I was an instructor at the Scout Sniper Pre-course at div schools at Pendleton. It was a 1 month crash course that crammed everything from the Scout Sniper Basic Course. It was a 99% fail rate, but 99% of the Marines that attended that Prep course passed Scout Sniper School first try. If I remember right when I went to Sniper school, we only had 1 person fail for shooting, 1 guy got a DUI and was dropped, 17 failed stalking and we graduated with like 14 guys. Scout Sniper school and Infantry Squad Leaders course were the 2 hardest courses I attended. Stalking and night land nav kick everyone's asses consistently. Oh...and the 35 pound 🐖 eggs...

Feels like the same traits as cross country running. 6 miles a day in the forest, in the mountains, any weather, off trail plenty. Solitary endurance. Small teams for races, can throw elbos so formations are important, and all the discapline and cohesion that comes with that. Proper form and diet or injury. I'm starting to wonder if my coach was military and hid it well. Clearly scout snipers are on a different level but if I were a recruiter that's where I'd look first. My respect and admiration is immeasurable. I can barely even begin to imagine how tough it is.

Wish the Marines had more preps like training that can prepare them with the knowledge to go in sniper school. You mention grit and experience as a Marine and I agree 100 percent. Guys that's been in for a while will have more success than younger Marines. I just want Marines to have more success in pursuing their careers in the Marine Corps. Failing is a part of life but giving up kills motivation.

There used to be a Pre-Scout Sniper Course offered in both West and East Coast for quite a while that compressed a lot of the essential training into a much shorter timespan and was also brutally demanding. Its purpose was to help reduce the high attrition rate in the main Course but was recently disbanded due to the feel that it was not needed. Nowadays, it is entirely dependent on each unit to train their own guys for the Scout Sniper Course, and with the given ops tempo, it can be generally difficult to do. With the new Force Design Readiness 2030, we can possibly see an end to this MOS as there is no possible future outlined for it. Suffer Patiently, Patiently Suffer

The rifles shown are the legacy 7.62 x 51 Remington 700 actioned rifles with Mc Millen stocks. They are being phased out in favor of the new BARRET MRAD sniper rifles in several cartridge configurations. The Army is moving toward the Hornady/Army developed .300 PRC cartridge.

great but what is the "grit" items? is it a subjective rating by cadre? Spear evals?

When I was with Kilo co. 3/3 if you had a PFT score below a 260 you were put on remedial PT. My platoon average was around the 280s. Forget it if you got a 2nd class PFT, we pushed you into supply or FAPP'd you out.

One point is be able to communicate verbally in person, on radios of all issued types and in writing. Know all alternate means of communicating when radios are unserviceable or are compromised. Be ready to out slink a snake in dry leaves without being heard.

Who is the first superior that you should tell you want to attend scout sniper school, how likely is it you will be stationed in California if you enlist from the west coast?
@RedxCode2 жыл бұрын
Getting stationed in the West Coast is completely dependent on MOS and the needs of the Marine Corps so there is no guarantee there. As for Scout Sniper Course, you have to be an 03XX (minus 0313) assigned to a Scout Sniper (or STA) Platoon in an Infantry Battalion, be a Recon Marine, or Raider to even attend it. None of those are easy routes so be prepared for them both physically and mentally. Going to Scout Sniper Course is entirely based on your performance in your current unit and open slots for the Course. Someone who is not considered proficient in precision fires, fieldcraft, and/or R&S will most likely not get recommended by their unit to attend it, so you need to really prove your worth in order to get a chance at it. Units don't want to send people who just fail since it's a waste of resources. Second chances are very uncommon so most who fail once usually don't get a chance to go again unless the unit's ops tempo allows for it. Nonetheless, if you haven't passed boot camp yet, worry about that and infantry training first. Just don't quit and give it your all and you can reach it. Suffer Patiently, Patiently Suffer
