5 must-try winter activities for kids in Mammoth Lakes, California
Mammoth is hands down our favorite place to visit year-round, but especially in winter. Mammoth currently has the most snow in the country, so it’s a great time to plan a winter trip.
❄️Woolly’s Tube Park -- If you feel the need for speed, there’s nothing like bombing down the recently revamped and perfectly groomed lanes at Woolly’s. There’s a Magic Carpet lift that takes you up to the top. There’s also a snow play area with opportunities to sled ride and build a snowman. They even have a snack bar offering hot cocoa and adult beverages.
❄️Cross country skiing -- Get away from it all and immerse yourself in the winter wonderland on 19+ miles of freshly groomed trails. The Tamarack cross country ski center offers rental gear for the entire family, as well as lessons and guided tours. We love taking the kids on the Twin Lakes loop because it’s a beautiful, easy trail.
❄️Snowshoeing -- Mammoth offers seemingly endless opportunities for snowshoeing, but our favorite is the trek from the Main Lodge at Mammoth Mountain to Minaret Vista. It’s a beautiful stroll through mountain hemlock to one of the most stunning lookouts in the Sierra.
❄️Snowboarding and skiing -- As of January 2023, Mammoth Mountain has the most snow in the country and offers 3500 acres of skiable terrain, 1/4 of which is perfect for beginners. Marti had the opportunity to take a lesson and she had so much learning with her instructor Sam.
❄️Village Gondola ride -- Don’t let the fact that this ride is free fool you. Your kids are going to love it. The ride up from the Village of Mammoth up to Canyon Lodge is beautiful. We also highly recommend taking the Panorama Gondola from the main lodge up to the summit at over 11k feet. The 360 degree views up top are amazing!
