Really hate how the Vikings show portrayed him. They have him being some silly weirdo dude. But there's no historical evidence whatsoever claiming 7he was a silly weirdo. In fact, all evidence shows he was a master boat-builder and sea navigator. He settled Iceland. The show insults his real legacy.

One Viking you should have added to this is Raud Den Rame (Rauðr Inn Rammi), he was a fearsome Viking chieftain who lived in a place in Norway called Saltstraumen (Saltstream), which is known today as tourist attraction because it is one of the worlds strongest maelstroms hotspots. During the Viking Age, Raud was believed to not only be a fearsome warrior, but also a powerful shaman. Since ships and men who came in to attack him usually ended up getting crushed and drowned by the powerful maelstrom in Saltstraumen, which at the time was believed to have been summoned by Raud himself. When the Viking King, Olav Tryggvason (now Christian) wanted to convert Raud, he refused. When failing to convert him to Christianity, he decided to kill him instead. He died by having a snake forced down his throat, and the snake would go berserk and eat him up from the inside.. This was a symbolic death by the hands of King Tryggvason, because Raud had a very nice longboat with a dragon head in the front, and a curled tail in the back, fittingly named Ormen. (The Worm/The Snake). After King Tryggvason killed Raud, he took the ship because it was much nicer than his own ship, this ship also was used later by King Tryggvason as a model for his new ship, Ormen Lange. (The long Worm/The long Snake). Raud den Rame was one of the most fearsome chieftains among the Hålogaland Vikings, which were very feared and brutal Vikings living in a specific area of northern Norway. (Basicly the die hard berserker vikings pictured in media today.)

Death comes without lamenting… Eager am I to depart. The Dísir summon me home, those whom Odin sends for me Valkyries from the halls of the Lord of Hosts. For those wanting to see something about Ragnars sons revenge on England watch the show The Last Kingdom. It should still be on Netflix. It follows the great pagan army as it ravages England and the last English kingdom left, Wessex led by Alfred the great trying to stop them. Alfred would go on to unite the kingdoms and form England The main character is an Anglo son of an alderman whose father is killed in battle and he's taken in and raised as a Viking. His adopted Viking father is killed by another Viking in order to steal his adopted sister to make her his bride and he tries to go home but learns his uncle wants to kill him and be alderman himself. He flees south to Wessex and eventually swears fealty to Alfred so he can work his way up to get revenge on the people who killed his adopted father and eventually retake his birthright It's pretty unbiased with good and bad guys on either side. Not glorified. Alfred isn't made out to be some super human figure of strength and righteousness It also goes over the whole Christian vs pagan stuff pretty well Even though the main character is by birth an Anglo and was baptized his identity is that of his adopted family of the Norse and pagans. Lots of side switching and fighting adopted brother against adopted brother

Why isn't King Canute the great no mentioned in this? I'm quite surprised that he's not on this list. It was actually Canute's Father, King Sweyn Forkbeard lead a battle on English and he defeated them. He was the first King of England hut he passed soon afterwards. It was his son Canute, that succeeded the throne. He is 1 of the most interesting and famous vikings ever to live.

@@TheBarser Unlike others on the internet, I had a professional genealogist do a check on my family line. She and her partner went through my tree for months. Trust me, I was surprised. His son, that's where the line stops in the records. (And the son of his I am related to.) There are no records of his birth, just possibly his death. So the connection is that of his son (or known son) and him. That records from that era have even made it this far into the future is astounding. He's not even my most famous direct relative, just the one I am most interested in. But again, thank you for your input. Find peace, my friend!

Brestir (a viking chieftain in the Faroe Islands) got a spear thrusted into his belly by another chieftain called Havgrím. Before dying, he grabbed the spear and pulled it further in, in order to get Havgrím, who was still holding the spear, closer to him. He then hammered his sword down on Havgrím's shoulder with such force that he nearly cleaved his arm off.

God no. Real(ish) people, but events separated by hundreds of years, all crammed in and associated to Ragnar and his sons The initial raid at Lindisfarne (attributed to Ragnar in the show), was in 793. The Great Heathen Army, invaded in 865. Harald Finehair died in 932. Erik the Red died 1002, about the time that his son, Lief Erikson, (not Ubba), was discovering North America. He died in 1020 But The Sagas that the tales of Ragnar Lödrock come from, are just as exaggerated, it's still a good show

Clarke most "evidence" has Ivar dying in Ireland, around 873... I say "evidence" as any contemporary sources are by English and Irish chronicallers, as the Vikings never wrote anything down, so they may have wanted to say that he died for propaganda purposes, but he doesn't appear after that in any documents

Wait, wait, wait... The Battle of Stiklestad (Harold Hardrada's first battle) wasn't a battle to reclaim the throne of Norway. It was, in a sad reality, an attempt to forcibly convert the population of Norway to Christianity in an attempt to gain favor with other Christian kingdoms throughout Europe. King Olaf II of Norway led an army to quell an uprising of peasants (which consisted of not just pagans, but Christians too, led by three chieftains, one of which was Thorir Hund, my ancestor). This resulted in the defeat of King Olaf II's forces and his own death. Of course, like so many other things in human history, the pendulum swung hard in the other direction and in King Olaf's death brought upon even more death to the people of Norway with his successor being even more ruthless than Olaf. And after the successor of King Olaf passed away, the throne was put upon Harold Hardrada, which he continued his predecessor's policy with subjecting the pagans (and their Christian allies) with harsh punishments and authoritarian rule.
@TheSamuraijim87
@TheSamuraijim87 6 жыл бұрын
That is definitely not true. It may be you are confused about Olaf II with Olaf Tryggvason, who did violently enforce Christianity. Olaf II was exiled by the seizure of the throne of Norway by Canute the Great, another Christian King. Canute, though a Christian, was supported by the Jarls of Lade who were inclined to pagan worship and had obtained a position equal to regents of Norway by inviting the Christian Danes under Sweyn Forkbeard, Canute's father, to overthrow Olaf Trygvasson in coalition with Lade and Pagans from Sweden, at the Battle at Svolder. Norway was subsequently carved up and the Jarls of Lade, though Pagan, became strongmen for the Christian Danes. Olaf II was definitely involved in Christianizing Norway, but if he favored Christian clans more than those who were pagan, that is surely attributable to the fact that he was violently overthrown by the pagans of Lade, who were, at any rate, acting as enforcers of the Christian Canute, so the story is much, much more complex than Olaf II was fighting to enforce Christianity.
