I always just duct tape an extra bottle cap to the leg of my camp chair (which holds exactly one cup) and I hang my wet gear from it to dry and use the camp chair to stabilize my pillow. I can scoop with the chair seat too. lol

This video was 69% bloopers and somehow still concise and informative. I discovered most of these hacks independently this summer, and I have a suggestion for the water bottle measuring cup one: I graduate my Smart water bottles in 1/2 cup increments from bottom to top with a sharpie so I always know exactly how much I’m pouring out.
@KyleHatesHiking

In regards to the "measuring cup", I took a smart water bottle and cut it higher (~2 cups worth) then made it a part of my water filtration gear. I put my sawyer and rolled up empty water bags into the empty bottle. Bonus tip, I also put a plastic grocery bag in there as well. When I come into camp and go get water, I use the bottle as a scoop and fill the water bags. Then I put everything into the grocery bag making it all easy to carry back to camp.

Just found your channel, subscribed (already married, so no proposal necessary) and ordered the LMNT. Can't wait to try it out! My pillow hack is this: I use a sleeping bag liner that has a hood in a slightly different way. (the thermolite reactor fleece) I put it on my sleeping pad like a fitted sheet, putting the hood on the up side of the pad. Then I tuck my pillow into the hood and it stays exactly where I want it. This is my cool weather set up, when my quilt is almost enough, but that warm sleeping bag liner on the pad adds just enough extra warmth. If it's cold enough and I have to get inside the liner instead, my pillow hack doesn't work. So I'll add yours for cold weather. Thanks!

I’ve heard of putting markings on your spork/spoon as a depth gauge to measure the water in your cook pot. I always put less water in my meals than what the instructions say; i can always add more if needed, but I can’t take it out if I put too much

I’ve marked my smart water bottle itself before, but I like the spoon or separate cup idea… also, I take a tiny extra ziploc snack bag of potato flakes for the times when I add too much water.
@blakew5672

Spoon marking is a great idea. I always marked my water bottle, except I don’t cut the bottle and I just use my drinking bottles. Issue being the sharpie tends to wear off too easily. I’ve never used the recommended amount of what and not had the final result be a soupy disaster. ALWAYS add less
@TheIamyourmother
@TheIamyourmother 2 жыл бұрын
I add less water too. I'm impatient and usually want to eat while it's still a little chewy, but hate having to drink the dregs of something that's not a soup/stew.

You could always take a sharpie to your water bottle and mark off 1 cup increments. That way you don't have to carry the scoop. I found some ziplocs at the Dollar Tree with 1/4 cup markings. Perfect for making up your own backpacking meals or measuring water.

Once the socks are wet anyway, go ahead and give them a good rinse if you can. Squeeze out the excess water, then use the trekking poles...then get out your second pair of socks because the wet ones will not be dry by morning 😂 Also, I wrap duct tape and twine around small plastic containers that I'm using for food. Unwrap and use as needed.

Hack for sliding pillows and sleeping pads: those non-slip mats you use under rugs, don't know what they're called in english. They aren't multipurpose but they weigh almost nothing anyway and you don't need a huge piece. Also if you for some reason don't want your sweaty socks on the handles of your trekking poles you could set up a cord between the trekking poles.

Done thoughts on your Gear Hacks: 1 - Once that cup has been used to scoop water from a stream or horse/cow trough it is contaminated, so don’t drink from it unless it’s been boiled with the water in a pot or thoroughly cleaned for 30 minutes in a bleach or iodine solution. 2 - Be careful in areas where goats, deer, and elk are plentiful, those stinky socks will beckon the animals in and they will eat the salty sweaty fabric right off the pole like a lollipop-voice of a bad experience speaking, hahaha. 5 - Duct tape wrapped around a Bic lighter is great since shredded duct tape also works as a fire starter. But, like Flossie, I also wrap a few times on a pen and a Sharpie I carry for writing trail messages on any surface (plastic bag, paper plate, etc.) for followers. One can never have enough duct tape handy.

I am not a hiker but surely you guys carry a Bic lighter and jealously guard it. Afterall, it is essential in emergency survival situations as well as general use on the trail. Wrap your lighter with the narrow gorrila tape. Not only will it always be handy, unlikely to be lost or burried in your pack, but a small amount makes for a great firestarter with a long burn time. Perfect for small box stoves etc.

If you're an owner of a CNOC bag and you lose/break your water bottle cap, the cap on the CNOC bag is removable and can be used as a bottle cap in a pinch.

Or, get a pot with measurements, then use that to scoop water from shallow sources. I also just scratched a 1cup mark on my Titanium mug.

I’ve also been known to replace zipper pull cords with duct tape. Run a piece of cord through the pull, and wrap duct tape around the free ends. Or duct tape around trekking poles.

I dipped the handle of my Deuce #2 trowel in tool dip. ("Plasti-Dip") Because the edges of that thing are like a knife when you're digging with it when it's freezing cold and you forgot your gloves or even when it's not freezing cold... sucks. Grippy and cushioned handle. Easy.

Sunnyfuck south (we escalated !) digs the hacks, knew about the cup one, if I lose that, I've got it marked on my spoon. Another hack I use is to get a 1 gal. Ziploc bag and use it for laundry, put the skanky socks in with some water and some Bronners, shake, rinse, repeat rinse and dry. Peace and good tidings from the Conejo.

Get some foam....cut it so it's about an inch thick then cut it to the shape of your inflatable pillow. Wrap a " neck buff around pillow and slip the foam in between the pillow and buff and you now have a pillow almost like the one at home.

fair point. although that means i have to get dirty water in my pot. which might be okay since it's going to be boiling water anyways. also, the bottom of my pot is really scratched up already so i dont think i could see the markings
