Oh man, being married for 38 years, I felt this.. but imagine the possibilities. You don’t have to compromise any more. You can have purple, pink, black or acid green. For art, get some postcards that grab your attention and frame them.. etc. wishing you much luck in your new phase of your life.

I agree about color. Years ago in my first house, I wanted to paint my hallway like this beautiful terra-cotta. I let my friend and the lady at the paint store talked me into getting a much lighter version of the color because they thought it would be too dark. My whole house was peach! It made me sick, I honestly couldn’t stand to go in there. I didn’t want people to visit. And finally, one Saturday went to a paint store and bought 5 gallons of paint and spent Saturday painting over every bit of peach. I honestly couldn’t even think straight with it on my walls.

My favourite “colour” additions are two 5x8 abstract watercolours. I picked up two lovely frames, some room coordinating watercolour paint, and spent the day playing with mixing paint with my niece and nephew (both pre-school age at the time.) When we were done, I asked them to pick their favourites. I put them in frames and up onto the bookshelf. For about $25 and an afternoon with a couple of my favourite people, I have art that makes me grin every time I see it!

I really love my home. Things that make me sad about it, is that we don’t have the money at this time in our life to have all the walls re-painted. I’m happy with white (even tho I’ve always loved color for bathrooms and bedrooms) but we don’t have a chance to have them done before we moved in 4 years ago. 😮. Also, I’m so glad you explained how you can like someone’s home that is totally maximalist but need my home minimalistic! That one really hit home with me. 😊 Thank you, Kiva, great video!

Neutral palette is very flat for me. I love having colour around my home. My home has 4 bedrooms and each one has a different coloured accent wall: blue/indigo, dark green, cherry red and honey yellow. The accent colour is repeated in the decor, bedding and wall art for rhythm and cohesion. My bedroom has a deep cherry (blue undertone) accent wall but is balanced with a muted smokey olive green upholstered bedhead. So each room has its own positive vibe but not overwhelming to my senses. In the open plan space (kitchen, dining and lounge room) l have warm white walls and colours come through in the wall art, cushions, throws and rug. I daresay a person who enjoys neutrals, may find my eclectic home over stimulating. Sentimental objects tied to sad memories is something l've gradually learnt to let go without guilt. This alone has made my home feel more peaceful. Totally agree with opening the curtains and letting natural light in. Sunlight improves a 'down' mood.

I accidentally bought a paint colour because the name sounded nice and it was a pale off white, however, it turned out to be a grey, I lived with it for a while but it was making me depressed every time I woke up in the mornings it was then I realised the power of colour especially the wrong colour for you. As soon as I changed it all was fine.

Natural light is such a huge one, I moved from an apartment that only had windows on the east side, and I’m not a morning person! Now we have light coming from the west and the north and holy crap, I feel sooooooo much better. Just like a little looser and better able to deal with shit lol😊 Edit: the idea of just picking a design style is WILD to me. But I do understand that not everyone has strong feelings about these things lol I just can’t imagine it

Light is a huge thing for me. Living in AZ we try to keep curtains/blinds closed to reduce cooling costs but if I’m in the room all curtains and blinds have to be open or else I feel like I’m in a cave.

@@KivaBrent Is there a certain size/ height they should be? The end tables have a grey metal base and marble top, and not smallish. Should the lamp be grey metal as well, could I do gold metal. My furniture is new. About 3 years old and modern. Three years without lamps. Could I just use floor lamps and keep the tables for "other stuff". Are fabric lamp shades too traditional for modern furniture? Oh the anxiety! This is for my sunroom.
