Bonus sign: you know you're a serious writer when the notes app on your phone has 1gb worth of text... 😆

I think that you forgot one other indicator: I believe that you are a serious writer if you are also a voracious reader in your down time. You can’t be a writer if you don’t read. A writer needs to develop a cultural capital that will provide the narrative with rich vocabulary, interesting phrasing and appealing ideas. Intuitive knowledge of grammar and punctuation is also a must. So, fellow writers: read on!

Isn't there also a point to be made about NOT participating in that cultural capital, which makes your way of approaching stories somewhat novel? I hear constantly that a lot of readers are tired of particular clichés, and not just in plot and characters, but also prose. Of course you do need the ability to write interesting phrasing and possess rich vocabulary in the first place, I just don't think that necessarily has to come from reading a lot of books. This can also be true in other areas, like musicians without musical education doing interesting things outside of the norm. It just requires a degree of talent and feel for the craft.

Regarding #2, my criticism of other people’s work has gone down drastically as I’ve learned more about what I didn’t know before, and judging my own flaws has skyrocketed.

Dude, you are pumping these videos out! I appreciate your efforts and I hope you find success both in your literary pursuits and your KZbin career. If you keep putting videos out at the pace you have been, I don’t know how the algorithm can ignore you.

I have some serious health problems, so instead of focusing on 1000-1700 words a day, I set a weekly goal of 5000-8000 words. This is a great video. I also write when I "don't feel like it," and have come up with some great stuff even if I'm not "feeling it." As for why I write, I cannot help it! I have these stories in me that have to come out. It's why character background creation in D&D is one of my favorite things to do.

Great list. I especially liked the last one. Not getting to write drives me nuts. I get frustrated and lightly depressed until I get to sit down and write something.

I agree. It is beneficial to produce imperfect or low quality writing, and that is great practice. It's like if someone wants to become a professional cameraman. It's probably a good idea to turn on the camera and start filming; maybe in their backyard, at the park, or at the mountains or at the beach (whichever they may live nearest to.) And if they are serious, perhaps it can be an everyday thing. It will be poor quality at first, but they can figure out better ways maybe through online videos, and/or they can discover it on their own. What is the best way to compose a scene at the beach? Or at the park? How do you deal with the glare of the sun? How do you adjust the settings on your camera to film at night and have it look good? How do you use a camera jib? Or a camera slider? Et cetera. I think similarly with writing, doing the craft of writing daily is definitely a good idea (I know my Royal Epoch sitting on the desk just behind me would concur.) Sketch out a scene with characters, dialogue, and descriptions of them and the surroundings. To take another analogy, artists who are into drawing all or at least most of them, have a sketchbook. And inside are rough construction lines, gesture drawings, unfinished pieces, line strokes flowing in every variation, et cetera. If an artist doesn't have a sketchbook full of scribbles and blotched ink, I'd be left to wonder. All in all, one must embrace and hone the skill of writing sooner or later if they wish to convey their story through that medium. Even if your mind one day had downloaded the perfect story (like the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone in it's complete and final form), maybe it was while going out for a run, or out on a hike, but you're still going to have to know how to write it down properly when you return home to your word processor. You have to be a writer. Even if you are some story wizard who is animated by the same spirit that inhabited Aristotle when he wrote Poetics, and you have master story techniques embedded in your very bones, and the talent to conjure up an epic tale in your mind's eye complete with two plot twists and a double reversal -- you still have to competently punch in the little keys with letters on them to be successful.

I feel like all my writing is stored in a bladder somewhere in my brain, if I don’t regularly get some of it out into a word processor, it just builds and builds and builds to the point where it’s distracting and I have to relieve it somehow… even if it’s just taking some quality time turning the radio off on my commute and thinking through some scene or a new idea or whatever else.

That's the compulsion, alright. But hey, if it's any consolation, at least the urge gets worse as you continue to release it more and more frequently. Really helps to 'build skill' as a writer. Just like how my prostate has continued to toughen up with age, I guess.

@7:31, running on 4 hours of sleep, about a pint into a 14.5% imperial stout-absolutely delicious, thank you for asking-channeling my Ernest Hemingway/Hunter S. Thompson disregard for well-being in favor of writing, writing, writing... Thanks for the concern, but by God, I'm powering through this novel that I'm writing, come hell or high water! Health, schmealth.

Funny how writing has increasingly been reduced to a 'craft'. It's an art form.
