Here are two honourable mentions: Gotham Sirens issues 9 and 10: Eddie is hired by the sirens to find the person who framed them for murder. It was a great detective story, where Eddie shows off his deductive skills and his sarcastic wit. It has a few moments where Eddie thinks about his old life and how he misses it sometimes. Riddle me This from Legends of the Dark Knight issues 185-189. In my opinion, this story should have been #1 on your list. It is a fantastic Riddler story that reinvents. Eddie and turns him into more calculating and sinister foe for Batman. In the end, Eddie finally outfits Batman and gets the last laugh. Only downside with the story is that Eddie does not wear his classic outfit, but his depiction is perfect. It also delves into his past and reveals a shocking revelation from his childhood. I highly reccomend these two stories Rogues.

I love the Sirens one, but I already talked about it 100 years ago, back when I did a video on that entire series. As for Riddle me that, I know almost all Eddie fans love it -- there's even video reviews of it here on KZbin -- but I've never been the biggest fan. It has a similar effect on me like Crane's Absolute Terror does.

I'd like to defend Cluemaster. Personally, I've always liked him as a villain. Yes, he is a knock-off Riddler, but he also has a compelling dynamic with the Batfamily because of his relationship with Stephanie Brown. And I really liked how his status of a low-tier villain was used in Batman Eternal. When written by the right person, Cluemaster can be one of the best Batman villains.

Interesting how the concept of "Riddle of the jinxed Sphinx" & "The Riddler's robberies of the Riddler" was, a few years later (1999), also used in *Batman: Gotham Adventures* #11: The Oldest One In The Book". This one really made me feel for Nygma as a kid, the ending in particular is pretty depressing.... at the time I didn't know that it was a hommage to older stories. Another Riddler story arc that I read a couple years ago that should be mentioned, is Gail Simone's New52 "Secret Six" run, in which the Riddler is the antagonist of the first arc (5 issues long) of this new version of the team. I guess that recommending it as a "Riddler story" kinda spoils one of the early mysteries of the story, but it can't be helped ^^' Thank you Rogues for another great video, I wish a channel like yours existed when I got back into comic books after a long break, and started picking up stories & collections via the tried and testedtried and tested "one rogue at a time" approach. Could you do a video on the top 5 versions of The Joker and if you do then I would recommend the 2 jokers (Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska) from gotham and put both on one spot if you do them because both together are a great interpretation of The Joker with both providing a amazing interpretation of 2 halves of the joker. Plus they are played by the same actor so yeah. Jerome: The sadistic jester of genocide with a sick sense of humor and love of chaos who is unpredictable in every way possible with him also being overtop and always going all out with his schemes and ways of killing people with him also enjoying the thrill of being pumbled by someone like batman (Bruce) and seeing him coming so close to losing control by killing him (as shown in the brawl in a house of mirrors between Bruce and Jerome) Jeremiah: The clown prince of crime who is a highly intelligent criminal master mind who was once a kind, gentle, and sane man who went through one bad day in order for him to transform into a insane monster with him also having a close love (as in he sees him as his only friend in this world of lunacy) hate (because of Bruce always standing in his way) relationship with batman (bruce)

"Riddler on the Move" was the first Batman issue I'd read in over a year (I didn't buy the $0.50 issues at the time) and my first encounter with Ernie Chan's Batman. The issue looked a lot better than most of his later issues; maybe Dick Giordano was basically redrawing his work at the time. However, it's still one of my favorite Riddler stories and probably the first one I read. Also, any story from the Chuck Dixon/Graham Nolan run on Detective is worth a gander; I remember enjoying the three-parter with Cluemaster as well.

The Riddler is one of those characters that is hard to enjoy in other languages, given how many riddles are based on word play that doesn't translate very well, or knowledge that's common for one region, but obscure in others. You really need some top notch translators to rework his riddles into something that can be enjoyed by the readership that they're being presented to, and that's always gonna be difficult when quality control faces a language barrier, and the producers and distributors can't appreciate the end result.
@jamesbevan99395 жыл бұрын
I'm also a fan of "Riddler on the Move." A nice way of working to revamp Nigma into the Bronze Age while retaining his cunning and complexity, and it has one of his best deathtraps. "Run, Riddler, Run", I could never really get into. The social commentary comes off as a bit too heavy handed, and I'm not a big fan of the art style. Plus I'm annoyed that there was never an answer to the riddle "If a carrot is a carrot, then what is a pea?" I really loved the three parter where Riddler is running Batman and Cluemaster ragged. A fantastic display of his ego and hidden cruelty. Plus, I love the hidden layers to his scheme. As for his henchgirls, I always preferred when they were called Quiz and Query over Query and Echo. The Impulse issue... what else can I say other than it's hilarious and must be read. My nomination for a great overlooked Riddler story is "The Oldest One in the Book" from the Batman: Gotham Adventures run (tie-in to the New Batman Adventures animated series). It involves Eddie trying to avoid imprisonment while satisfying his need to challenge Batman by sending the Dark Knight clues that will help him arrest other criminals, leaving Nigma safe.

