I just turned 48 and awfully late to investing with barely any portfolio except my 401k, I have a decent amount of cash saved up and with inflation currently soaring AGAIN, I’m getting worried about retirement, my intention is to retire at 55. How best do I maximize my savings of over $140k
@garnold-l5p3 күн бұрын
I think the safest strategy is to diversify investments. But if you need proper advice, consider speaking with a financial expertise. Don't get me wrong, you can do it on your own, but financial advisors have a lot more knowledge and expertise in this area.
@Mlanderos-t9e3 күн бұрын
Agreed, I've always delegated my excesses to an advisor, since suffering major portfolio loss early 2020, amid covid outbreak. I'm now semi-retired and only work 7.5 hours a week, with barely 25% short of my $1m retirement goal after subsequent investments to date.

This is my fifth year after retirement. I’ve been following the 4% rule thing I saw on a KZbin channel, but this isn’t really how hard I expected things to be. After I cashed out a lump sum, I still have about $760k left, but at this rate, and with how the market is (we were putting money away in an index fund), I’m starting to get worried.
@BirgitLanzafame2 күн бұрын
Amazingly, you were able to save that much during your active years. Not a lot of people can save that much in a lifetime. But now you are retired and depend on your investment, it’s best you redistribute your capital, so you are not left devastated during a market crash or recovery. To simplify the process, you could allocate your resources with the help of a financial advisor.

My mom continued to work & dad took care of the house & did odd jobs for his adult 3 children & kept himself busy mowing their lawns, fixing the lawnmowers, etc. Then my mom had about 8 years of cancer & he took care of her until she passed. Today, he is 91 years old with early to moderate Parkinsons & although his age is showing/getting frail- his mind is sharp, he can't do a lot of the fine tuning things he used to be able to like holding a small screw in place, he gets tired/naps. In many ways, he is in better shape than other 91 year old seniors. He is mobile, watches his money, stays politically informed, etc.I look after him carefully & keep up with MD appointments. His forced early retirement is probably why he is still here today & doing well despite the Parkinsons. You never know how things are going to turn out.

I was an investment advisor for 22 years. The advice in the video is excellent and true for the typical American. But for people who have a good portfolio of about $5m, if you look around, most people are still active at 70 (I live in LA) but by 80, not so much, so enjoy yourself at some point before it’s too late. That nice vacation will pay for your last week in the nursing home. There is a difference between wasting money and spending it. Be value-conscious.

I agree entirely. I recently retired at the age of 54 with about $1.9 million in outside retirement funds, no debt, and a relatively small amount of retirement funds compared to the overall value of my portfolio over the previous three years. I retired at 57 & moved in next door to my folks. Probably not enough saved, but the house is ours, and I cherish the time I've been able to spend with them as they age. Within 6 mos, I started eating more healthily, took up daily hikes or swims, and was off all the meds! If you can do it, it's worth the financial sacrifices. 6 yrs so far, and I don't regret it one little bit! I did go back to teach with my sister in her last year because they couldn't find a credentialed teacher... I enjoyed working with her, but my healthy routines suffered, and really brought home the fact that I needed to be retired to be healthy.

I made a somewhat sudden decision to retire 2 years ago at the age of 62. I cannot begin to describe the utter feeling of peace that comes from letting go of workday stress. I have been able to be available to family members going through difficult health issues and spend a lot more time with my grandchildren. What surprised me was the cost of working- transportation and vehicle maintenance, work clothing and training, professional fees and insurance- these are things I didn't even factor in when I retired and I was pleasantly surprised at the savings.

I have passive incomes from 3 paid off homes, retirement from 21 years active duty Army, health insurance paid by Tricare, and stock investments from past 30 years. Been a workaholic all my life and my biggest regret was not spending much time with my family. Now I’m traveling and spending time with my family and friends. I’m not greedy and still live humble as my passive income comes to about $8k a month. Whether it is Minnesota or Miami or New York or California, the whole of North America has become unaffordable to most of the sub-millionaire population. My solution has been to leave North America altogether to love, live, work, and laugh in the Caribbean, which has hundreds of places that offer much lower cost of living, safety, peace, no massacres in schools, no kidnapping, no bank robberies, excellent weather, a healthy lifestyle, and a wide range of cuisines, accommodation options, and occupations/business-opportunities....For leas than what my friends and colleagues are paying for a one-bedroom apartment in Miami or Toronto (never mind New York, London, Vancouver, Hawaii, or Los Angeles), I can have my ENTIRE budget and space left over ....With programmes like Barbados's Welcome Stamp and Montserrat's Remote Workers programme, persons can come from around the world and have the best of both worlds.

The real estate market always fluctuates but crashes are not very common, especially these days with mortgage rates most likely on the down trend. We sold our home 6 months ago and do plan on buying again in the next year, but for now we are renting and really loving it. If you would "love to move to a warmer climate," then just do so. Do your research before you move so that you know where you want to go and plant new roots. Life is short...live it happily. Good luck to you.

What can i do? I am 58 years old and on the cusp of retirement. I have been incapacitated since 2009. My wife is retiring at the age of 53 in three months and my $750k portfolio is down to $492k. While we were both still in good health and could enjoy spending time outdoors doing the things we loved to do, we wanted to retire. Since our marriage of 29 years ago, we have been investing and saving money in anticipation of this. It's a good idea to get married to someone who shares your views on this. To retire earlier than your colleagues, you and your partner will need to work together. To your first point, I can definitely relate.

I accepted a half-time position as an educational interventionist and I’m loving it! I was able to help my aging mother when she needed me- this was one of the most important reasons I closed my business which was consuming all my time and corroding my health. I had time to cure by myself all "incurable" diseases I was told to have. I never stopped being creative and active. In 2003 I taught myself to design websites which till now generate income. Both my husband and I have excellent health, we don't take any meds and don't need doctors. We get up every morning full of gratitude and energy to do what we both love to do. We are frugal, but not depriving ourselves from anything we value while also generous with those who deserve to be helped. Life is beautiful this way.
