you study the language roots of Matthew, vs. Mark and Luke, you should find Hebraisms in the Gospel of Matthew, where they will hardly exist in the Gospels of Luke and Mark. But I am no scholar on it.

Jesus is a Greek translation of Yeshua. Yeshua is Hebrew. Christ is Greek. It means anointed one. His name Yeshua literally means Salvation in Hebrew. Can you find that scripture that says His name is "salvation?" Our Church's Name is: The Church of Yeshua (Salvation) Messiah (The Annointed One) of Latter Day Saints.

In the second century Irenaeus wrote that the Gospels of Mark and Luke were originally written in Greek, because Mark and Luke were Gentiles and disciples of Peter and Paul. Irenaeus wrote the Gospels of Mark and Luke are the Gospels according to Peter and Paul. Since it comes literally from the horse's mouth that these Gospels were originally written in Greek, then it should also come as no surprise that the name Jesus Christ was also originally written in Greek in these Gospels. So Jesus Christ is literally a correct translation of the original Script.

A few interesting points left out which I've noticed with my novice knowledge: The Late War had 81 references of "and it came to pass"... contemporary to Joseph Smith's time. The First Book of Napoleon had 14 references of "and it came to pass... contemporary to Joseph Smith's time. For Mormon apologists, the Hebrew word "wayehi" allegedly means "it came to pass" when translated to English, but The King James Version of the Bible where it "it came to pass" likely originated from was largely a mistranslation. The prefix "wuh" means "and". "Yehi" means "became" or "happened", giving us the kings proper English translation of "and it came to pass". It sounds lofty and stylistic, but its no more special than someone saying, "and then" in a modern English sentence. The majority of instances of the over 800 "and it came to pass" in the KJV OT were mistranslations of the simple word "and" or other compounding words. *_I doin't think that's a strong point._* Jasmine references the Tower of Babel which brings up a problematic point. The Book of Mormon teaches a literal Babel story which goes to a 6,000 year old earth, which I think any rational person would not agree with. So, either the Book of Mormon is literal, or it isn't. If it is meant to be literal, it's a problem. If its not meant to be literal, it's a problem. The reference about making different words from the same root is not unique to Hebrew... I mean, we build buildings, sing songs, pipers pipe, drummers drum, we dump at the dump, we shop at a shop, escorting escorts, facing faces, fear fear, etc... *_If these are the most compelling evidences, I feel bad for the field of Mormon apologetics._*

I don't mean to be contradictory but Joseph Smith actually copied alot of the bible in the BOM. Joseph was very educated on the bible and taught very contradictory doctrines as his life progressed. Jesus said my words will never pass away however according to Joseph they did and that he had to restore a gospel Jesus nor the apostles taught. The temple rituals the melkisedek priesthood and many other things that Mormons secretly do have nothing to do with the gospels at all. They have to do with masonry and not gospel ordinances. Jesus claimed to be God while Joseph said otherwise. Very different gospel different religion than the church that Jesus established.

The truth is the BOM is like the Quran, a false revelation. It has no archeological or historicity within it. Joseph Smith came to write this book after being nearly illiterate and encountered an angel. The apostle Paul writes in the letter to the Galations in the first century warning them about turning to a different gospel. In verse 8 of Galations, Paul says "But even if we or and angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, a curse be on him!" Mormomism is just that another gospel from an angel. Please, your eternal life depends on this. Joseph Smith is a false prophet.

Sorry, but Rabbi Joe Charnes has specifically said that these hebrewisms do not prove that the BOM is an ancient text or that it was influenced from ancient text beyond the KJ Bible. You are being deceptive and taking advantage of the kindness of a man who is working hard in the interfaith community. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
