"If you face an attacker (with a knife/weapon) just run away as you won't be able to disable them". Biggest bs ever. Most people wear backs, purses, jackets, whatever. Women often unsuitable shoes. And even if they did not, your attacker is probably much better prepared for running than you in most situations. You have to open doors, manage staircases, etc. Honestly, if it's a mugger.. Just give him the fuck he wants. Won't be as important as your life.

"Better be judged by 12 then carried by 6" either from people who carry guns and have no idea how to even get them out in time or people believing in other supposedly deadly self defense gadgets or knifes. Especially dumb if you carry that shit in your backpack or purse. As if you would get your friggin knife/kubotan/gun out of your purse before your mugger bitchslaps you three times with his knife.

The number 1 myth isn't entirely wrong in most places of the world. Most bag grab is crime by chance. The criminals do that, don't usually want to grab the person. They want to quickly grab your bag and quick money. You put your bag in a "not easy to grab" position, they will look someone else.

It's so true, this is my standard bag holding position. But if you are alone at night nothing that impedes movement is a good idea. I suffered a robbery attempt at night once while I was with a friend holding at my arm. I had my hands in my pockets, because of the cold, and a crossed bag stripe at my chest. He tryied to grab and pull the bag, but one of my arms were in the middle. He got mad and thrust something pointy at my belly. My friend panicked and got mad too and attack him with her umbrella. He backed off and I never knew what the pointy thing was (too dark to identify), but it didn't cut my coat or me.

After he ran off I went home and laid on the couch with my balls in pain for a while. I was only 12 and no I didnt know how to properly fight and yes I know rage is bad for a fight and does not make u invincible. I hate when people think that there rage will win them fights. It's the illusion of safety. yeah but that illusion disappears the first time a situation like that arises. its like with these wannabe gangsters who think they're really tough. most of them haven't been in a real fight and dont realise how badly they'd get battered. a lot of people who do martial arts are ones that experienced a hostile situation whilst young, just look at GSP for example.

Born in raised NYC here. I was riding the subway to work. I should probably mention that I’m less than 5ft tall. Also, I’ve ridden the subway hundreds of times without incident. I always carry a book when taking the train, but once I go below ground, regardless of how packed it is, I do not read. I keep my nose toward the book, but using my peripheral, make sure to scan full 360. Once, I noticed 2 men, seemingly giggling to themselves while looking my way and getting closer. I simply looked up from my book, looked them straight in their eyes, and slid my folding knife out of my pocket, cupping it in my hand. I made sure they knew I saw them, and that I was ready to stab. The train came, I got on, they did not. We smiled pleasantly at each other as the train took me away. Be vigilant.

@The Scatman the cops are restricted by the rules that they arent allowed to actually hurt the guy for real while performing their task. The criminal isnt held back by that rule. It is much easier to night stick the guy unconscious then drag him into the cell, any single cop can do that--and lose his job, get felony assault charges thrown against him, and be sued for violation of civil rights. So they have to try to get him into a submission hold, drag him through a door, and then release him safely without any bruises he can sue over, all while the criminal is trying to break cops arms, kick them in the balls, hammer punch cop skulls, grabbing door frame, etc. That is much harder.

As someone that has taken and taught martial arts for almost 35 years, my most annoying headache are the women over 40 that don't want to put the time in to get physically and mentally conditioned to be able to defend themselves against a physical attack. I always get "well can't you just give a self defense class" or "I need something now", or "Can't I just rake the eyes and go for the groin?" They just can't get it through their heads that it takes years of hard work of going to class and testing what they learn against actual people. Oh, and one thing I get from both male and females over 40 is "do we really need to make physical contact?" It's not that they are female. I've seen so many young ladies that train all the time and take what they do seriously. It's the middle aged and senior citizens that are delusional, and balk when they are told it takes years to get good. And talking to them is like talking to a wall.

The I will kick a guy in the balls . I hear that one, the most. I like to point out . That from the time a boy is aware of the pain from a groin strike . He is training to avoid being hit in the groin. Most guys are very proficient at guarding their groin. I also point out . That a groin strike doesn't immediately end a fight . I find women who have taken a self defense seminar are way over confident that the one thing they remember from their class is the end all to any violent confrontation . Too many women believe the crap they see in movies . Where the 4 foot 8 . 90 pound woman is kicking the crap out of linebacker size men .

