Nice man, I remember seeing an instructional of Reb Beach (guitar player for winger, go ahead hate me lol) and he was saying to use your middle for tapping to for your same reason. Now if you played in winger or are a human level player, makes all the sense in the world. But, if you play in say Braindrill, you'd need to borrow fingers and grow some tentacles for that level of tappage

Great point Rodney an instrument is an instrument. I own a recording studio with over 50 guitars and basses. I have this converstation all the time. I recently started producing Metal and I have folks come in with Fenders, Ibanez, Alembics, Schecter, Music Man etc to play Metal . It's all about the player and getting the right tone :) And great point about strings and setups! That's why I started keeping guitars and basses in my studio because a lot of times folks come in with axes that are not setup correctly or with old strings. Also tell you a little secert a lot of the times I will have bass player use the P-Bass :) It's just cuts through mix like butter and I have a lot of high end producer and engineer friends who all keep a P-Bass on hand at their studio, they prefer a P-Bass when possible. Also let me add this as and engineer, it's also about your EQ and Compression skills as well that help bring out the tone and character in an instrument . A good engineer knows how to a good tone. out of an instrument. Let me give you an example many times I may have an artist come in who has not changed their strings in years and refuses to change them because they love their tone, then it's my job as a skilled engineer to make that instrument sound it's best.

FUCK YES, Rod, 9:20, new Cirrus !!!! I KNEW you'd mention Steve Harris. When we just did our new CD, I was BARELY touching the strings for all the songs. I agree 100%. Every time I see a "signature model" I think to myself "Well on that persons last 12 albums since the 80's he didn't have 'signature' pickups - so the tone I love from all those albums was from something (bass, amp, pups etc.) that already existed way back then." For example; I've been listening to Robert Trujillo play since around 1990 with ST, Infectious Grooves, Metallica. I personally think his sound is great. But now I see there is a Robert Trujillo signature set of EMG Jazz pups - which from what I've been told, are just the JA set or the JAX set with different covers on them. Basically every sound I dig comes from gear that's 20-60 years old, not to say though that any of the new stuff isn't good. But all my hero's used what they had available way back when.

Some of my pedals are as low as 30 bucks and do the job just as well as as the over prices ones. Even my noise gate pedal what around 20 bucks…gets the job done just fine. I only have one pedal above 300 bucks, and I realized, with the right EQ, my amp and free plug in on my PC will give me the same sound as the pedal lmao I know the sound I like and it’s not hard to dial in once I know what I’m looking for. Idc about buying anymore gear. I have my amp and like 5 pedals. All works for me and I know how I like them. I even mark them and color coat the ticks with permanent markers. For this sound, put the knobs on red, for that sound, put em on the blue ticks, etc.

I play big ridiculous strings because I prefer the way they feel. My action is about a 16th of an inch off the frets on my fretted bass and on my fretless basses i keep it super low. I use kalium hybrid strings and the reason i like them is the windings on the strings themselves are larger than normal especially on the low b string (158 gauge) so they have less winding cycles on them and they taper at the bridge. it gives them a unique feel where they have a very solid amount of tension but you can still really bend the string so its tight but flexible in a good way. And they last a reaaaaaaaally long time without losing their characteristic sound. Ive had the same set on my esp 5 string bass and they are a little less bright than when i first got them but not by much and they are still quite bright.

@@RodneyMcG well it was more being broke and having other things to spend money on than strings at the time and they had the gauges i wanted so i just didnt change them. i reckon its been at least 3 years since i put those strings on and they still sound good. Kalium make great strings but they are pretty shady to work with tbh. Its hard to find strings that sound that good and also feel that satisfying to play on so i just make sure they actually send me my strings . I just keep them on until i dont like the sound anymore and make sure i slack them off and pop them against the frets to get most of the dirt off every once in a while and clean them with rubbing alcahol or aqua velva aftershave if im feeling fancy to degrime them. I just tried stuff and spent hours in my local music store until i found what i really wanted. I think best of all would be zero in on exactly what YOU sound like. Then pursue that passionately. I love many players tones, but they wouldn't all be right for me. Then, you can start learning EQ, and understanding what gets the elements of the tone you really want and start clearing the fog a bit. I would reccomend watching my video on getting Eddie Jacksons tone for some approaches to finding out what things make up a personal tone. Good luck.

As one of those guys that used custom giant gauged strings, mile high action, beat the shit out of my bass and developed tendonitis in my right wrist. I can say that what Mr. Rodney is preaching here is the absolute truth! Went from 115 - 55 to 105- 45 string size on a 4 string and lowered the action considerably. Suddenly I had that clank, my wrist wasn't hurting as bad and my playing stamina almost doubled. I realized I had been working against the bass for a long time and not with it. Finally settled on 100 - 40 string size and have bee working on lightening up my touch a bit. Rodney clearly knows his shit. Don´t get me wrong the Corvette $$ is a beast, but P bass for life man. Personally recommend Stainless Steel strings, and with fingers better a heavy gauge. That zing and bright sound is more agressive and better suited for distortion. My favourites are DR DDT 115-55, I tune in C# standard and the tension is perfect for me, not loose strings at all. Tone wise: I like the sound of a P hate the look of P bass pickups. They are not symmetrical and that makes the OCD go bonkers. Lol I know stupid I have a cheap P rip off bass so it does not keep me from playing it. It’s a visual thing I do want to mess with a bass with two Ps. I know it been done before but it’s not common (from what I can tell) I may some day make that cheap P an experiment bass. Who knows pickup placement and stuff is where I get kind of werid. It is to me a good place to waste money and not know anything I can’t EQ worth shit. I agree there is nothing new under the sun. This applies to a lot of stuff not just music. Lol

I've been down sizing and using my cash on my ink lol but I'm forcing myself to use like 3 pieces of gear and try to learn how to use it well. No magic box or bass your right again use your ears and learn to EQ find your sound and practice your ass off

Got tired of being a bass gear marketing victim. Took a pro's advice and began to practice electric bass acoustically, with a metronome. Your head, ears and hands will come together and your personal sound will surface. Be patient.

I guess I assumed that everybody was just buying multi effects pedals nowadays. I love the zoom b3n, I can sound like Justin chancellor and switch to Tim Commerford with a click. My buddy bought the boss multi effects pedal that’s 250 bucks for guitar after he saw what my zoom pedal. He text me sound clips of him finding the acid bath sound and dime bag Darrell sound with his guitar so I’d say he is happy as well. It makes me wonder How many people just use these multi effects pedals That can emulate amps and cabinets as well.

I’m not trying to be a comment hog but after hearing Tom Morello and a few other notable guitarist say that they spent way too much time tone chasing. Tom Morello said he realize he was spending way too much time town chasing and not writing music and just playing. Tom said that one day he just said I am going to deal with the gear I have now put marks on his amp and just started playing music. If Tom Morello continue tone chasing we may never have had the same rage against the machine. I have heard the story on rig rundown so many times that they gave up tone chasing and that’s when the magic happened

Yup. It is also a psychological thing. People do it to procrastinate while thinking they are doing something that has purpose.
