Check out Australian Band called Silverchair They have some of the best Drop D riffs of all time. They started off as a Nirvana Imitation in some ways. They won a Radio Contest while still in Highschool. Their First album is Frogstomp. Definitely check them out for Drop D riffs. I dont know how well they are known Globally but they kick arse. I'd start with songs like Freak, Madman, Israels Son, Pure Massacre, Leave me out All have great Drop D riffs.

Smashing Pumpkins were never grunge! They are/were a shoegaze influenced altrock band from Chicago that happened to come to prominence around the same time as the Seattle grunge bands did and got pumped into the same 'genre' by lazy journalists despite really not sounding nor looking very similar to much of what really defines grunge.
