Clear with silver flake 4” twister tail on an 1/8 oz unpainted jighead is my killer river smallie bait. It produces for me when others don’t.

Must have baits for smallies on the river? there's two! 1) jig* 2) pig** *lighter weight for the river to avoid hangups and to drift in the current- many brands, i like Jimmy D's River Bugs (in black in all cases) ** uncle josh pork frog, black, number 11 on back of jig.
@markw999 Жыл бұрын
The ones you missed: Tube Jigs - If you've got rocky bottom and faster moving water you can lighten that jig head and stay out of the danger zone easier. Curly Tail Grubs - Simplest jig ever, works like crazy. Black Buzz Baits - Dunno why black is the color, but especially late in the day toward dusk it slays them if there's any kind of topwater bite at all.

Spot on! 4” clear twister with silver flakes kill ‘em on the river for me.

This comment is a year old and still accurate! Every night when I hit the river for some night fishing I have a cream color whopper plopped and an all black choppo 90 and the black choppo is the one that NEVER misses! Crazy that black works in the dark haha 😂
@markw9993 ай бұрын
@@jessicacole3548 black is actually a high-contrast color. If you and I were seeing further into the ultra-violet spectrum it would stand out like a sore thumb.

What are type of jig / hook are you using with a grub ? Curious about your tube jig setup as well as this is something I have never thrown.
@markw9993 ай бұрын
@@Jnf458 Football head style or just round. 1/4 oz max and I just stick to black or brown. Those colors seem to work with everything. Strike King makes some good ones. Keep your rod tip high and the jig moving. Once you're down in the boulders you're screwed. The rivers I fish run fairly fast, not a lot of weeds and muck so not much need for weedless setups. I've also experimented with underspins with mixed success. Tube jigs - I just use the standard football-ish shaped tube jig everyone sells everywhere. I've also added a little corkie (used for steelhead and salmon fishing) on the shaft of the hook to give it some buoyancy. Same thing, lighter is better so you're not down in the boulders. Smallies can get you down in the rocks and pop your line against a sharp edge in nothing flat. Good luck, river smallies are fun. I mostly fish a river that I can cover the width of with one cast. Med light spinning gear, 12-16 lb braided WITH LEADER - 8-10 pd Pline Copolymer works great. Keep an eye on your line, rivers will beat up that line pretty bad depending on where/how you're fishing. Be ready to tie lots of knots and bring your spool of leader material.

Great video man some of those I throw and some not so much. Definitely gonna try to experiment with some different lures this year. I been thinking of doing a video like this too. Always interested in what others throw on the river. I river fish more than anything else and have found what works for me in the Nolichucky doesn't work as well in other river's. Anyway thanks for sharing man.
