Hijo, Your videos help me and my friends with caring for plants, thank you. I would like to share that I observed Hoyas (hoya plants) in the wild in the Northern Territory of Australia. Those hoya were growing in rock crevises and were clearly many years old.

I thought that they came from India;however, Hoya Australis clearly must come from somewhere in Australia with a name like Australis-Right? I think they might be in New Zealand and maybe even South America. They are ruthless vines. Mine strangle each other and grow up each other. It's odd. They would grow great on a trellace. They love to get super strong light to produce a lot of flowers. And they smell powerful-Powerful!!! Like Jasmine and honeysuckle combined. counted 31 flowers on mine today. The nectar that they produce is delicious and hummingbirds love it.

Got my first hoya this past June. I think it is nicknamed "Hindu rope". It grows so slow, but I see new shoots and I moved it outdoor under a covered patio. It's good to know that they like to dry out in between watering. I'm at Northern California and the humidity is very low most of the time.
@johnburke5053 Жыл бұрын
Put your hoya in a 2 gallon pot. Give your hoya lots of water. Fertilize your hoya with Calcium and SuperThrive Give your Hoya strong super bright high level light. I have seen them in California in direct hot baking sunlight where the leaves turn golden-not green Hoyas need strong but not direct sunlight on the leaves. They should always go in a window where they will flower, be Very fragrant and drip the sweetest nectar that hummingbirds truly love. In California a hoya would love a trellace or to hang under lattice. Hoya Purpafresca is a good variety but Hoya Australis is the go to variety that produces the flowers with the most sugar-be careful of your carpeting. When in bloom put a towel under your plant. Mine is in full bloom now with 31 blooms. By the way when that many blooms are fading they kind of smell diaperish-Warning.

Actually hoyas grow quite slow compared to the average plant species. Also you absolutely do NOT want to prune unless the vine on your plant is dead or dying, or if your plant is very large and several years old. If you prune your plant all you will do is keep delaying the time it takes for your Hoya to bloom. On average it takes about 2 years for a Hoya to bloom depending on the age of the plant, the size when you first bought it, it’s growing conditions, and the particular species. When it does bloom, the flowers are born on a short stalk called a spur. The spur remains on the plant even after the flowers fall off, the plant will continue to bloom on the same spur year after year. You never want to prune the spur off. There is a wealth of information on the subject if you want to google it further. 😊

Thnk you for the info. I just recieved a whole cup full of propagated hoys Bella cuttings , I think it's enough to make a good size plant with . Very excited and tryin to learn what I can, as I am brand new to plants.
@mwoods46082 жыл бұрын
idek if that's always true. I had tiny small cuttings and plants bloom and very old big ones that dont. cutting your plant won't change the amount of time it takes for it to bloom but if you cut off a stem with a peduncle then obviously your plant won't bloom because it's no longer available. That doesn't mean it won't bloom from another stem that you didn't cut....
@spencer.margaret2 жыл бұрын
I never cut mine and it’s doing great. Even new leaves grow from the ones that have fallen off in pot. I know nothing about plants and it’s completely fine. The showing off before dying is nice because then I water it 🤷🏽♀️

Very useful tips ... but still didn't help to find a clue why my hoyas are struggling or even dying. Plants are in very coarse soil, well-aerated and well-draining; placed in bright shade; new shoots appear often but very soon after, they lose leaves and stop growing any further, dry and dye. Sometimes all leaves turn yellow, drop, and the whole plant dyes back. I suspected not enough watering considering well draining soil but from what I keep hearing hoyas like drying, as you said too. Why then my hoyas struggling ?!

Pruning a prolific Hoya!! That's a new one😳 This plant doesn't need to be prune at all. All you need is to train the new runners on the tralis and wait for it to produce new leaves and peduncles.

Still here binge watching 😁. Im wondering if u could do a video on plants that are good to have by the window sill? There is a lot of plants that don’t like direct sunlight ( or not the ones that I have). All of my windows get direct sunlight at some point of the day but probably the longest light that shines in is the afternoon sunlight. Also having plants on the window sill right above the heating element is not either good because of the heat and dry air right? So I’m just confused of which plants is ok to have in the window sill? Or maybe many are ok to be placed by the window u just care for them differently? Would love to hear your opinion on it and even some examples on plants that thrive in the window sill.

It doesent apply to all hoya!!!! Most of them dont have this shiny layer like australis, it doesent mean it sick or you should choose another one. NOT all of them like to dry out between watering. There are thin leaf hoyas wich like it a little bit on the moist side (not soaking, but dont let them be bone dry) And there are hoyas who dont like that much light to grow fast