Huh. And I was joking about Cluemaster being in your next video. After much contemplation, I've now decided Riddler is my favourite Batman villain. But even so, I'm not super against Cluemaster's existence. In the same way I'm not against The Prankster's existence. There's room for more than one puzzling rogue. I do have an idea though. What if they played Cluemaster up as more of a gameshow themed villain? Riddler tried making a gameshow with the Riddle Factory. But as you said in your review of it, it didn't really stick. So why not give that idea to Cluemaster and make it his whole deal? An evil underworld gameshow host. Instead of riddles, he'd be more trivia based. And if we wanna avoid having two villains of a similar gimmick in the same rogue's gallery, maybe he should be set up against a different hero? What do think? Good idea? If so, which hero would you put him up against? At the very least, he's still better than The Baffler.

Oh, joy! My second favorite Batman Villain, and one of my favorite characters ever, returns! HUZZAH! Let's see what's cooking here... Riddler on the Move - You know, I've actually HEARD of this story, but I somehow have never taken the time to read it...I should probably do so. Like, IMMEDIATELY. There's a certain list where I feel this story would belong. I think the reason I never looked it up is because the plot is very reminiscent of a Joker story - "The Crime of the Month Club" - which is a personal favorite of mine. And we all know how often people seem to unfortunately think Eddie-boy is a Joker Clone. I didn't really want to read a story that would exacerbate that. However, hearing you describe it here, and seeing the imagery FROM the comic...now I really want to read it. It sounds like it would be BETTER than "The Crime of the Month Club," for a start! Run, Riddler, Run - Another story I've heard of, but have never read...and, I'm very sorry to say, I'm not sure I will. I may give it a shot, but in this case, the description and the imagery gives me mixed emotions. Riddle of the Jinxed Sphinx - ...HOW DID I FORGET THIS STORY?! NOW I HAVE TO UPDATE A CERTAIN LIST, ABSOLUTELY! (shakes fist at sky) CURSE YOU, MEMORY!!! Baddd Girls, etc. - ...SEE PREVIOUS RESPONSE. In fairness, though, in this case, I'm not sure it would be in my top ten, but proooobably one of my new Honorable Mentions. When is a Riddle Not a Riddle? - ...All right, in fairness, this one I HAVEN'T heard of before, let alone read. Thank you for recommending it. (pauses) Got nothin' else to say. XD Fine work, as always!

Batman Adventures (volume 1), Batman and Robin Adventures, Batman Gotham Adventures and Batman Adventures volume 2 which actually takes place after the animated series and shows what Gotham was like during Justice League. Including new status quos for many iconic rogues ESPECIALLY Eddie. Riddler's story here continues from Gotham Adventures issue 11. I remember the Cluemaster in "THE BATMAN" animated series. Not a compelling character, visually speaking, and with a stupid backstory. he was a prodigy spoiled kid hosted in a quiz tv show. He was so unbarebly irritating that the producers rigged one of his games to make him loose and get rid of him. He gets crazy and became a secluded hyperobese man (cause he won a life-time support of snacks, go figueres) that, don't ask me why, wears a orange mask and in his house (???) ... and, again don't ask me why, for henchmen he had this sort of NINJA MIDGETS(??? XD ?????) maaan that was so stupid!! .... 1 thing was nice about it, thou: he wasn't a Riddler knockoff. He was obsessed with the demonstration of his knowledge, he had the answer to anything. If the Riddler was "the question", he was "the answer". He gets mad when he does not know the answer, he is not compelled by the challenge, he is easly frustrated and plays only if he is sure to win. But he does not leave clues. His motivation was too slefcenterd, but his gimmick and personality were a bit more interesting than "Poor Version of Riddler". Since he had poor character apparence and motivation (and ninja hoompa loompa), he was not good enough to became a recurrent villain in the show (how pity), but I would have loved a rivalry between this kind of Cluemaster and the Riddler.

Sure. For Scarecrow I'd say get his "New Years Evil" issue from 1998 - the story is titled "Mistress of Fear". For Bane I'd say get "Vengeance of Bane" and Knightfall. For Catwoman, I'd say get issues from her solo series - it started in 1993. There are tons of great issues in that series, so I'd suggest you pick the ones that seem to interest you. My personal favorite is the three parter where she faces off against Scarecrow though. There's also a great three parter where she faces off against Joker. Issues 54 and 0 are great one shots too.

It's a Brave and the Bold comic, but I'd have to do a lot of digging in my collection so I can't tell you the exact number offhand. Someone kidnaps a famous mystery writer, and perhaps kills them. But they do leave behind a series of messages on cue cards for Batman to follow. Meanwhile someone busts Riddler out of Arkham, and leave behind a trail of ce cards that lead Riddler to where Batman is. They team up until they get to a large supply of cash and a different cue card for each. Riddler's tells him the cash in a payoff for killing Batman and the Riddler betrays him. Batman goes on alone and is lead into a death trap. I don't want to give away too much in the comment section. But hopefully I've given enough for you to find it, if you decide to do a second video.