I turned round, and went to kick him in the gut. He tried to evade the kick, and my foot landed full force in his testicles. He howls in pain, then about 2 seconds in the howl turns to rage, and I noped the fuck out. Bear in mind we're teenagers, I'm 2 and a half years older than him, and he's never taken me in a fight without using improvised weapons. My parents thought it was hilarious.

way too many guys think they're tough shit trying to pick a fight, not realizing just how much trouble a fight is, I've been in a lot of fights in school due to being bullied, I was never scared of them, but that was because we were kids, no further trouble after it's handled in school, not that much force, but as you get older you become aware that a fight as an adult could be a murder charge if things go slightly wrong

The issue is most men are afraid to fight another man. If most men don’t like fighting other men, how can a woman, that’s typically weaker then the average man, go out fighting someone who IS READY FOR A FIGHT?!?!

You are right, but this video is mostly for women for a reason.... First of all, these 5 myths are lady problems... never seen a guy worried about his bag or figuring ways out to kick another dude in the balls. Secondly, most attack and mugging victims are women and most attackers are men.... so yeah, that's already a bad start for women... Men also get into fights with other men of course, but not usually while being mugged or over a shoulder bag or something. More like in a bar fight...ect. So yeah, the situations this video talks about are more for women to pay attention to. Thirdly, at least statistically, women has to take self defense much more seriously.... here is an example: You can be the most badass average sized woman on the planet, martial arts expert...ect. still, your 130 pounds will be no match to about 80 percent of the grown men in the world.... on the other hand, I'm an average guy, 6 feet tall, 180 pounds, athletic, well built.... not a martial arts expert, did about 5-6 months of hobby boxing my whole life, that's it, nothing special. But I can guarantee you, that even on my worse day I can mop the floor with about 50 percent of the grown men on this planet and about 99.9 percent of the grown women. So yeah... men are in general much safer, than women. Women in general are smaller and weaker, that's not an insult, that's a fact. And if women take that seriously and do something about it, instead of just trying to go for the balls or poke at attackers with a key, then perhaps one day that can save their lives.... that's the message of the video, to women. Not sexist, not biased, just advice based on facts.

Thank you for this! I have been a martial artist for over 20 years and I took about 5 years off due to injury. I decided to get back into "something" and tried a Krav Maga class. I went to 2 classes and never went back. The "instructor" was teaching some women some really terrible techniques that would NEVER work in the real world! I stayed till after class and addressed it with "instructor"! He tells me that they are " Time tested techniques, and if they tried them on me full force I would go down!" The biggest lady in the class was 5'9" and 155lbs. I am 6'2' 265lbs! So I asked him to demonstrate at his 75% on me. He is 6'0 and 185lbs. It didn't go too well for him and I didn't go down. It makes me sad that there are so many people teaching bad techniques and even worse, giving these ladies a false sense of confidence that will end up getting them hurt really bad. Please keep doing things like this to show the truth.

Thank you so much for this video!! Hot damn it was over due!! I am a woman, and a trained [caged] fighter and have a longer solid background as a boxer [I started out as a boxer]. And even I always tell people, that I always do everything possible to avoid a street fight. And that if I was attacked randomly on the street from out of no where I would probably lose. WHY? Because i would be relaxed, not paying attention, and the attack would more than likely be some stupid sucker punch from behind or with a blunt object. Fighting in a controlled environment vs "the street" are two completely different worlds apart. And this is coming from a lady who activity spars weekly [with men twice my size] and get's in the ring/cage.

Also movies and tv shows help with spreading bullshit too. My couch potato's grandmother and aunt love, Lifetime Network movies. The movies always end with some 90lb soaking wet zero experience in fighting/combat/survival woman who is already heavily beat up, taking on some 220lb solid either abusive or serial killer man that loves violence. Taking him down with some, "would never work in real life" move(s) and winning. So now they all think that they can do the same thing too.

