Just so you know magical realism is NOT a subgenre of fantasy, it is a completely different genre. And thanks for the recs. I would recommend you to check out "Summer of Salt" and "Midnight at the blackbird Cafe".

@Afia Ayub Samirah - i understand magical realism or mystical realism, as you do. It has not to do with fantasy, thus ‘realism’, (I, myself, do not care for fantasy.) And, is certainly not stories about magic. It’s a story-telling technique or style the comes from old tradition of spoken word story-telling, that was customary in certain cultures and languages, ( ie. Spanish, Portuguese and Creole, and from the West Indies and East India, are some I’m familiar with) whereby the story-teller uses prose that requires the ‘listener/reader’ to suspend their disbelief as the story-teller uses ‘mystical episodes,characters,occurrences, and parallel ‘story-lines’ , usually when telling the difficult or painful aspects of the story by inter-weaving selective elements that are ‘mystical’ in nature’ to describe the events and trauma or sometimes just using ‘creative license’ , in this ‘stylized way of story-telling. Is almost akin to lore, and using ‘allusions that are fantastical but inter-twinned’ into very real elements of a story. - I am going to look for your suggestion. I know I’ve read a few books of this genre, many many years ago, but I no longer have the books, and am not certain of all the exact titles, other than one of my unforgettable, favourites: 100 Years of Solitude; and a film, that I really enjoyed, entitled: Beasts of the Southern Wild (NOT the book by Doris Betts)- set a basin in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana near the shoreline, prone to flooding. A very young girl, of approx 5yrs old, living w/ an alcoholic father, in abject poverty, who’s determined to save her father and herself - whilst living w/ almost zero care, surrounded by rising waters called, “the Bathtub” co-existing with mystical beasts who appear at times, among the other, very life-threatening hazards. This film is narrated by,and the story told in the voice & from the perspective of, the young daughter. It is just a fantastic story of survival, that requires, ‘magical realism’ to depict the surreal horror and hopelessness and also, to provide any chance to for the main character to control her life. Unfortunately, the story(book/short-story?) this film is based upon, entitled Juicy and Delicious by Lucy Alibar was panned by critics, and said to be completely inferior to the film. (The film IS amazing at ‘telling an authentic ‘magical-realism’ style, story.) If anyone every finds this ‘rare, independent movie’, and loves ‘true’ magical realism, it IS a ‘must see’! Is so well-done, the story-telling, the cinematography and, the actors are incredible. @Afia Ayub Samirah, I appreciate your recommendation, Thank you very much. 🙏 If anyone knows of any other ‘true magical-realism titles, please post them here. ☮️ 💕

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrel was amazing, and the BBC TV adaptation was surprisingly brilliant! I'm blown away by the fact it was her first novel. So excited for her second one coming out this year called "Piranesi" it sounds sooooo good. The people in the trees sounds really interesting, added to my TBR!

If I were to put in my two cents for a recommendation, I would suggest The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender. It's a really short book but it's incredibly well-written with arguably the best prose of any book of the last decade and is a really poignant and heartfelt story. Hope you like it!

I actually read Ava Lavender and didn't like it. But that was before when I wasn't into magical realism, so I might re-read it one day. Thank you for the recommendation! :)

@@AStarlessReader For starters you should definitely try "Norwegian woods" ✌🏼 And then dive into "Wind-up bird chronicle" and "1Q84". After reading these you wont look back to other authors for magical realism 🙂

Is this genre same as slice of life?
@AStarlessReader
@AStarlessReader 3 жыл бұрын
It can be. Magical realism basically means there are some supernatural or magical elements in the book. The book can be a slice of life, but it doesn't necessarily have to. :)
