I’ve been going to car meets with my grandpa since I was probably about 5. The only rule I knew was NEVER TOUCH THE CARS. I have a story regarding the "you ruined it" thing. Not so long ago, I had a 1991 Civic. Completely. Bone. Stock. People came up to me multiple times a week to explain how they'd slam it, get some rims, drop in a K24 with a turbo the size of... "Nyet. Car is fine.". The only thing I eventually did was get some black 14" wheels, because 13 is a bit goofy even for me, and 14" tires are actually cheaper and MUCH easier to find these days. After about a year, the car got stolen. I live in Portland, so the big fear was that it had been dragged into one of the homeless camps where they disassemble and part out cars assembly line style with no consequences. After a month and a half, I was informed that my car had been found. When I went to pick it up, half of the interior plastics had been wrapped in zebra stripe. The bumpers and lower sides of the doors had been crudely sprayed in black primer which was already peeling. They even made a point to spray the fuel filler door. The stock shifter was replaced with a plastic skull. The steering wheel had a trucker knob glued to it. The roof and hood had been doused in paint remover, but the emeritus professors doing the job ran out and just left it looking the Emperor Palpatine's nutsack. My rims were gone and replaced by some 15s with a weird offset. Ironically, it also appeared that the car had been re-stolen from the original thieves. It was piled to the roof with clothes and junk, alarmingly including a can of gas and some cigarette butts. Someone was clearly living in the car when it was found. It seems unlikely that the homeless guy sleeping in it was also actively buying mods. I do try not to be too judgemental about other peoples' cars. But I think you'll agree that in this case, I have a license to say "you ruined it". I don't mind the homeless guy so much - I could reverse all that in 10 minutes. It was everything else that made me look up the price of plutonium.

@@LibertyDrives Fortunately I had another car. Unfortunately it's a Dakota R/T and the gas is a bit painful with the Biden-Putin price program. I drive for a limo company and the Dakota literally gets worse mileage than our 14pax Yukon Denali stretch. Madness. Once Oregon stops raining on us so much, we can hopefully get the motor back into my project 2000 Honda Insight. 75mpg sounds real good right now. It's ridiculously slow, but that doesn't bother me. It's effectively an all-aluminum CRX - it's still fun. Btw, a straight-piped Insight is quieter than most cars with a full factory exhaust. It's freaky.
@sadturtlesoup88322 жыл бұрын
You know I respect that tho. I've seen some CLEAN stock cars. Had a buddy that went on a bender making his Del Sol as clean as possible. Redid everything to factory spec, just got slightly bigger wheels for the same reason you did. Cheaper tires. Another buddy of mine is working on restoring an early MR2 to factory spec. Not my thing but, I can appreciate a clean stock spec car. Takes dedication to detail a car that well.