This is an often overlooked aspect; a lot of people who claim there's a huge difference between street fighting and cage fighting act like a street right is just MMS plus a few moves like groin strikes etc. Most likely, a "street fight" is really someone being assaulted because the attacker has some (at least perceived) advantage, like size, surprise, weapons, etc.

Justanother fancy screenname I'm not really a fighter, I just take MMA classes and compete in BJJ. I have a mother and sister who are the same way, they think they can take anyone on. One day I told my sister to just spar a round with me, I liter her up like a Christmas tree, and she still thinks she can take on men. I gotta wonder, how does she think that if a 5'2 17 year old can light her up, that she has any chance against a 6'0 man?

@@ficedulamortis6434 I hear yea. Yup, it blows my mind too! I spar two to three times a week. With guys that are three times my size. We have 11 pro fighters in my gym. And I still have to work my ass off to make sure that I don't catch one "on the chin", when I am sparing with the big heavy weights 220lb or anyone over 180lb+. So for women who are fat, out of shape, never been in a ring before or know how to carry themselves and stay clam in the face of violence, think that they can "take on someone three times their size, I'm always like LOL YEA OKAY BECKY!!! Being on the phone with someone can be a helpful thing. Trying to call for help while being attacked is not going to happen. If you know your in a sketch situation you can get on the phone and provide your location and a running commentary on whats going on around you. You can give, at a minimum, a partial description of any person who comes close to you or is around you. You can update your location and status in real time. If something does go down, the person on the other end can end that call and get help to your last known location much more quickly and easily. Being on the phone with someone is a possible deterrent for the bad guys too bc they know the above facts are not in their favor. It's not fool proof but it's better than being all alone fighting for your life and nobody knows where you are. Situation information is critical. Cops rely on that fact every day.

I watched self defense videos before. But when I actually started training jiu jitsu, boxing and Muay Thai it’s so so different. There are so many intricacies in fighting and different techniques that you can not learn by just watching videos. For instance most people think that if they punch someone it will hurt. Not really, you’ve gotta have a certain motion and body position, foot work, calculation, balance, force, to even get a good punch in. And even with all that you might miss. So you gotta be prepared for everything and polish the skills.

To add to “I’ll just kick them in the balls” - kicking an attacking Male in the balls will not disable them. I have been smashed in the balls multiple times in fights and it’s never stopped me. Yeah it hurts, sure. But in the middle of a dangerous encounter you just soak that pain up and keep going. If a man is looking to really harm you he’s not going to stop by being nut shot. And that’s presuming you actually do hit them well.

Yes but in a life or death situation no ones’s thinking about what’s “dirty” and what’s not. For example, hair pulling is a bratty, low move but if another girl attacked me I wouldn’t hesitate to pull her off of me by her hair (this is coming from someone who’s trained Muay Thai and bjj for a few years. I’m not a pro by ANY means whatsoever but I know basic technique). Same with scratching. No matter how good my technique becomes, I won’t be able to out muscle a man. If I have a chance to dig my sharp nails into his eyes or knee him (not a weak foot kick) in the nuts I’m taking it so I can run.

I know one woman who is definitely one of those who think they can do anything and everything. She's had that encounter with a purse-snatcher, and instead of going the safe route she struggled with the guy until he gave up and ran off. She refuses help offered because she assumes people offer to help her just because she's a woman, and for some reason she believes she could win a fight against anyone. The truth is she's short, overweight, out of shape, and doesn't know the first thing when it comes to fighting. I could just push her over with one arm, and I'm not a huge dude. I've always been a bit worried about her safety mainly because she over-estimates her own capabilities and gives off a super cocky and arrogant air... About the key-thing, putting them in between your fingers is absolutely insane and going to harm you more. Furthermore, having the keys in your hand in the normal way, ready to open a door, is also a much more effective way to use them as a weapon. Especially if you have a whole key-ring, it's almost like a small knife with the other keys resting in your palm and the key of choice (lol) protruding forward.

As a martial artist and a sports/med massage therapist my advice would be to wear your purse the first way, over both neck and shoulder. Almost every woman I work on has a repetitive strain injury from doing the one shoulder carry and believe me, a repetitive strain injury is much more common than purse snatchings. Beside there are some wicked and easy Silat sarong chokes from the over neck and shoulder position. It's kind of like how in BJJ you'll sometimes use your own Gi to choke an opponent. Just spend an hour modifying the Gi chokes you know and you'll come to realize the potential of the over neck and shoulder way.

