Thank you Christine for your comments. I agree with you and will begin being consistent with the idea of multiplying by 1.

Hello Mr. Almeida, I am a Math Coach in FL. I actually like to discuss with students that you are multiplying the fraction by 1 (a whole). Students always say they are multiplying by a whole number instead of 3/3 or 5/5. To me saying it is 1 reinforces the Identity Property - what happens when we multiple by one, our product stays the same! The direct modeling helps show the equivalent fraction but I also see it as another way to reinforce what we are doing! Great job -you are very inspiring!

Mr. Almeida, I am student teaching this semester and I have just started teaching fractions. I am using the number line method but some of my students seem confused. I think this will help clarify some misunderstandings. Thank you.

Funny, that idea of having like denominators being like having the same units is how I articulate or explain adding fractions or combining like terms in a polynomial. I like this approach taken in the video. Does it resonate with the fifth graders?

Your explanation is very clear, but it seems like this method is much more complicated and time consuming than just multiplying denominators and then multiplying across. ( 3x5=15 2x5=10 1x3 =3 10/15 + 3/15 = 13/15)

You could've just multiplied the denominator
@MathwithMrAlmeida7 жыл бұрын
But do you know why we are doing that? How would a fifth grader be able to know this is true? This conceptual understanding will helps students to have better number sense to tell whether calculations are reasonable or not. This is different from the way that you may have learned, but it develops more of a conceptual understanding.
