One of the best pieces of advice my old martial arts teacher taught us was this, "in a real fight, there are no rules." The moment you think about things like honor, fairness, etc, is the moment you set yourself to lose. You never know what's going through you opponent's head, so it's best to assume it's the worst case scenario. However, another good thing he also taught us is this, "the best kind of fight is the one that never happens."

My Dad taught me that a different way. He simply recommended that I leave a brick out back of a bar and be the last one out the door if something started. It took a bit to understand that the real hint was that everybody fights dirty in bar room disputes and that it's a bad idea to be anything other than the last guy out the door.

DO NOT go for an eye gouge if you’re not in a dominant position and it’s not a life, or death fight. If you do, then you’ve just raised the ante in the fight and are at high risk of getting eye gouged back by somebody that’s in a dominate position, (eg full mount, etc) and much better abler to apply it. Not every fight is a life, or death situation. You have to gauge the level of seriousness and be careful about mistakenly turning something that wasn’t really that serious into something more serious, or deadly.

Number Two is the only one that contemplates getting away, which is the priority in any unwanted confrontation. You will find very few videos that tell you the absolute basics of how to engage when it’s a question of fight or flight. These guys are experts and so they can identify their targets and hit them with precision. This takes years of knowledge and practice but seems so easy on the screen. Almost all strikes are to the head and upper body and therefore also look impressive. These exercises are for the Dojo, not for street emergencies. Hitting others in the face is definitely not recommended - these days there are always those with phone cameras and that sort of evidence if the police turn up will always go against you initially - although it’s a natural instinct when we give in to our emotions instead of keeping focused on the main aim and that is to injure your opponent correctly so as to then go to the next phase which is flight. Dropping someone to the floor and then going down with them is also a no-no in the street, the most unsuspected individuals could join in and speed of execution is your goal. Now, the most important thing to keep in mind is that someone with an injured leg can’t run. This must be your priority: neutralize the leg. One leg is enough and the advantage is that there are two of them, versus one head, so you can choose whichever side suits you best. When confronted raise the arms as if to offer surrender. This catches the opponent off guard, keeps your head protected and also acts as an upper body stabilizer for the kick. Don’t kick with your toes out in front, much the same as with the hand; fingers and toes break with relative ease, that’s why punching isn’t recommended and open palm strikes are, use the heel instead. A sideways motion catching and displacing the kneecap is ideal. If you miss, you’ll at least have made the leg double sideways and if not breaking something is at least extremely painful; a straight blow to the knee will make the opponent feel sick and if hard enough will have them out of the game for long enough for you to get away. Also, on camera, it doesn’t show you to be either an expert or willing to inflict purposeful injury, rather a clumsy, spur of the moment way out. Now start practising at home so your “clumsiness” is highly effective. Like the man said, the more you do it, the better at it you are.

Long Post, but worth the read if you have the time. I've only been in a half dozen street fights in my adult life. Four of those attackers I've put in the hospital. Here's the breakdown of each fight/defense. 1. Attacker came at me low and hard like a football tackle. I leaned into it spreading my legs, and brought both hands down on his collarbones, then proceeded to grab his now horizontal body at the waist by reaching over him. Using his momentum, I picked up his waist, and dead dropped his head on the concrete. He was out like a light and for a while I thought I might have killed him. He walked around with a neck brace for quite some time after the incident. 2. Attacker tried a frontal kick on me, which I promptly grabbed at the calf and spun him forcibly off balance and onto the ground, breaking his wrist. 3. Attacker poked me in the ribs with a nightstick from behind. Instinctively I reached around to disarm him of the baton, and in doing so folded his wrist forward to the point it snapped, again breaking a wrist. Turned out he was an overzealous MP from the base, and thinking quickly I hauled him out of the club and drove him to base medical in his own truck. I dived for the bushes before anyone figured out why he was there. Evasion and Escape was the better part of valor that night. 4. The was a somewhat drunken Marine that tried to attack me while I was laying down with my eyes closed on the launch boat to the US Marine prepositioning ship I worked on as a contractor. That first attack caught me completely by surprise, I barely had time enough to stand and sweep his feet while I threw him to the deck between the launch boat chairs, and the crew immediately broke up the fight. Back on the quarterdeck of the ship I quietly walked up to him and offered we go somewhere away from others to 'finish it'. He began making a scene (in front of the Officer of the Deck and an armed Marine guard), so I turned to walk away. The SOB hit me in the back of the head as I was walking. The really got my blood boiling, I whipped around grabbing his throat with my off hand and punching him like a jackhammer into a single aimpoint on his left face at the cheek. It was maybe 5 or 6 hard rapid blows and by the time I finished I was on top of him on the deck with my legs to either side. By this time he managed to grab my hair (as a contractor I kept it long at the time). I still had a firm grip on his throat. I remember the Marine guard pointing the muzzle of his M-16 between us, screaming to let him go. I agreed so long as he'd let go of my hair first. As soon as he released I did too, and the miserable SOB actually BIT my hand, causing one last haymaker punch to that aimpoint on his face, with enough force to flip him over onto his fact. I stood and walked back from the crowd rushing in. I remember looking in one of the vehicle mirrors on the Roll On - Roll Off deck and not finding a mark on me. However, I was drenched from my collar to my belt in blood... his. The next day he looked like he got hit by a truck. The point I aimed at had stitches from his nose to his ear, and that side of his face was swollen so bad his left eye was nothing but a blotted purple slit, and even his right eye was barely open from the swelling that carried over to the side I didn't hit. I made a tactical error in hitting the same spot, not only did it leave serious injuries, I could have just as likely killed him. But that's what people get for attacking me from behind like the cowards they sometimes are. I don't like to fight, but I also don't accept losing a fight by not giving it my all. Each of these attackers chose to attack me, I didn't go looking for a fight. The fact that I tend to be soft spoken and in a respectful manner they probably saw as "weak", to their great peril. SSG. "Crowd the kicker" was a something I employed when I fought. I read Musashi's Go Rin No Sho in the 90s when I was studying Tang Soo Do. The Book of Fire describes two concepts that relate this strategy: "To Hold Down The Pillow" and "To Tread Down The Sword". I thought about this a lot, and without intending to do so, I found myself incorporating these ideas. Stepping on your opponent's leading foot when they least expect it is the perfect "atemi" (to borrow the Japanese term)--it distracts and disrupts at the same time, throwing off their rhythm while forestalling their next movements. It's particularly effective against kickers. Doing this while crowding the opponent--"sticking" closely to them, occupying their space rather than letting them invade yours--played to my strengths (good timing/fast hands) while taking away their strengths (usually, quick feet/strong kicks). This wasn't something we were taught, just an insight I picked up from reading about martial strategy. It was useful later in life, too, when I started studying Aikido.

