The E33's didn't fail. They worked well in the service they were designed for and joined the rest of the Virginian's electric motors serving for 26 years. Most diesels of the that era were gone by then.

@Engine33Truck Жыл бұрын
@@maciekkra539 the Virginian was the only railroad that purchased the EL-C/E33 new. All 12 were built for the Virginian, which had very successfully electrified 134 miles of their mainline from Mullens, WV to Roanoke, VA because of the steep Clark’s Gap grade. The EL-C was the third generation electrics to run on that section. So the EL-C was extremely successful for the customer who initially ordered them. Their lives didn’t get shaky until sold to the New Haven after N&W bought the Virginian and disbanded the electric program.

The E33s are like the British Rail class 71s. They were designed for a niche application which they did very successfully. Neither belong in this video. Plenty of examples of this, for example Gresley's steam K4s specifically for the steeply graded West Highland Line. Only 6 of them, but successful on that specific route.

ah the s1, that was well known around these parts of north indiana, crestline to fort wayne to chicago, the s1 was not just built by the altoona shops, all the the big three contributed to her, she was known as the big engine, but soo big it could only be used on that line due to the straight runs, it could not take sharp turns, it is a shame it was not saved, some say it had 7000 hp output, but I have ran into differant figures, she had a huge boiler though, and could boil the water you bet, there was also the s2 it was a steam direct drive turbine, worked real good over 30mph but had to run the blower hard at slow speeds cuz of its appatite for steam was huge, and the low pressure and temprature changes the firebox got did a number on the staybolts and sheets.

Although it makes sense to judge the EL-C by its low production numbers compared to diesels, it ignores that in North America most electric locomotives were built and sold for specific applications as opposed to being broadly generic as the diesel locomotive (this is even seen with electrification by N&W and VGN as both were around the same time and used side rod/jack shaft units yet each was built specifically for them in that application similar to steam engines being built for a specific section of railroad). This is even true with the PRR as most of their electrics were only ever used or seen on their lines as well as those on subsequent PC and Conrail such as the E-44 and GG-1 of which the former was based off the EL-C built for the VGN a few years prior (E-50C had even fewer units built than the E-44 but was followed by the E-60C a few years earlier which was used as the base for the E-60CP) In short, it was never meant to be mass marketed like diesels as they were being specifically built for the VGN as seen by the history of electric locomotives built before where some designs were similar or even constructed around the same time yet were still different

The thing about the SR Class71 you don't mention is that it was designed as a dual power pick-up locomotive. Its main source of power was the standard SR 750V DC Third Rail which covered roughly 90% of of the Eastern Section of Southern Region and was used to haul prestigious trains like the "Night Ferry" and the "Golden Arrow" from London Victoria to Dover Marine, where the coaches were put aboard a boat and thence sailed to Dieppe and thence hauled by an SNCF locomotive to Paris . The Class71 could use a pantograph for overhead supply at 650V DC in sidings and marshalling yards. This was done for safety purposes as an exposed outside third rail was even when they were built seen as a safety hazard. I, personally, don't think they can be classed as a failure as in the 60s and 70s i would see them working the North Kent line with continental freight to and from Dover, as well as passenger trains out of Victoria and Charing Cross when the EMUs were not available.

The E60s were originally equipped with steam generators hence the CP prefix because of Amtrak’s inherited passenger cars which where steam heated and they got a weight increase when they added HEP equipment in the E60CH. The SDP40F was failure because of being based of SD40-2 for the locomotive frame and you count in factors like heavier loading, use of freight locomotive trucks and constant derailments caused by rough rail conditions of 1970s. Amtrak gave a majority of the units to the Santa Fe where they regeared to freight usage.

Many of Amtrak's E60's were sold off to either the Black Mesa and Lake Powell or Ferrocarilles Nacionales de Mexico, which had an electrified main line between Mexico, D.F. (what we called "Mexico City") and Puebla, Mexico (to help alleviate air pollution in Mexico City). I saw them running in Mexico in 1997. In a stunningly bad move, NdeM decided to de-electrify the Puebla line later...😢 Fun fact: there were two versions of the passenger E60: the E60CP (which had a boiler for older steam heated passenger cars) and the E60CH, which had a head end power generator for the newer electrically heated and cooled cars, like the Amfleet coaches.

I disagree with the assessment of the EL-C. The Virginian conducted one of the largest scale electrifications of a freight railroad in US history because of a major grade at Clark’s Gap, WV. They had previously tried large Mallet locomotives on the Mullens to Roanoke portion (which includes Clark’s Gap) - the class AE 2-10-10-2 and the XA 2-8-8-8-4 triplex to name a few - and they proved inefficient. The electrification proved a resounding success with the gargantuan “box cabs” EL-3A (some of the largest and most powerful locomotives of any type ever built) working well, with them also purchasing the 4 massive EL-2Bs. They further supplemented their electric fleet with the 12 EL-C units, being the only railroad to purchase them new (the name designation follows VGN’s system of designating their locomotives). After VGN was bought by N&W - who had no desire to continue the electric program - the EL-Cs were sold to the cash strapped New Haven who needed to replace their own 1910s model box cabs. They designated them the E-33.

One of them set a speed record for diesel-electric locomotives (not Guinness record) in 1993, reach the speed for 271 kilometers per hour (168 miles per hour). But they were very expensive and passenger traffic fell with collapse of USSR. TEP80 0002, which one set a speed record, is staying at the museum in Saint Petersburg.

Speaking of revolutionary failures, according to a great source about the "Leader": "One thing that is certain is that everyone has a view, be it favourable or unfavourable, on this class that, at best, can only be labelled as a brave experiment in pushing forward the case for steam during its dying years." You know what, Mr. Bulleid eventually lost interest in the project because he felt that British Rail wont approve such a revolutionary engine, if you can call it. But Mr. Riddles, BR's Chief Mechanical Engineer, persuaded him to stay just to finish his project because he (Bulleid) is the only man for the job.
