Actually the fence helps because cactus is less likely to fall into the other cactuses. And I don’t think that cactuses can go above the fences consideribg theyre 1.5 blocks tall. You can always put another fence on top

I use the Berry Bushes as fencing, Easy to get, a food source, most mobs wont touch it, if they do it hurts, and i can jump over it.

Or you could build a forcefield: Dig a border 4 blocks deep around your house. Place signs on the topmost block of the hole and then place carpets on it. You can walk over it but mobs can't, unless they fly/climb/cram their way in or spawn inside (they can't get out now).

I had a setup that I made with a friend that was similar to the third one. It was a row of chambers with villagers in them, crops, and a dispenser with water. We had a big Redstone clock hooked up to all the different chambers (they had different foods). When the clock activated the water ran down the chamber's floor and the flood flowed towards a hopper from where it flowed into chests in a big underground base. We had a chamber with potatoes where before going to the chests they went to furnaces to get cooked, and then into the chests. For fuel (furnaces) we had a kelp farm that automatically put them in furnaces to get dry kelp and then into the other furnaces to act as fuel. Though, if we were playing on the future versions or a modded server we probably would've made the kelp autocraft into a block for more efficiency.
