And the Grammy award for best rock album goes to… THE GUY ON KZbin TELLING PEOPLE TO SHAVE

@@joeymusic Let me be the *_enlightened centrist_* and say that he should shave those outer scraggly parts around the edge of his chin hair, to at least shape it up a bit. The camera angle also doesn't help. It's funny tho cuz Miami your HEAD hair is on point! As are the insights, which is why I'm here anyway

I've never programmed guitars, but I recently got into programming bass. My drummer said, it sounded like it was recorded, not programmed. It's crazy how far the technology has come.

I love the last point. So often in the mix-advice world it's "take breaks, Take Breaks, TAKE BREAKS!!!" but there is also something to be said about sticking with your flow. I usually play it by ear and by gut, intuitively, and when I get a big sense of "00FDA, I've been at it here now for a bit" I step out for a drink of water and maybe start thinking about lunch. Check the messages. Get back at it in 5-7 min.

Mastering engineers have been putting reverbs on entire mixes for years. I really don't feel like that technique should be that controversial. It's a great way to make all the instruments feel like they're in the same space. My main caveats are that you shouldn't use a long or aggressive reverb and you should make sure to only mix a small amount in. You should barely be able to tell it's there. But if you mute it, suddenly the glue vanishes.

@christopherharv2 жыл бұрын
Not long or aggressive, but just how SM0L are we talking? I do this with my bass and drums, to glue them, but never have tried it with a whole mix. Usually I'll do whole-mix saturation for a little glue, with a particular focus on the high-end for 'excitement'

The reverb trick is also pretty good when you want to create a wider stereo feel if you use a room emulation, time it to the song's bpm (60,000/BPM), chop the low frequencies with a linear phase EQ (up to 100-200hz) and compress the sides a little bit. Love your vids, keep up the awesome work!
@landrysaathoff24182 жыл бұрын
The reverb trick is incredible if you are using a lot of VST instruments that sound cold and isolated from eachother. Running a “Room” reverb parallel to the master bus can make things gel.

Justin Colletti once said that many beginning mixers think that you should try to use as little compression as possible, but most pro mixers have the mentality that they are trying to use AS MUCH compression as possible while keeping it dynamic. Then Colt Capperune mentioned that he like never ever uses less than 7db of reduction on a vocal, and often he just pins the needle. Started doing that on my mixes, and vocals CAME ALIVE. Started compressing bass the same way, and it sounds so much better. Honestly some elements just need to be crushed to get the most out of them. Compression is dope, I love it.

I've put reverb on whole mixes multiple times. It sounds great, can really help the instruments feel together, and can some really cool atmosphere to a track. Will give mixing vocals first a go on the next mix. Makes sense for a vocal centered track to be bulk l built around the singing.

i use reverb on my entire mix and even stack reverbs because i go for a "ghostly" effect there is a right way to do it though, don't oversaturated and the more reverbs you have stacked, the more you should lower the mix and decay
@whome8062 жыл бұрын
If you don't like the reverb sound you should try out using the guitar rig 6 cabinet match pro on a return track the room sound from using those sounds way more natural than using vintage verb imo

@@joeymusic I'm getting about -5db to -6db in reduction. I used to throw on the 76 because I remember you saying that sounds awesome on rock vocals. I use midi guitars all the time, same as bass and drums. It makes writing so much smoother IMO. You can change anything back and forth without having to record anything. I still use a real guitar to double check the part so it makes sense on an actual guitar tho.

That’s really stupid why not use the guitar that why it sounds lifeless you really can’t replace a guitarist or bassist with midi you loose the feel if you do that.
