I’m trying to get to where you are. I’m in UT, not an amazing market. But I’ve done a professional Volleyball tournament and shot the 2 biggest JiuJitsu tournaments in the world. But yet still so far away. I’m so grateful I found your channel.

Love it! That's the way to get started. Don't feel like you have to have big-scale events only to make your portfolio. There are amazing stories to be told and pictures to be made right in your backyard. Keep goin!

I like that you emphasize the fact how IMPORTANT it is to actually go out and shoot. When I used to study fine art it was the exact same mantra, same as for music. People nowadays,I think ,expect a right formula to these careers when in the end it really is about just practicing your craft. My teachers used to make us draw at least 100 sketches a day if not more, and that has helped me out immensely because it teaches you the discipline you need to be good at these types of crafts.

I am considering launching a sports photography business and/or pursuing sports photography job opportunities. Just so I'm clear, you are still recommending creating a portfolio with a variety of work (i.e. candids, landscape, events, etc.), not just my best sports photography photos? Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

thanks for these useful tips. A question about captioning your portfolio? is it as important? i am returning to sports after 15 year break and worried that my old portfolio will date my work.

Hey Billie, fellow Bostonian here (south shore) I have 2 D4's and recently purchased a D500, because all the reviews said it was killer at high ISO. I know in a previous video you had a D500, I shot once with it at a poorly lit gym, at ISO 6400 and found that the grain was much worse than my D4 at the same settings in the same gym. Do you think this is the case, and I should stick to the D4's. Eventually I will upgrade to the D5 but looking to get one more piece of glass (120-300 2.8) before I upgrade the body. Thanks for the videos man, really appreciate it. I would love to share a gallery with you that I shot a couple years back when Maverick, a sick child from Wisconsin came to meet David Ortiz. I was the only photographer with them for almost the entire day. Would love to get your thoughts if you ever have the time.

Hey Rich. Yes, I've had the same experience with the D500! The grain is pretty bad on that camera - I would much prefer the D5 if you have it. I think if you could stick with the D4, I would go in on the lens (120-300 looks sweet). The D4 will hold up just great still! And cool you shot that moment. I have likely already seen your images!

Do you see any harm in purchasing a 70-200 Tamron lens (I shoot with Canon) as a way to save money? I primarily focus on sports where autofocus is concern, but am having trouble affording some of the top lens options.
@billieweiss76814 жыл бұрын
Absolutely no harm! It is a great option at a more manageable price point. The main thing you'll want to look at is the f/stop of the lens, so if it goes down to 2.8 or more toward f/4 or 5.6. The lower the number, the better it will perform in low light situations. Good luck!
@RW82634 жыл бұрын
I wrote this before I got to #4...but still wondering if you've ever used a Tamron lens and seen any issues with its slower Autofocus?
@billieweiss76814 жыл бұрын
@@RW8263 I haven't used it personally but I've heard good things. For most sports scenarios, I think it will work just fine!

Notice you use the Nikon D5, whats your thoughts on this camera? I am tossing between the D4s or the D5
@billieweiss76814 жыл бұрын
I love the D5. It's a beast! The main difference to me between the D4s and the D5 is the video capability. The D5 has the 4K video capability. If video isn't a worry and you're just concerned about stills, the D4s will hold up just beautifully!
