For my breeder colony I have a seedling heat mat inside the tub. It really only gets to maybe 90F and I have it taped to one side. It seems to give them just enough heat as my colony has been producing like crazy starting about 6 weeks after I added it. It is a great cheap option for people just getting started. I am doing pretty much everything else you suggested with lots of luck. I do have a dish of water crystals for them in one corner that they seem to enjoy. I also have buffalo beetles in with them as a clean up crew. They are doing great in those conditions as well. :)
@deklanmiller1014 жыл бұрын
Erin Brannan-O'Neal I just got a clean up crew today, do they need substrate?? Or can I just put them in with nothing?? Thank you!
@erinbrannan-oneal41974 жыл бұрын
@@deklanmiller101 what type of clean up crew? If they are buffalo beetles, they do fine with no substrate, they will mostly live in the frass at the bottom and sometimes venture onto the egg crates. If you want to do something more like sprintails/isopods, they would need substrate and more humidity than the dubias need. The buffalo beetles are similar to mealworms so keeping carrots (or something similar) in there for moisture at all times is ideal.

I took my grandson's anole he won last July and she has barely eaten since until we got a baby bearded dragon that can't have mealworms yet, barely ate the pinhead crickets. I ordered some dubias at different sizes for both. Both love the dubias and I added a male anole and he loves them too. She will go eat his if I put them down in front of him, so much for the males being so dominate...lol I bet they loved the dubias. We just went through 400 small dubias in 6 days, going to try to breed them as the baby bearded will eat about 50 a day of the small ones. She is starting to ignore that size so many less of bigger ones. They are suppose to be the best insect to feed regularly.

I was surprised how long it took them to breed. I thought we’d get a batch in two or three weeks but now that I’ve had them for four months there’s a lot of nymphs and smalls.

I keep roach chow, put lots of green and fruit and veggies. But I also fold up a decent length of paper towel and soak it in water, and put that in the bin too. Even with fruit and veggies in with them, I always find lots of baby's huddling under the wet paper towel. The adults, normally just sit on top and soak it in.. I've been breeding now over a year, and just 2 days ago lost my first female breeder. Due to old age, they were large not quite adult when I gottem. I started with 30 females, and had a 1 to 4 ratio. I now have thousands. I also have baby black tiger madagascar hissing cockroaches finally!! lol u were right there a pain to keep contained and a b**** to catch when loose lmao..

Hello mate, I’m really grateful for all the sound advice from all your videos. Just a quick question, will you need to use a thermostat with that heating mat for the Dubia roaches?
@NORTHERNEXOTICS4 жыл бұрын
I do. I set it at 90°f . Some people don't use one because the roaches can climb the egg creat to get away from the heat

Hey Richard I started my colony about 6 weeks ago with 10 females and 3 males and I haven’t had any babies yet?? They are on a heat mat and thermostat they have plenty of food (your recipe) and I use carrots and bug balls as moisture! Been following your vids so I do t know why there are not breeding! Any ideas??

Is there to much space as in can the males find the females? The issue here is are they breeding? Are the females re absorbing the eggs . Do you know how long the females have been in there adult stages? Also is it really dark inside the enclosure or dark areas. Have a look at the females to see if they have fat abdamines . If they have then they are pregnant

@NORTHERNEXOTICS4 жыл бұрын
Those nasty things are the egg sacs. The roach thermoregulate the sac by poking it in and out of the butts . Won't be long until you have a explosion of babies. Good luck

okay.. first off. I love your videos and enjoy see what the hell you got going on! Now to my question. You have mentioned 1 to 5 ratio but i have also been told 1 to 3 what are the pros and cons between the 2. I would love to see a verse video on this. but until then i will look forward to your option on this. Thanks in advance!
@NORTHERNEXOTICS4 жыл бұрын
In a big colony 1 to 3 can wonk because if a male dies then there is still enough of a good ratio. In a home setup 1 to 5 is perfect for the health and safety of the animals xxx

@bootleg15142 жыл бұрын
My ratio is way off. Unfortunately I have 7 males and 5 females. None of my spiders are big enough to eat the males and I can't bring myself to just kill a few. I did however order 100 large nymphs. Hopefully I can get my ratio back to a 1-5 or 1-3. I might need to get a lizard to help me maintain my population.

Have you tried pre-killing the males/cutting them up for the smaller T's? They might scavenge and an adult male dubia feeds 4 of my slings

I really liked you until this video. Your first tip tells me that you do not view animals with as much love and respect as I once believed you did. Any creature that actually spends time caring for her young babies, should be left alone with those babies and allowed to care for them. You said they will go off alone and sulk, when her babies are taken from her... sounds like emotions to me
