I find it’s easier to absorb when you enjoy what you’re doing. Personally, with my studying if it gets too much like work it puts me off. I listen to music all the time, read occasionally, but most of my learning is listening. A tip I recommend for people is if you don’t feel like studying at least go over a part of your day in your desired language and it will keep it fresh.

Great video! Also, Florida. With the Cuban population, etc. it's mandatory. Also, Spanish is one of the easiest language for English speakers to learn, compared to German, Russian, French, etc.

Sage advice Mike. Thank you. I'm retired. I started to study Spanish to surprise my niece who'd taken it as a minor in college. That was six months ago. My progress is slow (I'm no where near conversational yet) but I see incremental improvements in my comprehension. For example, when I watch a Spanish Netflix series, I'm able to follow the dialogue - subtitles help - a bit faster each time. Every time I do an exercise, I make plenty of mistakes, but I also have plenty of spare time on my hands so making mistakes doesn't discourage me. My attitude is that a brick by brick approach is a slow, but steady way to build the house. It will take time, but the house will be built. Keep up the good work.

For me personally, ever since I started acquiring Spanish, the love for the language started to snowball really fast. There hasn't been a single day when I'm like I don't feel like studying or learning new stuff, there's little to no resistance. I shouldn't even call it studying, because it doesn't feel like a study when I enjoy it so much. Momentum is a really powerful tool once you know how to take full advantage of it.

After 26 years on and off learning Spanish, I found motivation to quit. Main reason, I really cannot find connection to the culture and people. Also important, the speed that natives speak makes it impossible to understand, produces unnecessary stress and removes enjoyment from speaking the language. Lastly, I have lost motivation to visit any Spanish speaking country.

It doesn't only happen with Spanish, French also, your family will not understand why are you learning that language. Great work! I agree. I love Spanish, but sometimes I feel like my progression has hit a wall or is at least slowing down. I continue to study, but often ask myself when will I be at a much better level. I have been studying for 1 year and 7 months. I can’t understand the lyrics to a lot of songs and there are certain topics that I can’t understand in conversation, even though I’m conversational. I know I’ve come a very long way. I either listen, read or speak for a combination of at least 2 or 3 hours a day and have been for over a year. I always thought that I would be near native at this time when I first started. Now I see that this is a very long long journey. I will continue though because I have made Spanish speaking friends.

Just like Mike said, it is a long process. Try to expose yourself to more of the language by reading books, reading the news and talking to several natives. Even then it still takes time because sometimes it takes us three to four times hearing the same phrase for it to become part of you. Just trust that every time you expose yourself, you learn.

Cool stuff, but I barely ever leave my house and almost never talk to any people. I don't listen to music like most people, either. I just want to become a translator and interpreter. Besides, I am talented at learning languages. I hope that maintains enough of my motivation.
