Actually, the dog is probably responding to the owner's nervousness and focus on the area. I've been able to get my dog to do that (messing around with her) by acting scared and saying to her "what's that?!" in a shocked voice. They are very sensitive to their owner's energy and behaviour. Even now, my cat will react and run to my apartment door if I get startled by hearing something in the hallway.

For example, my ex had these 2 cats, and they'd be in her room on the first floor.which is surrounded by a fence. It'd be dark outside and the blinds were shut but whenever her neighbor passed by the side of their house to get to the car, the cats would be able to detect or sense them and we'd have no idea what they are responding to until we heard the neighbor's car turn on a minute or so later.

I remember years back when me and my brother were driving home in the dark after being at a friend's house, he saw a little girl skipping along the road. She didn't seem normal to him cause she was skipping, yeah not just walking but SKIPPING without a care in the world, along the white line of the road right next to traffic, and if I remember correctly it was a cold night and she was not dressed the way you would be in the cold (I think he said she also seemed unaffected by the cold). I didn't see her because I wasn't looking out the window (bro was driving) and we don't have a dash cam, I believe him though as I have no reason to not believe my own brother. To this day it's still a mystery. Edit: I did at first think I was the one driving so my comment originally said that, I spoke to my bro and he reminded me how it actually was.

I saw something in the reflection in the living room mirror (for a split second) & at that same moment...my dog, who was right there sleeping...looks up, staring at where I saw it & starts growling.
