I am a garlic grower in south central MN and have grown up to 35,000 garlic in a season. And one thing that we had happen across most of the country is we had a very dry winter and a little bug called a leaf hopper came up really early. And since garlic can handle a decent amount of cold Garlic was about 8-10 inch. tall but it was too cold for anything else to grow so they only had garlic to eat on which they normally leave alone. Well leaf hoppers carry a virus called Yellow Aster Virus. Well that year the garlic looked great until about a week b4 the hardneck garlics started putting out scapes and most if not all of the leaves started turning yellow. What was happening is the Yellow Aster Virus causes clogging to happen in the garlics vascular system and shows in the green of the garlic plant by turning it yellow. The bulb is also affected, not only by the size it grows to to some extent. People that can smell normally and smell it when they smell the bulb and the clove wrappers are a weird dark red with a little yellowish tint. U can eat the cloves no problem. But the other thing that happens is effected bulbs do not store half as long as they normally would. And if u think u have some good garlic cause the cloves look normal well that is another thing is some of the infected plant will look normal and might be normal. But if its got the virus in it it will kill those garlic plants that year. Its a two year cycle to clear the virus out of any planting stock u have

Sorry about your problems with the leaf hopper. Here in Iowa Zone 5a, I had my first run-in with the leaf hopper last year when they crippled the tomato plants along the fence row and at either end of my garden row. I ended up pulling up the plants. Lesson learned: plant more than you need. Any suggestions on how to prevent or get rid of this pest?

I had grown garlic for over 30 years, and I never had any problems. Then, about 5 years ago, I noticed one variety of my garlic, was yellowing from the top down and fairly quickly. I pulled those garlics and found they were very easy to pull, and I realized that it was because there were very few roots and they were black. The garlic had very mushy outer skin, and I noticed some sort of very thin milipeed type light colored creature on all of those bulbs. The bulbs were small. The only thing that I did differently was to buy packaged steer manure. Previously, I always bought a truck full of composted cow manure. I forgot to mention that my other varieties, Red German and Roman were not affected that year. However, the following year, I lost all of my garlic with the same symptoms. I didn't grow garlic for a few years. Then a friend gave me some garlic starts that were from the garlic that I had given her a few years before my garlic woes. She has not incountered any of my problems. Those same milipeed type creatures showed up on my ripe strawberries. Any strawberry touching the ground had at least 20 or more of those creatures in a tangled mass eating my strawberries. I had also put bagged manure in the soil. I'm guessing that it is the based manure. Also, those creatures really stink. Does anyone out there have any answers? I'm stumped!

Should my garlic flower before it’s ready to harvest?

I heard about roots taking energy giving to the leaves and taking energy from the leaves and put that into the roots depending on conditions a plant might look like it's not growing however it'll be going crazy underground and vise versa and can be manipulated to do things however you want by replicating certain conditions

I have an onion question. I started onions from seed (not green onions, big ones) and they are up about 2-3 inches, and I can see tiny bulbs. When should I plant them outside, and do I need to harden these off as well?
@njjensen76713 жыл бұрын
Harden them off and plant them when the soil is thawed. It’s a root vegetable so it does well in colder weather when other veggies do not.

@@njjensen7671 thank you! My first time with onions!
@njjensen76713 жыл бұрын
@@kelliprevich4323 no problem! My advice to you would be to mulch with straw or chips. As onions don’t like weeds and pulling the weeds can disturb the onions roots.
