I wouldn't use a hot water bottle where a complete failure would be life threatening, but I'll stick with it on my weekend warrior excursions. I always check for leaks once filled and also put it inside a waterproof bag, usually a waterproof stuff sack turned inside out (so that if it does leak, the part that holds stuff remains dry).

Hot water in a nalgene. Been doing it for years. Never leaked.

If you're using a hot nalgene in your sleeping-bag, put it in a secure drybag. It helps to heat up the sleeping bag, and you have non-frozen water in the morning! Great to have enough water for breakfast and coffee whilst melting more snow for the coming day (lunch/coffe break).

Great tips, as always. Volume on this one was low. Sound was clear, but just not very strong coming through. Don't know why.

Hi Justin. Your winter reviews and recommendations are among the few I trust because you are actually testing in real world conditions and have experience of extreme cold / winter camping. Keep up the great work and thanks for the valuable information 👏👍

I also like the water bottle in the boot trick. Keeps my boots warm and the boots insulate the water bottle a bit. Makes it a bit more pleasant for night time excursions .

I think the water bottle is a bit more complicated. Absolutely, it's not a "omg I need to get warm!!" You are better using your insulation. For years however I have used nalgenes, in a rag wool sock, without any failures for 2 reasons. Note my lowest temps have been 0° F. I simply can't justify the $$$ for gear that will get me much below that because I only do 2-3 winter trips a year. 1. It does add a little extra warmth as soon as you get into you sleep system instead of having to wait that brief period of time for your body heat to do the job. 2. I wake up with at least 1 liter of basically body temperature water which means it's better to drink and quicker to boil for breakfast. The trick to stop the chance of a slight leak is to not seal the bottle until it's dropped a bit under boiling temp. The combination of temperature, and pressure of the water vapor present due to high temps, can cause the leak. Reduce the temp so the pressure issue is minimized and it's good.to.go

I'm pretty sure that inflation bags end up using a turbulent mixture of air from your lungs and ambient air. Otherwise, there would be no work advantage in using the bag. So it's not just that the air cools off before entering the pad. It starts off cooler.
@andymytys
@andymytys Жыл бұрын
It doesn’t have to be a mix. I use my Nylofume pack liner as an inflation bag. I open the end and fluff it in the air to fill it, then close the end in my fist. I insert the opening to my sleeping pad into my fist, with my fingers forming a tunnel from the inside of the bag to the inflation valve. Then I press the bag and push the air into the mattress. No breathing of air from my mouth needed.

@JustinOutdoors I'm going to the Philippines in a couple weeks, gonna hit 🎯 a flagship Experience Decathlon store in Alabang since the Vancouver Metrotown store isn't open yet, only the pop-up. I'm looking at the trekking poles quiver from their Evadict line, (they're fixed length, but collapsible) maybe i can rig or MacGyver it to suit my purposes. Chances are like Costco, won't be leaving the store empty handed. Walk-in with one thing in mind, walkout with P$1000's worth lolz😂

He had a bad initial one. They sent him another which he says tested a lot better. But after getting that second one he has still recommended the thermarest. He likely doesn't want to trash any gear or companies, but I think it's fallen short of his expectations. That's what it appears to me, anyway.

That's not how it works - at least from my winter camping experience. What happens is that you wake up and feel cold. Then you add layers or whatever and get some more sleep. If you don't have anything to add then you'll have to start moving or use your stove to heat up the tent for a while. If you ignore the signs then something worse might happen, but I've camped many nights with a bag that's not warm enough and the worst that's happened is poor sleep. That doesn't mean that I disagree with what Justin say. You'll of course be more comfortable with a good (enough) sleep system.

Really like the winter camping gear but the prices were crazy 😅. $790 bucks for a sleeping bag!!!! 200 for a sleeping pad. I could understand this if I was going to the antarctic on an expedition.

"While the inflation bag still uses air from your lungs" Huh? I think someone didn't read the instructions... You're meant to open the bag wide, and "scoop" it through the air to fill it, not blow inside it...

Justin, I enjoy your videos but you have a consistent sound volume issue with them and maybe this one is a little worse. When I have my audio adjusted to where the ads aren't blowing out my ears, you are nearly inaudible.

The problem isn't his audio, but the commercials. It's just as easy to hit mute, and it's not Justin's fault, KZbin puts the ads in as it sees fit, unless u subscribe to the paid version?

I dont think that skeeping bag would work for me. I CANNOT sleep on my back. It looks like if I roll over to my side to sleep I'd just be breathing into the side of the sleeping bag. And suffocate 😵 I also don't like things over my face. Which is tricky when winter camping for sure 😂
@victorkonstantin
@victorkonstantin Жыл бұрын
You can solve this problem by sleeping in a parka jacket and keep the sleeping bag zipped only up to your chest. I sleep like that alot in the winter without any problems. It's also easier to get out of the bag if you have to pee, etc.

I agree, the hot water bottle is a big no no, also because it is not working! To make sure my feet stay warm I use plastic bags, that’s the only thing that works for my “always cold feet”.