One of the best pieces of advise I got on self defense was you don't know what's going to transfer from your training until you actually do have to defend yourself. Scary fact, but I discovered it was true when I actually was attacked. Just the habit of keeping track of where two guys were as one came at me could have been the one thing that saved me. I didn't run because I was a couple doors away from my house, and I would have had to pull out my keys and open the door to get in, which could have left my back exposed long enough to take some hits. That didn't even occur to me until I was in the altercation. It was quite the learning experience, playing it over and over in my head for years now

Great video, as usual. Regarding wearing the handbag strap (and without advocating one approach or the other), my understanding of the rationale for wearing it across the body was the supposition that a bag snatcher would notice this, realise that it would not be an easy grab and thus target someone else. I have never understood it to be a defensive tactic in the sense of "If he grabs my bag I can hold on to it and fight him off" (which, I agree, would not be worth the contents of the bag).
@Torthrodhel
@Torthrodhel 4 жыл бұрын
I do some of these. Here are why: 1] I carry my handbag over my shoulder in that way so I won't drop it. Nothing to do with self defense. I guess I have slopey shoulders? But either way it's not so someone else doesn't steal it, it's so I don't lose it myself. 2] I have done this just for reassurance, but I am aware it's just a mental bolster. I never imagined I would poke someone's eye with the keys, anyway. Just imagined if it did come down to it someone would see I'm holding them like that, and them thinking "oh shit, she's prepared" could cause some hesitation. That's the self-defence application. It's no use once the fight's started, I know that. I'd probably drop the keys when that happens. 3] Back when I used to smoke I used to occupy myself with some cigarettes walking through a dodgy area or at a dodgy time. Nowadays being on your phone can be a valid substitute for the same thing. I don't imagine anyone is coming to my rescue just because I'm on the phone. But someone looking to cause some mischief's looking around for a target and they see one person with their attention fully immersed in something else, and another person with their attention free to be grabbed, and who are they gonna pick? The one who isn't doing anything. That's why I feel safer doing something when it feels sketchy. You're a little bit less likely to be the target, and that does count for something. Also it's just plain mentally reassuring to be talking to someone you know, no matter whether or not it makes you actually safer. I'm not a motorist, though. Disability means I can't be one. So it could be different for motorists, as you describe. I'll never have that option. I don't have the internet on my phone though. One reason is my sensory issues mean I can't handle touchscreens, so I'm stuck with 2010 models. The other is I see what it does to people and I actually don't want to have it on my phone. 4] Ha, yeah that one is dumb though. I don't go for the groin, it's a too often too well defended, too out of sight target, for me who is no expert at landing such kicks. And not really much of a kicker in general. 5] Yep and this one's dumb too! But I just wanted to say those things about the first three.

I'm incredibly confused by your third point. Assailants generally target people who are distracted and doing something other than looking around. Being occupied on your phone or with another distraction makes you an EASIER target. Where did you get the idea that it's the reverse?
@Torthrodhel
@Torthrodhel 4 жыл бұрын
@@ItsAsparageese I guess assailants vary from one area to another, then. A large group of people out to cause trouble's gonna have an easy time against an individual either way, I guess. I probably got the idea from seeing people react to eye contact, stuff like that. If you blend in they don't notice you and don't care. If they notice you noticing them, they take it as some kind of personal affront or something. Something along the lines of "what do you think you're looking at". That's been my experience, anyway.

Took Karate for about a year that included lot of moves to break free from various holds. Tried them out on my husband and told him to actually resist. None of them worked, hes a moderately strong guy but not a crazy gym buff or anything. I think the important thing is that you have to hurt or distract them somehow. Just trying to break out of holds does not seem to work on its own unless you are stronger than the person fighting you.

