Very surprising that the 240/300 inline six motors didn’t make this list. They would have been number one for me. Ford put them in everything. Trucks, tractors, ups trucks, generators, steam rollers, etc. The engine that built modern America as some say.

My Dad bought a brand new 1957 Ford station wagon, green and white. He had it about 2 weeks and 2 ford factory representatives came to our house and told my Dad they wanted to buy the motor out of his wagon. He told them he didn't want to sell it and told them to take a hike. They offered him a new car of his choice but the answer was still nope. They told him the motor was not supposed to be in the car. It was a new design they were working on and it somehow mistakenly got put in the wagon. My Dad knew it was some kind of racing motor because it had 2 four barrel carbs and an aluminum intake. They told him it was the new 427 they were developing and were coming out with it in a few years. They tried everything to get that motor but it was still in the wagon when my Dad traded it in on a new car in 68. I had both a 1978 F150 with the 302 and a 1979 with the 351 and both could haul a trailer behind it the 302 was hard pressed to do 70 hauling a load but the 351 could handle the same load easily. The 460 version was the best load hauler but the gas mileage was terrible. I remember borrowing a friends 1975 3/4 ton camper special and it got between 5-7 MPG. You could literally watch the needle on the gas gage go down. Luckily I think most came with dual tanks or you would get very far on trip between fill ups.

I work on police trucks/ suvs running the 3.5 twin turbo Ecoboost . Running the factory fill 0-30 has turned out to be the leading cause of engine failures. Early on 1 truck was ran using a full synthetic 0-40 oil, this unit has had O engine issues yet has the highest miles and second highest engine hours. Engine hours always exceeds miles due to the officers never shutting off the engine during their shift, each officer has an assigned vehicle . 10+ years ago while working for Shelby American I had a conversation with a Ford engineer about oil weights, why was Ford using light weight oils and would a heavier oil be better. His reply was , lighter oils showed less fuel consumption during EPA test cycles, plus you couldn’t use heavier oils due tighter clearance in the engine. Questioning his statement I pointed out that the 5.4 in the P.U. Called for a 0-30 yet in the Shelby Mustang 0-50 to 20-50 was used. His BS reply, loser clearances. I later checked the clearances as spec’d by Ford, no difference, I later had a talk with an oil engineer who worked with Ford, he stated that it was just about CAFE standards and that long term use of light and ultra light oils cause increased wear, further, he didn’t use light oils in any of his vehicles., by using a certain full synthetic oil even though it was a higher weight oil he was still seeing mpg figures higher than the light/ ultra light oils. If you have a Ecoboost don’t idle it more then you have to. Don’t use ultra light oils and don’t drive it like it was grandma’s car.

@Jim Watson I think there was also a 332 version. A mechanic friend who worked on Fords told me the best engine Ford ever built was the 390. I think the 390 was the last old thick bore casting; being superseded by thin wall casting techniques. They were heavy, rugged, and lasted forever.
@markhull13664 жыл бұрын
@Jim Watson Yep! They put a those in pickup trucks. It didn't seem to have the service life of the 390 though. I think it was so over square and they ran it at higher RPM's than the 390. A lot of them got converted to 390 too.