I went to my first meet 2 weeks ago to meet up with a friend. I just wanted to go look at cars and I didn’t have anything to show. I showed up with my 01 7.3l power stroke. Straight piped. No muffler. 6 inch exhaust. She’s one loud baddie. I pulled in to go park in the back away from everyone so the real cars could have a good spot. And ppl were giving me like a strange look and someone yelled “get that tractor out of here!” And I got really embarrassed cuz it’s a work truck surrounded by really nice cars.I have my 5th wheel in my bed and everything. Mind you my truck is in extremly good condition inside and out. (I’m the 2nd owner. Extremly lucky). I’m just hanging out with my friend and some bros came up to me and told me they liked my truck and said I should of had it near the other cars and they wanted to hear my motor idle and hear some revs Even tho my girl is a 100% stock. With a semi dirty engine bay lol. Since she’s literally my work truck since I tow a lot. I’m just glad that I felt welcomed a little bit even tho I was just a looker and not a showER. He was very apologetic when I confronted him, but it was too late - I didn't want to interact with him at that point. Years after than I was showing an FFR Cobra with functional side exhaust. I hadn't been out of the car for 5 minutes when I look over and see a kid, about 5 years old standing on the very hot side exhaust, one hand on the door, looking inside. If that Tesla in #2 only had the list of stats (both regular performance numbers and the price with the gas/charging comparison).... That would have been fine. Even a politely worded 'please do not touch' sign is fine. Since like pointed out in the video, there are plenty of kids and people who maybe just need a reminder since shows/meets are not something they typically do. (it is really easy to forget that you are not allowed to touch things, especially things you would otherwise not think twice about, like the quarterpanel of a car when you are looking in the engine bay) It is the jerkass remark on the 'do not touch' sign as well as the 'look at how big my _package_ is' sign that causes it to shift to signaling that the owner is as useful as the scum that forms on the inside of your windshield when you smoke. fun side note: When Adam Savage was at the National Air & Space Museum at The Smithsonian (I think it was there) and they were showing him one of the suits worn by NASA astronauts while inside the Apollo spacecraft. It was literally on a table a foot or less from him. And while the guy from the museum and Savage were talking about it, you could see he had to stop himself on several occasions from reaching out to grab the suit. Honestly I can't blame him, but it would have only taken one little lapse of concentration and he would have contaminated the suit with dirt and oils from his skin at the very least, easily could have caused damage to other parts of it... and I don't care how rare whatever car someone at a meet/rally/show/whatever has or how much work they did or who did it..... it never went to the moon, full stop.

What are good questions to ask at meets? Like to keep a conversation going about a car you don't know much about?
@LibertyDrives3 жыл бұрын
Awesome question, with any conversation you don't want to have a script cause you want to be genuine. Just remember, everyone's human and havin non-planned but relaxed conversations is always best. A few things I can think of that wouldn't seem too cliche are: what'd you do to the car? Was the (blank) mod worth it? How long have you had it? Do you know of any other good meet spots? How much power do these make stock? How quick are they stock? What else do you plan on doing to it? Just stuff like that. When in doubt ask about the cars past (what the owners done before), present (what it's like to drive and own now), and future (what they want to do to it). Hope that helped and wasn't too long, I wanted to give you a lot of examples😂😂
@hardblinker62752 жыл бұрын
Sometimes asking about the history of the car (whether general history or the owner’s personal history with the vehicle) is great. Even sometimes mentioning that you’re a new person to car meets opens up conversation for people cause could be like, “oh! Sweet, someone to add to our group.” Etc.

when I received my first project truck and I was trying to find what is wrong with it someone told me to reuse the crappy spare v8 I had sitting and wanna know the funny part that engine had lots of corrosion and it had a big crack on it so I decided to replace it with a 223 i6 just like the one it came with. I love the low hum of my 6.1 it's not too loud either unless I get on it. But anyway. I sell cars and the majority of people are weird especially when buying them 🤣🤣🤣 God forbid our sprinklers hit the car before they came in to look or it rains and there's some dirt on it. (even though we completely detail and gas it before they leave after they decide to buy)

😂😂 Buying and selling can be so rough, especially when people have no clue what they're doin. When I was selling my first car, a couple came to look at it and told me it was for the wife's mother. They said they just needed a cheap commuter... then they complained about the smaller than 1 sq ft clear coat fade and said they couldn't pay as much because of that (they offered about 1/2 or 2/3 what I was askin)😂 They also never even asked to start the car

I’m part of the ‘you ruined the car’ group but mostly when it comes to safety stuff. A girl went viral where I’m from for having a DIY Tesla S Plaid style steering yoke on her 1.3L VW Golf-knockoff (in better words, she cut her steering wheel on her goddamn Myvi) which not only looks atrocious but in the event of an emergency, she has less steering wheel to have her hands on. I’m also part of the ‘its too loud’ gang BUT only if they do it in a place with lots of kids and babies. I love loud cars, but I hate it if it makes babies scream.
The off chance that someone says my exhaust is too loud; " if you don't like it, you can always pay for a quieter exhaust with your money". ;)

Something people need to understand is there shouldn't be "rules" on what to do, or what not to do. If you want to make it loud, make it loud, if you don't want it to be loud, don't make it loud, if you want to wrap it, wrap it, if you want to paint it, paint it. Another very annoying example would be Jeep wrangler angry eye grills. Those are hated by a large percentage of the jeep community, just because it's less "authentic" or "jeepy". They payed for it, it's *theirs*, let them do what they want to do with it.

