The reason that FWD race cars have wings is because a lot of them have narrower tires at the back, or are just generally set up to turn in aggressively, to overcome the inherent understeer. Saying that front wheel drive cars don’t need rear wings is like saying rear engined cars don’t need front splitters.

The reason Louvres exist on mid engined cars is for cooling, the Miura originally had a glass engine cover but it would steam up and the engine would overheat too. They solved this issue by creating slats to replace the rear window, not only helping with cooling but making it easier to see out the rear. It’ll be the same with other mid engine cars that have them, for engine cooling purposes while keeping visibility

Nice video, I’ve been raging about this for a while! :) As a heads up, the roof spoiler at 9:21 is functional (ish). Note how unlikely the others, this one follows the contours of the roof and is shaped like an aeroplane wing (generating arguably a little lift). Like ‘Fox ears’ on single seat race cars (eg formula student cars) that go behind the front wing to redirect airflow down into the radiators (like lift), this redirects air down under the rear wing, generating more downforce than the lift it produces. However it’s uncommon as VGs often do the same job. :)
@vigneshkannan39213 жыл бұрын
1) According to Lamborghini, They are vents for the engine cooling since not closing that up will help the hot air escape easily...... 2) The more downforce meant more corner grip and hence speed. So, you don't need to slow down as much as the other cars and more corner exit speed....... 60-80 is easier than 40-80................ 3) Just like the top part and is passes through it too(which most people forgot). Making it flat/easier for air to flow will also increase the downforce. It is easy and one of the first thing to do if you're modifying your car (for racing and not for show/rice). Not a long time follower. Just stumbled upon one the other day............and love your videos............... Please do a video about wheels (sizes and width) and the misconceptions regarding it......
@heylolp93 жыл бұрын
if you need down force at slow speed you have to basically go full tilt on the aero package to find a way to still create the amounts of grip you need also at slow speed the aero efficiency is less important with efficiency i mean that it doesn't matter if the aero package creates lots of drag at higher speeds as you aren't expecting to reach that speed there is a reason why in racing there always has to be a balance between high attack angles and enough aero for the corners and still having low enough drag for the straights if you don't have high enough straights for drag to hurt you lap time more than you gain in the corners then a more aggressive aero package might help

Vortex generators actually increase turbulence but in a good way. They use the turbulence created by the vortex to delaying flow separation (air detaching from the body of the car, increasing drag). This also improves airflow over spoilers.

I agree of course but you didn’t specifically address what I think is the number one reason why some people don’t think wings on FWD cars are unimportant. That is a wing will add a ton of downforce over the rear but you need the most grip at the front since that’s where the power and turning are. Downforce doesn’t work in isolation and more in the back will increase the downforce over the entire car in general.

Most drag racers still don't use wings just because they do create drag, so if they do need a little bit extra grip in the back they just run just a spoiler. The only exception to the rule is top fuel drag racers, but it's mostly because there is literally nothing to the cars and they're going 4 second quarter miles at 300 mph.

So something I found too is some people think fwd cars dont need wings because they think the downforce onlynneeds to be pushed into the part of the car that the wheels produce power. vortex generators are like those little water spouts on the edge of pools with high dives that disrupt the placement of the water, reducing drag, and therefore making entry smoother as it prevents the molecules from aligning in such a way that would make hitting the water like running into a wall. in this case, it breaks up airflow to reduce turbulence and therefore drag.

There are a few notable exceptions to the idea that a roof spoiler in combination with a rear spoiler is bad. The Ford Escort Cosworth as designed by Frank Stephenson was intended to have two spoilers (the finance department killed the idea before it hit the rally track), one that went straight back from the roof and another below it. This design did generate more downforce than either of the spoilers on their own. However, these looked pretty different to what most people are sticking onto their cars.

louvers make sense on a car that has a recessed rear window, like the DeLorean, 68-70 Charger, DeTomaso Pantera, etc. Because the louvers actually try to keep the airflow attached to the body rather than have it seperate because of the window. Of course, the best solution is to have a flush rear window in the first place (like what Dodge did with the Charger Daytona) but louvers can help with that without the need of changing the entire glass design.

Just to clear up louvers. They are not designed for down force, they are not designed for looks. And they are not pointless. Louvers are actually designed for cooling. Lambos or any mid/rear engine mounted car, are really the only vehicles who benefit from it. They are designed to suck air out of the engine bay (if it is a rear mounted engine). The more air you can take out of the engine bay, allows you to bring more air into the engine, equaling more airflow i.e. better cooling. Imagine a bucket. If it has a hole in the bottom and you fill it up with water, you cannot pump more water into it and then expect for water to flow out the bottom faster. If you increase the hole sized, water will flow faster, and you can pump more water in. Imagine if you could attach a pump to the bottom of the bucket and pump water out of it, as fast as possible. You would then HAVE to supply more water to the bucket and more water then the pump can pump out. Mean faster flow and more water. Louvers are the pump in this analogy. I agree with everything in this video. Unless you have a rear mounted engine, then you cannot use louvers other then for looks. Or if you have a back windshield glass, under the louvers, then louvers are nothing but for looks. Louvers only purpose in a front engine RACE car, is to pump air out of the cabin, meaning cooler cabin temps. So the driver will stay cooler and be saved from the heat of the car. Airplanes also have louvers and cooling vents on the cowlings for the exact same reason. Louvers are cooling vents. Nothing more.

Spoilers on fwd cars.. vw Corrado, that small active wing reduced rear end lift by 70% at 90kph iirc. Losing grip on the rear wheels of a fwd car is arguably worse than on a rwd car, since you cant really drift eiter. You just slide. Same with a front wing on a rwd car.. for the vw beetle (30-is hp?) you could get a front wing from Kamei. Wich produced 50kg downforce at 100kph. Most beetles drove around with 2 cinderblocks in the front to improve handling. Or they mounted such a spoiler.

Basically, you *generally* don’t need a wing for grip when you’re going straight, you need it for lateral grip when you’re turning. Yes, you keep some power on when you’re in a corner to keep the speed up as well as preventing too much lift off oversteer, but a car needs both front downforce and rear downforce, no matter if it’s FWD, RWD, AWD, front engine or rear engine. I believe that FWD cars actually need rear downforce more than RWD cars as the rear ends of FWD cars are very light under braking and in corners. If a FWD car had a lot of front downforce and no rear downforce it would be over steering a ton around every corner. If a RWD car had a lot of rear downforce and no front downforce it would under steer around every corner. The F/R downforce balance would be different for different drivetrains though. For all types of cars you generally need fairly balanced downforce balance with a little more on the front, and the most amount of downforce possible for that track (ie. enough to be fast enough through the corners that the lack of straight acceleration doesn’t matter and you end up with a lower lap time for that track).
