If I buy the Spyder and K-swap it, I'm blaming you. My wife would come for you after I rat you out. It's like that among Spyder enthusiasts. What? No one told you? :) Keep on it, man. Very informative work you do. Who would not want a light-weight mid-engine reliable sports car with a power to weight ratio the K24 can give? See? Your fault!

I noticed you kept saying cost was the only downside to the kswap. If you don't mind me asking...not counting labor what is the ballpark price for everything needed parts wise? I'm debating whether to do 2zz turbo or k24a turbo. Thank you for your time.

Thank you for the review, you brought up good points. As an engineer, I was hoping to have the 5 points bullet listed and reviewed item by item, so I was clear about what they were. I sped through the additional comments and tried to get the gist and this us my take, not necessarily in order: 1) K series availability is great 2) Stock power is much better, and the ability to use standard internals for higher power applications, 3) Lots of aftermarket support 4) Reliability 5) ?

Great video, I just found your channel and plan to watch the build series. I picked up a 1991 MR2 and I'm starting the K swap. Just posted a video of starting the K24 on my garage floor on the shipping pallet. I'm waiting on the Hux racing cannibal kit which uses the e153 Toyota transmission. I'm near Seattle too so I'll be looking out for your stickers.

Wanted to say thanks for the content. I'm on the fence between a k20/24 hybrid build, or a 2ar for my spyder currently. I had a turbo 2zz, but the transmission was extremely fragile, and while I am in love with the idea of a 2.7 NA 2ar build, people are starting to report eb60/62 bearing failures, so I'm a little gunshy about another weak Toyota transmission. No shortage of people abusing the Honda 6spd with huge amounts of boost, and little to no reported failures. Also, I really like those fender flares! Wanna be a cool guy and tell me where I can grab a set?? Thanks!

Combine K-series power with MR2 handling and braking. You can't get much better than that for under 30k. Plus the car is super light and mid-engine. I'm never selling my MR2 Spyder. I want to buy an mk1 next.

While I disagree with your hp output estimates for the 2zz , they’re capable of 210-20 whp (check out R9k) I do agree there’s no contest. K series is just more power and options, especially when you go for the bigger k24.

Even though I run a 220 crank HP 2ZZ, I still would like to go for K20. Same reasons: more aftermakert toys, more useable torque. Although, I personally think that K20 is a better option than K24 just of its ability to rev. But thats perhaps the discussion of HP/rpm vs. Torque :) oh, and here it is also great due to eligibility in the class of up to 2 litres. Great vids. Check up my channel - there is one vlog in English and I will make more content eventually.

A k24 at 8000 rpms limit, or a k20 at 8600 limit is only half the question. The gearbox plays a roll as well. U should have a shorter final drive with the k20 to enjoy the benefit of the extra rpm. U cant compare both engines with the same gearbox setings

There almost identical engines but me being a Toyota fan have to agree that at the end of the day, the k series are a better overall motor compared to the 1zz or 2zz. As long as your happy man who cares what anyone else thinks, it's your car at the end of the day, enjoy it and have fun with it!

They’re pretty far from identical, just the valve angle shows the age of the 2ZZ, it’s a product of the mid-late 90’s and the wide angle shows it, just like a B series. The K series takes the more modern approach and goes for a much more narrow angle, as it’s a product of the early 00’s for the most part. The K series is also capable of more degrees of VVT/VCT and has a slightly better flowing head

I originally wanted to buy an sw20 and 2gr swap it. Ended up buying a spyder to k swap. I read a lot about how 2gr owners were disappointed by the throttle response of the 2gr because it's drive by wire. If you plan to make it a straight line car then it probably won't matter, but I plan on going to the track. Cable driven throttle is so much better for the feel of the car.

TLDR; more aftermarket does NOT = better. Why have 20 manifolds to choose from when your car only needs ONE good and proven one? why spread the funding to 20 companies so that 20 might die? why not just have 2 or 3 so that 2 or 3 companies can refine and survive for the future of the platform?? keep things simple - *repeatable, and replaceable*. 10 years from now obscurities will be impossible to replace. and that is the downfall of "TONSSSSS of aftermarket choice" sometimes "a LOT of aftermarket" isn't necessarily better, the more important question would be if all those choices are interchangeable or SIMILAR quality. As a tuner of many many (many... many) things, I will say this; I'd rather have 2 aftermarket brands to choose from that are both good, than 50 good brands, and 300 hit or miss brands. all of which don't necessarily mesh and the hordes of "idk.. do your research" gatekeepers on the forums who don't actually know (and never did) the answer to questions about all these aftermarket parts. Nothing worse than spending money 3 times for a single task. and it happens all the time to us when some kid brings a pile of parts to assemble onto their engine and they don't even fit together. It also means those 2 brands are go-tos and will generally last longer because of 500 different companies vying for supremacy, hundreds will go bankrupt and things get discontinued, look at the miata scene, they have 3 maybe 4 very good brands to choose from. it's easy to just go grab and forget. all proven. all good. all reliable. and all get plenty of funding (less to choose from = more people buying what's actually available = company longevity)

@@motoringmatt i'm actually curious why people aren't questioning the weight balance with a k-swap motor more. in my eyes one of the best mr-s setups is the spirit mr-s and in a video by the user touge time you can see the shop owner talk about why his mr2 has a 2zz and not a k. to me the biggest plus of the k swap is the reliability, but in my eyes 2zz is better suited for the mr-s

Well, at first I think you shouldn't compare 2ZZ and K24, even K20 - competition to 2ZZ is B18 from Integra DC2. Even this riny 0,2 liter makes a huge difference in N/A engine, also K-series are couple of years newer. But still B18 is better than 2ZZ, but just not that much. Secodnly, 2ZZ's can whitstand great power, their first problem is not engine, but a gearbox in which 3rd gear fails around 300 horsepower mark. In factory the had maximum output of almost 300 horsepower in Lotus cars, where internals were just the same as VII gen Celica. Maybe they fail above this range, but in such lightweight car I see no point in more than 280 hp at wheels. Don't mind, I like Honda engines, B18, K20 and F20 are so fantastic, but 2ZZ's are also great. In my opinion stick with Toyota engines in Toyota cars and Honda engine in Honda cars... and what you mentioned about people swapping K20 and K24 to RX-7, also not a big fan of that - kinda hate it to be honest. And for me this tiny japanese cars are all about high rpm, not high torque, so if I had to Honda engine swap MR2 it would be K20, not K24. Also not a big fan of new Type-R Civic's that are turbocharger from factory... it's not the way. Just my opinion! :)

Apart from the aftermarket why would you say the B series over the 2ZZ? They both make around 100hp/liter but the 2ZZ is lighter and has a slightly better head (barely). Is it because of the MMC?

He can run 9.01 quarter mile times you can also make it four wheel drive if you want to. There are way more k motors available than the 2zz motors, like in the millions of car sold world wide.
