I've seen a handful of Bollywood movies of various genres. Most of them are pretty good! Of the films I've personally watched they seem to fall into three broad categories: great production values (more-or-less on par with Hollywood), obvious B-movie production (but can still be fun), or Telenovella-esque over-acting.

Cecil, I've just been getting into Bollywood and Korean films myself since I have been tired of the slop coming out of Hollywood the last few years. I recently saw the movies Leo Bloody Sweet (aka Leo 2023), Shaitaan and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. Leo is an action film that was a lot of fun to watch. Shaitaan is a horror movie and Bhool is a horror comedy in the same vein as Stree. (Though I have yet to see Stree, I have to check that one out.) As far as Korean films I have only been able to see Exhuma. It's a movie that has eastern asian mysticism in it. Great movie that stars Choi Min-sik, known for playing the lead role in the movie Oldboy. All in all going to see foreign films has been a big breath of fresh air. Thank you for letting us know about these and other films. If I want alternatives to big budget films, I turn to your recommendations. Honestly, you got me enjoying Pam Grier's work, so thank you.

Thanks for the list, Cecil. I haven't seen many Bollywood films, so it's nice to have a list to work from. I remember seeing a "Bollywood slasher" that was 2 hours and 40 minutes long. I think it was a TV mini-series edited down. I swear you could have cut 90 minutes, and it wouldn't have affected the plot or kill count.
@GoodBadFlicksАй бұрын
About 15 years ago when I first was getting into Bollywood, I was working with a girl from there who explained it to me. Essentially (this is the super short version) couples in India don't go to the movies often, so when they do they want a full experience. This is why the movies usually have these lavish dance numbers and a big run time. Its a cultural thing where they want the longer productions, while outside of there audiences want tighter edits and aren't super big with musicals. Some of them are so good that they cross the cultural boundries and become hits outside of there but its not the norm. (and it shouldn't be) One of the things I like about Bollywood films is they are trying to please their audience first and foremost. I think too many American films suffer because they try to please everyone and end up pleasing no one.
@RavenHouseMysteryАй бұрын
@@GoodBadFlicks Thanks for the recap, Cecil. I agree that trying to make films that appeal to everyone on the planet usually doesn't work. Bollywood is its own culturally unique thing and that is what makes it special.

I worked in a cinema for about 13 years. We played Bollywood on semi regular basis. Mainly we shown the traditional song and dance ones, but did show the, how do I word it, the more normal type of films. These never seem to go down well. The traditional films would sell out, every time. When we showed a more normal style film, maybe as few a ten would see them.
@ssoory63432 ай бұрын
When cinema reached masses in India somewhere around 1950s, there were no theatres in towns and villages. There was something called "Touring Talkies" like circus. A small crew with a projector and the film reel would come once in 3-4 months hopping villages and announce the screening time, put up posters. They would tie a white cloth in an open field and people would sit on both sides. People would really get into the movie and wished it would last as long as it can, because nobody knew when the Talkies would come next to their village. With enough songs and dance numbers, the audiences would get their fill. Song and dance evolved, but it remained a permanent fixture in Indian movies. (I say Indian because there are a minimum of 18 official languages and 7 different major film industries).
