I began van life at 74 after losing my better half to cancer. Now at 75 I wish I had started doing this years ago...I absolutely love it! All my gear is stuff used on backpacking excursions (for 63 years). The Jetboil stove and GSI dual purpose pot are interesting and it looks like it's time to upgrade. I have the little scraper and it is so easy to keep my frying pan clean using the device. Well, Southern California is done, time to explore Northern California!

Surprised nobody is using a fishing tackle box for all of your kitchen utensils, spices etc etc. This has been an incredible tool for storing everything and keeping it nicely arranged.

I was thinking this at the beginning of the year.. nice tacklebox/caboodle (as I’m female) to store utensils/spices. Spices are a must if camping.. you can change the whole meal by using different ones.. same basic ingredients, but different spices. Been experimenting with food for at least 20 years.. and can safely say I can make the same things in a kitchen and at camp

Given the fact we camp a lot on the beach in Australia, the best camp hotplate / oven is a marine BBQ. Something like a Galleymate or equivalent. 316 stainless, rugged, high BTU rating and designed to operate efficiently and retain heat in high winds. You can also add things like roasting trays / racks / rotisseries. Not cheap but you get what you pay for.

I've had my Jetboil Genesis for a couple of years now and it's fantastic. I bought it for the same reasons you did - compact pack size, large cooking area when open, and excellent heat control. Unfortunately it is not available in Australia so I had to buy it from a store in the US and get it sent to a package forwarding facility who then sent it on to me - an expensive way to buy but well worth it.

I prefer my gas Coleman stove, old school but built like a tank, great for simmering or cooking and saves bringing or disposing of bulky propane ( I have both the one burner and the classic thus I can choose) pair it with a Trangia and is less space than bulky propane or Isobutane lights in all kinds of weather or altitude and in a pinch I can even syphon gas from my car if needed. That collapsable GSI set rocks! I’m getting it. Thanks for the great video and tips.

@Venture2Roam park days middle of week and mountain biking trails to ourselves, drove cross country 6 times last 4 yrs. Like going when life calls. Be it adventure or even recently caring for my grandmother, it's so different to not be on a schedule with public school or 9-5.... it's like life has it's own pulse and we usually don't notice it when ur on some public approved conveyor belt. I don't know that I cud ever commit to going back to the way life was b4. I never fit into a box and it's great coloring outside the lines. Cnt compare ourselves to others either which is a good thing too. Even how we see ourselves and others have changed too, not all in the rat race so I won't need to compare ourselves to anyone else except to always grow on a personal level.

I have one of those coleman folding ovens My dad at some point put some self tapping screws in it so it stays unfolded. It is now probably over 50 year's old and I love it. Another ting its good for it will hold 6 small propane bottles but make sure when you take the bottles out use it that you make sure those little plastic caps on the end of the bottles are all out of there. By the time i realized it was in there to late just cranked it until it burned it all the out, Leason learned. Makes the best biscuits Grands 5 pack. I have nice thick aluminum pan that works best the thin pans tend to not heat as evenly

An easy modification for your table height is to find a wood post in the diameter you need to fit the table legs securely in. Drill holes in the sections you have cut to the length you need to match your tail gate height. I have used these extenders that fit the long folding tables used for food preservation classes I co-teach at the local Agriculture Extension office.

I bought the jetboil genesis last week and it looks great. After watching this video I just purchased the collapsible gsi pot and pan combo and the scraper. its bad when you are 7 grand in and still buying stuff last minute. I figure it is better to bite the bullet once on all the gear I need rather than suffer over many trips with a family. I am used to high end gear with years of hunting trips under my belt but I quickly realized almost none of that stuff applies when you start bringing a family with a young baby, wife and dog. If you have a baby I recommend the Morrison infant sleeping bag as well as the fleece bunting bag from Patagonia. I bought us all some merino wool layers and a few ultralight down blankets. For my main gear I got a Eureka copper canyon 8 person tent and a tarp system to go above or use as an outdoor covered area. I also got our dog a good sleeping bag in case night temps get pretty cold. I bought a bluetti 2000w solar generator with 200watt panel, a coleman queen cot/air mattress. And I am using the Mr buddy heater as backup heat with a portable CO/temp/hygrometer. 2 coleman collapsable chairs with a collapsible table, 2 pairs of merrell hiking shoes, a garmin inreach mini 2 sos/gps handheld, 2 yeti 14oz coffe mugs, a lifestraw, a new water filration system, a comprehensive emt grade medical kit, a butane attachement candle lamp, heavy duty tent stakes with drill attachement for gavel, and mutliple small kitchen, repair and other items. The thermoelectric cooler can run off the solar battery for the entire week without needing the panel as well. I am saving the yeti cargo trunk and yeti dry sack duffle bag for next year. Still looking for cool gear that I am missing but I think we are good to go now for many years to come.

At home, Bushcrafting, Camping... I don't often bother with food that stores in a refrigeration. Don't care much for dealing with ice in a box or using power, although I do use power at home for the computer and sometimes a light if it's too dark to do something. I used to have a mini fridge and a water dispenser and cook on electric stove/oven, but decided to cut down on power use. I got this small pump that fits on the spout of them big water bottles that are used for water dispenser (hot & cold water) and I heat the water with my butane camp stove or mini burner (uses isobutane canister). I don't use the lights as much as others in the family do. Only when needed.

The MSR Scraper, I didn't even know it was meant for dishes. A friend gave me one for scraping ice of my backcountry ski bases and brushing snow outta my skin glue. Always have it in my ski jacket pocket. I might have to get another for dishes...

Hey FriesOnTheSide I got a cheap version of that mess kit (pot/pan/dish) at Walmart and it's not good quality and yes it is noisy moving around. I used it one time and not that satisfied with it, so I stored it away in my room to use for an emergency if something were to happen to the good items I have.

Great video. The only thing I disagree with is the 12v portable refrigerators. I bought one and I found it was either took up too much room. Or it was just impractical for just keeping beer and sodas cold. I have about 5 different sized ice chests from a huge one down to almost the size of a lunch box. I much prefer to grab the one I need based on what I'm doing. Me and my son only need a very small cooler for an overnight versus needing the big one for me my wife, my daughter and my son for a couple days. I don't get the whole it makes a mess thing? I guess if your packing bread in it or something? But other then that some really cool stuff. Just wish there were more options shown for us ice chest campers.

Great point! While we love having the fridge, it's not the RIGHT answer for everyone. In fact, I did another collab vid with some of these same channels focused on refrigerators, and we made a point to include someone who uses a cooler. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2rEiJeVhK2Yb5o

Regarding that MSR Scraper, the best time-proven way to clean on stuck food is to soak the item in water Warm water is better than cold, but cold still works. Leave it soaking for 30 minutes for hot water, 1-2 hours for cold water and stuck on food will fall off with little effort.

But me as a single guy with an old school vibe… mannn only things I prep to eat for camping are sandwiches, steaks, hotdogs, and breakfast stuff (eggs potatoes tortillas etc) Most I ever cooked on a campsite was French toast. Which really was like 3 extra ingredients, milk cinnamon, syrup to eat with
