My favorite is the first ever photograph of a tornado. I had nightmares about that tornado as a kid -- giant, dark and completely silent on the horizon...

The pictures from the 1800s and just the 1800s in general holds my interest and always will. So many animals wiped extinct, so many collosal projects and buildings, so many unknowns that will never be known, so much change, such a bloody and gruesome time in american hstory that I hope will never be forgotten. If i had to choose to be born in the past it wouldve undoubtedly been in those days. R.I.P. to All that lived then for they have all passed (except for a few clams who can live to be 400 years old).

You're right, it's not exactly the most _haunting_ photo, it is one of the most oldest, and the thing about the man in it, is we don't know who he is, his name, his age, or what he did during this time, but he had the distinct honor of being the first person to ever be on a photograph. An honor we can never actually properly give credit to.

Big Dawg First one isn't scary at all; it's due to the camera requiring you to stay still whilst the photo is taken, otherwise, the photo will be blurred. The reason the man appears is because he's standing relatively still for his shoes to be shined whilst other people would be walking.

Consistently great content! I think this has to be one of my favourites so far. Man, that Tornado picture is frightening, even now. I love the music on this, and all your other videos - it's obviously selected with care, as it always helps, not hinders, the visual element: often adding to the atmosphere of the piece, to eerie effect.

It's weird thinking about that that second picture. That is a world where Napoleon is in living memory, where the United States has only existed for 62 years, and Europe is the centre of the planet. A world that is further away from Adolf Hitler and World War 2 than we are today. It's a place that seems so strange. We all know it must have happened but it's hard to really imagine living back then isn't it? It might as well be fictional when we read about it in books. But looking at that man getting his shoes shined makes it easier to imagine myself there. I can imagine the horses, and what the weather was like on that day. He's acting as a human anchor in a picture that might as well be of another planet - the earliest photo of a human just living his life. he died at some point, never knowing how significant his shoe shining was on that one day in 1838

If the photo taken in France in 1883 of the man getting his shoes shined took 7 minutes to develop how is possible that anyone could capture lightning, using the equipment of the day, when lightning only lasts seconds if that? Also in the "shoe shine" picture people and other conveyances don't "zip" by. Wouldn't the people and wagons at least register as a blur?
@escoville1
@escoville1 6 жыл бұрын
The shoeshine picture dates from 1839. And no, you wouldn't even see a blur. As for lightning, of course you don't just take the flash of lightning. You leave your lens open in a thunderstorm until the lightning flashes, then you close the shutter. The lightning is bright enough to give you a picture.

Paris, France, 1838. The reason why we see only this man shining his boots is because he was the only standing still. The avenue was full of people but due to very slow speeds of the shutter (several minutes - maybe 5- 10) the only things that the film could capture was the standing still. Buildings, Trees and apparently this man. Not to haunting photo if you give a thought about it.

The daguerreotype for number 5 was freaky AF. Just seeing the dark shadowy figure in front of the empty streets looks like something out of a nightmare. the first image from number 4 looks haunting too.

The pic of the Tornado is just creepy. Creepier than a modern video or pic. The jet black look of the sky, the baron landscape. It's like seeing witnessing a dinosaur.

The first photo of the two on the pier were not ghosts. Cameras were primitive instruments way back in the 1880s and to take a photo, one took the lens cap off for about 5 or 10 seconds to allow enough light to get onto the photographic "plate", so the photographer would not want any sudden movement to spoil the shot. The two boys wandered in to get their water, unaware they were ruining someone's photo shoot. The second photo suffers from the same thing, long exposure results in unintentional anomaly due to primitive equipment.

Whoa, 1848 is the first photograph of a human with an exposure time of 7 minutes and later in this collection someone takes a photo of lightning in 1847 ? Even if it was 1888 for the lightning, the pics of gunslingers had an exposure time of several minutes ... me thinks something is anachronistic somewheres abouts.
