What a nice video. I'll add some additional points. 1. Estonia is in NATO. 2. Safety. Beginning of the first grade, children are going to school by public transport by themselves. Does your country have it? 3. High level education. 41.2% of the working-age population have higher education. and it is rising. 4. We have the most unicorns per capita in the world.

Estonia has long thought of themselves as more Nordic. Thirty years ago they didn't have much of an argument. In July 2012 I went to Lviv for the first time. I told friends back in Tallinn that in comparison Estonia was definitely Nordic. :-)
@ConorClyneNewEuropeАй бұрын
In 2024 that comparison is even more clear. 😊

Estonian here, who works in Tallinn and lives in Tartu and visited over 95% of the country and has visited a bit of Scandinavia, Western and Eastern Europe, USA, Iceland and Middle East. I'm pretty happy here, it feels like a small village compared to most bigger cities, yet you have good infrastructure, convenient lifestyle options, reserved intelligent people (so no "buy one shoe, get other free" street hustle), safe streets and decent individual taxes (for business it's not cheap) and social security is up to debate. However, because it's a village compared to the world, people aren't very interested in immigrants and multinationalism, wealthy tourists are going to have an amazing time, people migrating due to work, studies or personal reasons are going to feel differently, as you will definately feel like an outsider regularly, though every now and then you might feel like a superstar for a day or night, you also get mild racism and hate with it. We have a saying "an estonians favorite food is another estonian". We're not very nice, often pretty selfish and careful with who we let in our life. I guess we're pro transactional hospitality types. Bare that in mind, if you're getting good first impressions of the country and decide to become a resident for a while. It's not all sunshine and rainbows, infact we don't have a lot of it here and we actually like it this way. And appreciating dark humor definately helps, though we do get quite a few snowflakes due to the seasons. Thanks for the video!

Estonia is indeed reminiscent of Finland. The languages are related, no? (Finno-Ugric languages are fiendishly difficult. Maybe not for you!)
@ConorClyneNewEuropeАй бұрын
I didn’t learn much Estonian and I don’t speak Finnish so it’s hard for me to say. 🤔
@KohaAlbertАй бұрын
@@ConorClyneNewEurope the languages are related, and there's a notable degree of mutual intelligibility, especially through old archaisms (enough so that Estonians were capable to self learn Finnish through Finnish media during the eighties). However these two are no mere dialects, and differences are much felt - one must learn the other's language for actual intelligibility. Think Dutch vs English for a rough comparison maybe.
@ConorClyneNewEuropeАй бұрын
@ Ok, good to know. I’m considering learning Estonian in 2025.
@dannib0yАй бұрын
@@ConorClyneNewEuropeboth are like the same language but we as Estonians took/borrowed so many words from Germanic and Slavic language, because we were invaded so many times through the history. It's easier for me to understand Finnish than the other way around.

I've been to Tallinn on a day trip from Helsinki. I absolutely loved it. I would move there unreservedly if I could speak the language. As a woman I can't say anything about fellow women but I consider Estonian men some of the most handsome Europeans together with Ukrainians. I like the fact that the summers are cool. I hate heat. And there is enough to keep you busy on a weekend. I don't know about friendliness because I was only there for a day and it's cosmopolitan enough to prevent foreign visitors from guessing the nationality of the person they interact with. It's a lovely place. I agree, more Nordic than Eastern European. Baltic is the right word for it. Once you visit the Baltics you realise that what people consider Eastern European is actually Slavic. And Estonia, and the Baltics, are not.

I hope you will enjoy your furthers travels and that you will be safe. In general, a nice video of Estonia, you had done the basic homeworkd NB! We were not part of the Soviet Union. We were occupied by it. And as for immigration: Stalin just put millions and zillions on people in cattle wagons and took everyone away from their homes. So Estonians ended up being taken to Siberia (if they survived the journey, with families mostly broken apart and the men executed), lots of Russians deported here the same way. All that with the aim of deleting all nations and creating this one SOVIET nation- Ell, I do not know about others, but in the Baltics, particularly, in Estonia, it never worked because our identity and culture and education were just way too good to make it possible to delete us. Not a part of the Soviet Union, this is a legal fact. And we were definitely never communists But yes, make the distinction: we were not a part of the Soviet Union. We were occupied by them Fun fact: There used to be 2% Russians in Estonia before WWII. Now it is a 30 percent, all thanks to Stalin. Those Russian are a really sad generation because who are they? They are not Russian anymore. no Russian contacts, no homes or families there? They are not Estonians and no Estonians really wants them here. Almost no mixed marriage so they just live in a parallel world missing out on the entire Estonian culture, as well as Russian culture. Just a lost generation. No problems between us to speak of but we just ignore each other. A lot of the Russian live on welfare because since they do not speak the language they can not get job. If you guy are looking for a place to live, definitely leave out Latvia and Lithuania. Still very Russified and I see no change coming. Latvia has more half of population in Riga Russian, hence lots of corruption, filth, etc Lithuania got lucky, very few Russians. But they do not see to need it even, they are vey very eastern Europe in mentality all on their ow. I last asked them where my bus platform was, could ot find it. And I got yelled at as if hell was on fire. Doods, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are not one country. They are just neighbours. Just like the US has Mexico for a neighbour but can you draw any conclusions based on that as for similarities

@@AnnEllis-b3z well there’s little chance of such scams nowadays in Odesa. The perpetrators have presumably left and their victims are not likely to come to Ukraine with the war. Nonetheless with the dependency on US/UK/EU aid, I’d say such scams are not likely to be tolerated going forward in any case.
