@1slotmech Bleachbit is another good alternative to CCleaner. Haven't used MSI Afterburner in years, so can't comment if it's still good.

Risky behavior - online banking. Checking your credit. Going to the SS website. DMV online. Online bill paying. Just because the connection might be OK, that is not an assurance that other things aren't stealing your personal info... Especially when using any Microsoft products or Google products.

Oh my, I remember trying to find the best antivirus software. Norton was awful and McAfee was overbearing bloatware. Windows Defender alone works great for me. I dropped CCleaner years ago after it went astray, but it was once a great program. Thanks Brett!

hibit uninstaller is pretty good it comes with in built virus total scan for startup items and running processes . it has portable version also . and does have pro version so no nagging upgrade to premium pop up

Bleachbit is commonly recommended and often used in the linux community which gives me more trust given their higher standards for privacy and security.

Hi Brett, I think this is a very useful video because especially with windows people get stuck in a rut and use the same program for years and years. For instance I got stuck using Winamp. In the late nineties it was simply the best in my view for media. However that was a long time ago. I liked the shortcut keys in Winamp, especially the global ones. Now I have learned how to set global shortcut keys in VLC I use that in stead. Also I agree with the anti-virus one as well. As long as one is careful and mindful of what they are doing I think Defender works fine. I uninstal any third party virus programs if they are on a newly bought laptop.

I still use Winamp. Why I don't WANT a program scanning my hard drive to find..and in some cases MOVE my fucking music files. And if I delete it from a playlist, I still want it to be on my computer.

4:01 this pc manager by microsoft offers everything that we already have in windows settings .. a better option would be hibit uninstaller it even scans startup programs and running process with virustotal doesnt run in background without any pro version so no popups to get premium

My memory must be bad. I'm pretty sure McAfee was ALWAYS the opposite of essential! Good call on CCleaner. I don't think it was ever necessary but I *did* think that way once.

CCleaner- a VERY long time ago was a viable system repair utility. Used it daily to clean up my client's Windows PCs and it worked very well. And then, things changed and now I use Glary Utilities. However... now I'm noticing even Glary is beginning to get 'weighted'.

McAfee was the overpriced, overpushed antivirus. I remember when every new Dell computer had a free 3-month trial of McAfee preinstalled :(

I use AVG Internet Security, Driver Updater and Tune-Up(formerly PC Tune-up) also have Malwarebytes. Never had a problem with these. I used to use NDD(Norton Disk Doctor) and still have it on a 3.5" floppy disc. I currently use WIN-10 and refuse to go to WIN-11 until ALL THE BLASTED BUGS are worked out 😐 That's why I loved WIN-7 as it was stable as a rock 🙂 BTW, I started using DOS 3 then DOS 4 with WIN-3.0 then 3.11 (on a 80286 based desktop) so I've been around for awhile 🙂

Discovered that "Microsoft PC Manager" cannot be used on Windows under a local account. You have to create a "Microsoft account" and log in to use it. Yes, it is free, but you pay with something else.

I'm in the UK and have W11 23H2, up to date as far as what Windows Update will offer. However I cannot get Microsoft PC Manager - it doesn't exist in the Microsoft Store. Even Microsoft's own web page (YT won't let me post the link) just says "Coming soon" 🤷‍♂ PS - I can find it via 3rd party links, but I'm not sure I want to.

Unless you’re an avid gamer, Windows itself is outdated, especially in the financial sense. There is talk going around that Microsoft may soon put Windows on an annual subscription plan, like Office 365. Linux is free, faster, needs fewer resources, and is easier to navigate. Nearly all commercial software can be replaced by Linux-compatible free software. I’ve been on Ubuntu Linux for more than five years and have yet to find anything that I used to do on Windows that I can’t do on Linux. And the transition was not scary, once I decided to do it.

I've watched enough linux youtubers to understand enough about linux to finally use it unlike when I tried it in the past. I understand the distros, package managers, bash, alternative software, and gnu coreutils enough to use it. I finally put it on a virtual machine and configured some things on it and felt comfortable with it. Even sshed into my steamdeck and made some VERY basic scripts on it. But nonetheless, I still don't have a real NEED or desire to switch. But if Microsoft made windows subscription based that would definitely do it for me.

@@BrettInTech Defender is only okay by itself if you're Internet-savvy and don't do things or go places or click on stuff you shouldn't. In corp or govt settings, all it takes is one normal user to make a mistake and MS won't catch the spread. That also applies to regular folks who have kids or parents that will make those kinds of mistakes.

They've both been exposed as spyware. Though, I think microsoft being the larger, more reputable company makes it less prone to super scummy dubious shit (though yes, still privacy nightmare). At least, a lot less prone to data breach. Regardless, if playing lesser of 2 evils isn't something you'd rather do, you can try bleachbit. Its widely recommended as the modern replacement for ccleaner. And used commonly in the linux community which value and vet the privacy and security of their software.

I don’t think Teams allows you to make a phone call to a landline as Skype does, but I may be wrong. Not so recently I recently needed to call Australia to a local business to cancel a software service (which ironically they only allowed to be done by a direct phone call), and did so by firing up my old Skype account, adding $5.00 to it, and spending about 80cents for a ten minute call. This was about 2-3 years ago. Most business don’t demand this way of cancelling (this seemed cynical to me, incidentally), but nevertheless, if it is needed, Teams may now have an option to call.

​​​​@@tomasrazgus7331Multiple malware testers have tests and metrics showing Microsoft defender to be a powerful anti-virus contender and one of the best. While not THE best, the fact that it's free, preinstalled, lightweight, low false positives, and non- intrusive makes it consistently and widely recommended as "good enough" for most people. The ones who aren't paid by AV sponsorships say buying AV software isn't worth it anymore. Especially when they add negative side effects the free ones don't. There are even scripts to harden microsoft defender even further. It certainly used to be a joke, but they really stepped it up compared to the past.

I'm still running W10. 7zip & Ccleaner still have functional, ease of use for me too, regardless of other people's opinions. Also, I've never had a MS account or used MS store. I'm not so much of a MS/Google whore and often on _bad_ sites. :)

While winzip and skype may be true, microsoft defender is consistently recommended because of the work they put in to actually make it good. So in this case they beat most competitors simply by having a superior product. It wouldn't be getting so many independent unpaid recommendations if it was still shit and they just pushed a monopoly. It actually has the benchmarks to back it. But im just talking about defender here, there's obviously countless examples of scummy monopolistic behavior.