I'd add a caveat to the "you ruined it" thing. I think it's totally justified to say if it's made the car unsafe- as in, could do harm to others because the owner did certain mods. I'm talking about stanced cars or Carolina lifted trucks, or light bars/headlights that blind other drivers, etc. Things like this don't just affect the vehicle, but other drivers on the road, putting them at risk. I love that we can mod our vehicles, even if others find it stupid or shitty, but if it affects mine and others safety, then it's gotta go.

I kinda disagree with the whole "too loud" thing. I don't think you shouldn't be allowed to have a loud car, but I do think that if you have a loud car, you have to be aware that not everyone will appreciate the noise. e.g. don't start the car up when there's people (especially young kids) directly behind. I have ASD so maybe I'm more sensitive to this, but sudden loud noise is incredibly stressful to me.

This isn't really something that I find annoying, it's just an interesting story. A few years ago my dad was involved in a car accident that left the then-family car completely totalled. Luckily my dad was completely unscathed. We both thought about what car he should get. We went to a very large car sale even where lots of dealers park their cars in a stadium parking lot and have a giant sale. The timing of that event was definitely quite convenient. My dad seemed to still be stuck in his old mentality of "I need to find something practical". I told him that since he's divorced and my brother and I live elsewhere now, he's finally free. He no longer needs a practical car. That day, I saved my dad from buying a boring SUV. He left the event with a WRX which was pretty funny for me because before that he had never even heard of it. But he was happy to have found a car with a manual transmission he enjoys driving, so I was happy too.

For one if I have other stuff planned for the day and I’m not fully engaged at the meet I’m going to clean my car because I won’t have time to later, and sometimes When parking next to a super clean car and mine is looking a little dusty it irritates me so I start wiping it down. You should do a video on (not sure if you did it already) on the whole horsepower debate. Here’s what I mean. I’ve been looking at getting a 370Z/G37 for the longest time. Since I’m much more familiar with those cars and they look nice to me. That’s what I always wanted. But my buddies be like: “wHy DoN’t YoU gEt A CoRvEtTe? It’S cHeApEr AnD hAs MoRe PoWeR.”. Like why? I don’t care much for power, I’m more of a handling and driving dynamic kind of person so I don’t care too much for them. Not that I wouldn’t mind owning a Vette. This seems to be an ongoing problem in the community where people get shitted on for owning low horsepower cars. Horsepower isn’t everything and if that were the case. We would all be giving Dodge our money. Even when I got my little Jetta, I get made fun of because of the low power numbers the 2.0 in it makes. The thing is not going on the track, it’s not drag racing anything. It’s just an A to B car and I wish some of these folks can understand not every car has to have 1,000 HP to be fun.
@LibertyDrives2 жыл бұрын
I think it's all about what you want in the car man. If you want a 370/g37 then hell yeah buy that. If your friends think you need a Corvette then let them buy you one😂 I definitely don't think it's all about horsepower, my friend and I have talked about how we wouldn't want something that'll spin it's tires in perfect weather at 70-80 on the highway lol. Some people actually prefer certain lower horsepower (like stock miatas) cars cause you get to really lay into it and enjoy it without immediately being over the speed limit, that's also why I like enhancing the sound (without being obnoxious or giving myself a headache). Cause it makes the car sound better at times other than when it's at 5k rpm. It's just all about what you want, best of luck getting your future ride man! Do what'll make you happy, be safe out there and enjoy it!
