Great video. Given how far single engine prop planes have come in terms of speed, range, and comfort, along with fuel efficiency, it's no wonder why twin propellers are going extinct. Heck, the fastest twin prop made for charter, the Aerostar 702 is now outclassed by modern single prop planes (maybe outclassed is a poor choice of words). You can get an incredible range and speed and comfort in a TBM 930 and it's hard to justify maintenance costs for the nearest twin engine prop to it's equivalent. Just my 2 cents.
@morteparla6926
@morteparla6926 4 жыл бұрын
That comparison is seriously flawed. The Aerostar 702 is a twin PISTON engine, the TBM 930 is a single TURBOPROP engine. Two different worlds. Now compare a TURBOPROP twin to the TBM 930.
@swagger897
@swagger897 4 жыл бұрын
@@morteparla6926 You're missing the point though, and it's a great comparison. That TBM's cost /hr is going to be below that of the Aerostar. An Eclipse jet is nearly on par with an Aerostar's cost /hr too, with the only difference being entry cost. You can fit an E jet into a T-hangar... you can't do that with the Aerostar..

Love that DA -62. The wings are impossibly narrow. I know less drag, but there's just not much wing for lift. Beautiful.

@ryanchristopherson374 5 жыл бұрын
The DA-62's wings are almost exactly 10 feet wider at the tips than the Baron. There's plenty of lift. Performance wise, the two are all but identical with one exception, the Baron carries 197 US Gallons while the DA-62 carries 87 US Gallons.

Gary, the DA42 wing area is only 2 square metres less than the Baron. DA42s regularly fly over where I live, they definitely look more like glider wings.

Judy, a couple of comments. IF this was supposed to be a list of all the production, certified twin engin piston powered aircraft, you missed a couple. First, the DA-42 is still in production, the smaller sibling of the DA-62. The Piper Seminole is still in production, a four seat trainer aircraft. The G58 hasn't used IO-470's since the B55 series, the G58 uses IO-550s.

You confused Gas-oil (diesel fuel) or Jet-A wich are fuels and Diesel wich is a type of engine. (AE 330 for DA62 ...) And AE 330 is a PISTON Diesel turbocharged engine, not turboprop ...

My takeaway from this video. Two comments and a question. C 1) Diamond make some funky looking aeroplanes; C 2) Even nearly 50 years since it was introduced, the Piper Senaca is still a seriously good looking machine; Q 1) The Diamond has diesel engines? How common are diesel engines in aviation? Ok, those were two questions. Sorry.
@msproule
@msproule 7 жыл бұрын
DA62 and DA42 are the only piston twins using "diesel" or better know in av lingo as Jet-A1, et al. The early versions were a bit clunky. With the addition of a FADEC on the Diamond's the fuel flow on these engines is down right miserly.
@phils4634
@phils4634 6 жыл бұрын
Michael - aerodiesels (such as the 180hp AE330) are really going to make a big difference to smaller short-haul, mixed passenger / freight operators. Jet / Turboprop's great for medium to long range, but for those very short-haul journeys (1 hour or less, small passenger / freight loads) jet is a poor choice. The power output of the new aerodiesels is increasing - 200hp will be coming soon enough - and with their miserly use of an already cheaper fuel (Jet-A's cheaper per litre than AvGas), AND remarkable service intervals - this really IS the future of short haul mixed passenger / freight operations. It would be interesting to see the resurgence of the likes of the Britten-Norman Trislander (with diesels), and maybe the development of a whole new range of diesel - powered, light mixed use airframes.
@glibsonoran
@glibsonoran 6 жыл бұрын
The Diamond diesels are modified Mercedes 2.0L Automotive diesels. So they run with a modified ECU: instant starts, automated run up and engine check, no need for dual magnetos and ignition systems, no worrying about shock cooling on descent (they're liquid cooled), much better fuel ecomomy, they're turbo charged so full power up to about 13,000 ft, and outside the US where aviation gas is rare the fact that they run on JetA is very useful. The biggest drawback is they're quite a bit heavier than equivalent power gasoline engines.

Your MUSTANG doesn't have to worry about the weight of its engine; while for the aircraft it is often the heaviest component and for aircraft it's all about the weight - use the lightest engine that will get the job done. That said, yes these are small fast engines and like your Mustang, should be flying for many years with correct maintenance.

This must only be counting "real" aircraft, as in those with long-distance and/or commercial potential. The little Rotax piston engines ubiquitous in ultralight and light sport aircraft have revolutionized hobby flying and, while still not cheap, put a lot of people in the air who otherwise would have been priced out.

In the USA airspeed is figured in knots (nautical miles per hour) and is the figure used when filing an FAA flight plan. Multiply knots by 1.15 to get MPH. The 175 knot cruise airspeed shown equates to 201.25 MPH.
@maddogmorgan1