I was the smallest regular attendant of my jiu jitsu class. I took about 10 months of jujitsu classes doing between 4 and 9 classes per week. I was 148 lb, the instructor was 320 lb, and the largest guy in our class was 370 lb. He and I had started training around the same time, and I had tons of people ask if I really did know enough to win a fight against him. I suppose it's better to ask than to assume, but with us both training about the same time, the training pretty much canceled out, and on a really good day I could make him breathe kind of hard. Best I could do was try not to get submitted for a long period of time. Very good training, but that size and weight advantage is a bear, and the previous 6 years or so of karate that I had taken barely made a difference, and certainly was much less helpful than the months of jiu jitsu I took.

The kick them in the balls thing is way overstated in effectiveness. Even if you manage to kick someone in the balls during a fight, chances are extremely high that it will do little to slow them down. Once that adrenaline dump happens the most likely effect of you kicking a guy in the balls is that he gets really determined to bash your face in repeatedly.

It's the Dunning-Kruger Effect- when you don't know ANYTHING about something (in this case fighting) it's easy to assume it's really simple, and that the things you can quickly see and understand are all that you need to know. AND like the OTHER thing people assume they're good at (sex) fighting is very primal, and whether or not normies think about it, your ability to fight is essential to survival if you don't have the rule of law threatening to punish people for hurting you. I appreciate content like this, because I've been telling my female friends for years, "learn to fight if that's important to you, but don't make some half-measure and assume you'll be okay" because people putting out false fixits like that ARE CAUSING WOMEN TO END UP IN VULNERABLE POSITIONS WHERE THEY BELIEVE THEY'RE SAFE. The whole, "girl power, just kick his balls" thing isn't just wildly unrealistic, it's not safe at all to believe that.

Points 1-4 are good, but I am really happy that you said the 5th. Whenever I said that there were a problem with the women´s attitude on the trainings (if they showed up at all), I was called anti woman who does not support the ladies. What I hate so much when I hear that a women only course was "enpowering". I see those empowered women with a bigh mouth outside of the trainings, some of them on the women only courses, but when they come to the mixed classes, they train together. 99.9 %of the Warrior Princesses who came to the courses had done nothing, just a half ass training with a lot of chatting. Their empowerment lasts until they get a male training partner, then they prefer to quit. They need reality, not enpowering. But when you face them with it (you are not as good as you think), they just say you are not supporting them and get offended. When I had to realize in the first mixed group where I trained, that I am not as good as I think, it just motivated to train harder. Whenever I am told on the trainings that I am good, I correct them, that no, I am just not as sh.it as the 99.9% of the women just because I did not give up after the second training. In a confrontation I will just buy seconds as you said, that´s all.

There are some oversights here that I think should be taken into consideration. These are mostly in the realm of psychology with people that have little to no experience in combat scenarios whatsoever. Like you mentioned, the element of surprise plays a big role here and its hard to break out of that reflexive mold most people tend to grow up with in general, which is to protect your belongings. I guess if you live in a rough neighborhood and experience violence every other day, you might be be able to think on their feet a lot quicker but most people that have ingrained themselves into daily non confrontational lifestyle will hardly have that expereince. When a person is looking to grab a purse there is a good chance this person is going to make the attempt and keep running regardless of they are successful or not. Its very different when you are able to read the environment from a distance and ready yourself but when completely caught off guard, this is not possible. In your case, you were a cop and a member of a SWAT team, so you have been definitely conditioned to read the crowd and always be on your guard. The other is, if you are not willing to resist at all, you might be a habitual victim of the same attack as the perpetrator will now know you as an easy mark. Most people always opt to fight instinctively before taking flight because we always mentally project ourselves as a "tough" individual. If a person doesn't possess this then they would have a hard time achieving any goals in their life since they have accepted that they are incapable hence lacking any confidence in themselves in any situation that amounts to a level of competition. I would also think that the moment your legs turn to jelly is when your body is turning into flight mode but if you are still resisting, it will end badly. Its here that it is critical to be in sync with your body and follow through instead of resisting impulsive response. Which obviously cannot be achieved without training and conditioning. Knowing that you are about to walk into a fight is very different than somone running up on you from behind and punching you in the back of the head, most of the time you will get up angry and retaliate without thinking. Which can end even worse than just cradling up into a ball. Your advice is not wrong but it doesn't include regular people in an everyday physically non-confrontational situation.

