just wanted to say thanks...I have a set of 1-2-3 blocks in my tool chest but it never occurred to me to use them for wood working. An hour into the first time doing so I was kicking myself for never thinking about it. One of those rare things that both saved time and increased precision simultaneously. Thanks again

I bought the 1-2-3 setup blocks, just after watching the video. The ones I got were were rough and nasty. Had to soak them in mineral spirits to get them cleaned up. After that I sanded the rough edge down with some 600-grit sand paper, then took them over to my bench polisher. I coated them with some wax to prevent rush. They feel good now and I don’t worry about scratching any wood with them. I keep an old dull ¼” & ½” drill bit off to the side when using these. With the blocks and bits you can set most common setups.

Excellent review Stumpy. I too began using Ridge Carbide blades after meeting John at Woodworkers show a few years back. I remain impressed. I have a spare blade (just in case, and still new in the box). After chewing through at least 5,000 LF of recycled oak it is going strong. I also purchased one for my compound mitre saw and achieved excellent results on crosscuts. No tear outs. Both are the best blades I have ever used, bar none.

Nice video stumpy. I do hobby metal working as well as wood working and I to use 1-2-3 blocks for set ups. One correction however, Bosch is not the only palm router with a tilting base. Makita also offers one. Their big kit comes with all the do-dads and is the best deal going for a complete setup. Best regards, Mainiac

Nice roundup, Stumpy. For your European viewers, an alternative to the Bosch Colt is the Makita RT0700CX2J (Europe)/CX3J (US Amazon). The set includes a regular base, plunge base, and the tilting base. The CX2 version has a Makita-style L-Box and only one dust port, the CX3 apparently comes in a bag but has two dust ports, one side facing and one upward. That side facing port would have been nice to get too. The included edge guide is pretty basic so I bought Makita's premium guide which looks pretty similar to Bosch's, including micro adjust screw. This is one of the few palm routers you can get e.g. in Germany, full size plunge routers dominate here. I'm very happy with it and use it more than my plunge router.

Stumpy: I have a problem with LED "bulbs". You want reflection? Try this experiment on a dark night. Find a "curve caution sign" -yellow diamond shape with a black curved arrow. Stand back a couple of hundred feet, maybe 400. Two flashlights with equal batteries and design - say MagLites: one with LED light, one Incandescent bulb. You will be amazed at the lack of reflection/brightness of the LED. Color rendition means more than seems obvious, too. LED's - at least in the cheap versions - are "single spectrum" lights, of whatever color. Even in close-up, i find LED lacking. Maybe it is me with older eyes with close-ups, but it doesn't illuminate that steel edge right or maybe enough. We had a yellow lab. Same problem see her. Human eyes are designed for the full spectrum of the sun. Your "tool" videos are GREAT.

Truth is, you do "serious" as good as anyone. Like Marc Spagnolo without the Sonora and Prozac. I'd watch you even if you sold out to report the weather, partly because I'll always remember your earlier vids. Of all the shows I started watching back when, I would have never guessed this would be one of my favorites, today. You are one of the few personalities I watch on KZbin who gets better with time (vs more annoying and egocentric with a larger budget). Kudos to you and your editors and everyone else involved with the show. Please, keep it up!

I grew up with a Grandfather who was a cabinet maker and finish trim Craftsman and a Dad who was a machinist. So for me I leaned towards metal and made Tooling. But I use a lot of metal working tools around the wood shop. An older tool maker came over to my place alot because being young and full of energy I had several projects going all the time. He loved watching me do wood working , and soon went out and found a going out of. business shop and bought all the equipment. He and I both thought it would be easy for him to dive into wood work especially after 40 - 50 years holding tolerances to 20 times finer than a human hair. It drove him nuts because he couldn't get even close to the accuracy that we can in a metal machine shop. One thing I do is keep a worn out milling machine in my shop to cut grooves in wood rather than fight with a router table. But on the other hand I have a very difficult time in rough carpentry coming from such precision work. It drives me crazy trying to get everything perfect that could possibly stand being out a little. But metal measuring tools are great around the wood shop.

I'm totally blind and am looking for a first router. I considering a trim/palm router or D-Handled router. Any thoughts on which would be safer? Want to make edge profiles, rabbits and dados. Fantastic roundup. Just purchased the 160mm ridge blade for my track saw.
@StumpyNubs
@StumpyNubs 7 жыл бұрын
I would buy a D-handle router. They have a power switch right in the hand-grip, making them safer for a blind person to quickly turn the router off without trying to locate the switch somewhere on the router's body. You can also unplug the wire on the D-handle to cut power while changing bits, which will be easier for you than locating the plug in the wall. And the easier things like that are, the more likely you are to unplug it, and therefore keep your fingers. Here's a link to a good quality D-handle router on Amazon: amzn.to/2qWSkE1

If you do it again, you should send the blade in to Ridge Carbide for sharpening and inspecting, just in case a tooth is damaged by the Sawstop brake. Those can be hard on even the best blades.

Stumpy Nubs I had a Ridge saw blade destroyed when the cartridge on my Saw Stop fired. My hand wasn’t near the blade, I touched it with a piece of metal on an angle jig. Wasn’t Saw Stops fault. I called Saw stop and told them what happened to order a new cartridge. They replaced my blade for free with one of their blades even though it wasn’t their fault. Supper nice company! The Ridge blade is the best I have ever had.

well Bosch colt is not the only one with tilt base Makita trim router comes with it too ... and as a wood worker I like Bosch but not the routers that made by Bosch... I tried most of these routers there but the Makita and I found out that the best routers as quality and easy control and the plunge m is porter cable and dewalt ... but when it comes to the Bosch compact router it's feels very nice in ur hand with the fixed base it's small and easy to handle and also has lots of power ....but the adjustments are a pain ... and I wouldn't recommend it for any one .... the best that I fount is either the dewalt compact or the porter cable 450pk .....

Like I said in the video, I would say that Forrest and Ridge Carbide are equal in results and quality. But not equal in price.

Great video. I already use or have considered everything you mentioned- sweet, sweet validation. I may have commented this on the comparison video (RIP braincells), but Amana, IMO, makes the best bang-for-your-buck saw blades out there. For a little more than the price of a Diablo you get 2-3x the cut quality and durability.

It says in the product description of the 1-2-3 w/ holes that they are just as presice as the micro gauge's 1-2-3 block (Squareness of all sides is within .0002 per inch.) They are they same, no?
@StumpyNubs
@StumpyNubs 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, they SHOULD be the same. I find the cheap ones can be a little off at times. But that's true about any cheap tool.

Another good tool or tools to have is a set of adjustable parallel bars! If you have critical precision settings to make on a router or fence on a saw these are Versatel and repeatable!

Stumpy - love your channel. I do think your criticism of the plunge lever on the Bosch to be a little trite. While my Porter Cable "kinda" wants to stay plunged with the lever pulled to the left, I surely wouldn't trust a cut until I lock it in place by pushing it to the right after plunging. I find the Colt also locks by pushing the lever to the right. No learning curve for me. My two cents...

My Porter Cable "kinda" wants to stay plunged when I pull it's lever to the left, but I sure wouldn't trust a cut until I lock the lever to the right as stated in the their instructions. I find the Bosch Colt to lock to the right in the same manner. Lover your channel, thanks!
