Women in my family were actually executed for witchcraft in not Salem in the 1700s. My brother and I actually found this out while helping his girlfriend, the town historian go through and reorganize old records. On a side note old records from a small town are really boring most of the time.

G'day, I'm an Australian agnostic atheist. As an Australian, I suspect that I could be a witch or an atheist or a stack of other things for the foreseeable future without any dramas. Your accent sounds English and while I can point to a lot of things about the British government that I don't like, I doubt that you would be in danger from your government for your religious practices in the foreseeable future. However, I don't think that applies to women in the US. There women are taking additional steps to ensure their menstrual cycles do not become state knowledge, lest they be charged with abortion. (Worryingly, women who fall pregnant, don't know it and then miscarry after as little as 6 weeks are theoretically in the firing line of some of the anti-abortion laws.) About 70% of people in the US think that abortion should be allowed at least in some circumstances. The laws do not reflect that opinion. Similarly, it's been decades since a Republican president actually won the popular vote, but there have been a lot of Republican presidents in that time. So, in the US, I think there is a distinct possibility that Christian Nationalists could gain power in government (especially at the state level) and that they would go after people for witchcraft. Christian Nationalists aka Christo-fascists would not win the popular vote but that doesn't seem to matter in the US. The trick, then, for someone in a jurisdiction where the Christo-fascists have gained power, is to recognise that they are in danger. If you've been regarded as a productive and law-abiding citizen for decades and you don't change anything you do, it would be really hard psychologically to accept that something like your religion is suddenly putting you in danger in the community where you've been accepted, even valued for a long time. So I'd say if you want to avoid witch-hunters the first thing you need to do is to be aware of what is going on in politics and the local culture and maintain situational awareness. Regarding local culture, while thousands of black people were lynched in southern US states, it wasn't actually legal. But the authorities tolerated it and even encouraged it. Witch hunters don't have to be the cops, furnished with legitimate arrest warrants, they may be vigilante groups, they may be like Hitler's Brown Shirts. If you are getting the sense that things could be a bit dangerous for you, that's a very good time to start to plan your move. My next tip would be that the witch hunters will almost certainly use different words to the original witch hunters. They won't be referring to "witches", they'll find some other term, perhaps polytheists or pantheists. They might say that the use of herbs constitutes practising medicine without a licence.