These are all great insights. What is very interesting is that this is what drives many women to carry a firearm -- completely different discussion that you could probably spend hours on. But plenty of women I know do not want to go through the physical training needed for unarmed self defense (or using a pocket stick/flashlight, etc.) and spend their time training on how to back away, draw, and fire a handgun. I understand why (firearms very easily overcome any strength and size difference), but I agree with one of the philosophies espoused on your channel: It's all about having layered defensive skills and tools.
@hard2hurt
@hard2hurt 4 жыл бұрын

What gets me is women (and men) who carry their guns in absolutely horrible places like their purse or their car. You can't draw it in a situation where you need it and if someone steals your purse you just upgraded a purse snatcher into an armed robber. Many of these same people refuse to spend range time to actually build any kind of skill and they certainly don't do drills with a live opponent for various situations.

Well, the phone-thing works, but not because you can provide any information. Rather it acts as a possible deterrent (note that I said possible) from people to attack you. Usually I type the number of the emergency services and I'm ready to dial should the need arise.

Hi Mike, step 3 actually works I think, but not because of any rational reason. The assailant is just less likely to attack you because of some psychological trickery, where if they know you're own the phone, it feels to them as if there is another person there. Granted, I haven't actually read the study.

I did Krav Maga for a while, with a focus on self defense. And what I loved about the guy who trained us was: he always said that the technique alone can't save you. He focused a lot on "simulating scary/mugging situations", and training to build explosiveness and aggression in us. Saying that in a real life situation you're going to have to be able fight harder and more aggressively than the other guy, if you want to have a better chance in surviving. Like we didn't do "choke/weak points" (like poking the eyes or hitting the throat) at all, and when I would ask them why not? They would say, because in real life it would be too hard to hit those specific "small" areas. What was kind of shocking for me was when we (as the guys) fully simulated a mugging situation on a girl in the class (like grabbing her violently from behind with a gun/knife in her face, screaming at her to get on the ground) how most of them went completely blank. Like rabbits caught in headlights. After a couple of seconds I would tone it down and remind her of the technique we just learned, and that she's got to do something now to save her life. So it's totally true, I was once in a mugging situation (with a gun) also, it is SUPER scary! If you've not been conditioned to react appropriately in that situation, don't assume you will. Any way, my 2 cents on the subject.

1) People snatching bags will rarely be willing to fight for it. Bag snatching happens in public, crowded areas where they can disappear quickly. So at that point not having it grabbed is the priority since youre not in any physical danger. If youre alone and get mugged - it makes no difference how you carry your bag. 2) Never seen that key thing. Heard that people should use keys like a flail or hammer instead.. idk how that would work tho. 3) The phone thing is intended for someone to know where you are if something happens. If you walk alone and get attacked - no one might know where you are and no one will call the cop or ambulance for you. If youre on the phone and you get attacked the other person knows youre being attacked and where exactly you are. What might happen instead is you might get your phone snatched, but the risk of assault or rape is lower because the assailant knows the other person will call the police immediately to that location. 4) When youre in a fight a weak kick in the balls is better than no kick. Or whats the alternative? Bend over and spread you cheeks? 5) Being arrogant sure doesnt help.

The two most important parts of this video. 1:14 "I'm not fighting over a bag." Bingo. Inanimate objects that the police will probably find, and that insurance will probably replace if they don't, are not worth risking your health (or even your life) for. And this goes for men too, not just women. 6:25 "We are not talking about the women defeating the man in combat, we are talking about her buying time." Again, bingo. In all reality, most women are not going to defeat a man, especially a man significantly larger than then, in a fight. Okay, maybe you can you're a champion like Ronda Rousey, but other than that, no. Instead of being taught how to win, they should be taught how to escape and reach help.

I read about a woman who was being stalked by three men in an empty parking lot at night. She pretended to be drunk so they would think they had time before they rushed her and then once she got close enough she ran for the car. She got in, slammed the door and locked it. Immediately a man's face appeared at the side window, full of rage. She drove the car forward and hit the second man, who slammed his fist on the hood, perhaps to try and scare her into stopping. She drove past him and left the men in the dust. There had been a series of rapes and murders in the area and after her escape, the attacks ceased.