Before I ever watched this, or knew who Dale Gribble was, I carried a baggy (one of the old styles where you had to flip over the plastic lip to sort of seal it) with dirt AND cayenne in it. I did this because I was bullied on my way to school almost every week. Multiple times I utilized this technique on bullies and one dog, and it was 110% effective every single time. It's so effective that as a 40 year old, I have told my partner about it and she carries a baggy of dirt and cayenne in her purse.. just in case. As a side note, it is also not illegal to carry dirt and spices in your purse and in the car.

My Dad taught me the foot stomp, but I never had much success with it, tho. In 9th grade this kid picked a fight with me at school. We would settle it in the stairwell the next day. He was big into karate and I didn’t know anything. So I asked my dad for a good opening move and he said step on his foot and follow up with an uppercut. I did what he said. in hindsight it had a snowballs chance. However I did it with such confidence and faith that I immediately gained the upper hand and he was in big trouble trapped up against the wall and taking damage unable to strike effectively. So he panicked and does the first self defense move you learn, knee to the crotch, and said im sorry. He hit me so hard my grandkids felt it. He hit me so hard three seniors had to carry me out of that stairwell. I was paralyzed for 15 minutes. The school was so upset about what he did that they only suspended him, not me. Boys used to fight so regularly that the worst injury was a blackeye or a bloody nose. you were considered a coward if you fought dirty. nowadays, kids gouge eyes, sucker punch, use weapons, 2 on 1, etc.

Another "dirty" but effective technique I employed using this "crowding" principle involved blocking with my shins. Mine were tough because as a young black belt, I was training hard against fully grown men, and we did not wear pads, ever. It was light contact sparring (if you get hit, it's your fault; if you get hurt, it's your opponent's fault). When we blocked, we blocked hard, or else. That tends to toughen up those harder places on the body. Thai kickboxers understand this. If you've hardened your shins, stepping into a low round house kick and blocking shin-on-shin is effective, and it leaves your hands available to do other things. If your opponent's shins aren't as tough as yours, you've taken that weapon out of the fight. Tae Kwon Do people, who liked to wear shin pads when they sparred back in the day, were particularly vulnerable to that. Not an appropriate technique for friendly sparring. I tried to save that technique for cocky, overly-aggressive fighters. It humbled them, and the best part is, they effectively did it to themselves.

The best way to win a fight is to make your opponent believe that he has no chance against you, if beat him in his mind then he has no chance regardless of what fiscal advantages he has, but if you can't get into his head be as viscous as you can. A fight and a combat sport are two different things

As a 135lb man, I will never be able to make anyone believe that they don't stand a chance against me
@pauldobberstein5643 Жыл бұрын
Actually, often a smaller guy, clearly aware of size issues, may put in work to develop physical strength. One of the strongest guys I've known was maybe 4'8". But could bench press almost 500 lbs. Another guy I know took a different approach to being small. He packed a 10 mm semi-auto in his belt. He's a little skittish and paranoid, but hasn't shot anybody yet. Picking a fight, even with someone who appears timid, is reckless behavior. But that doesn't slow many of the tough guys who, for some reason, feel obligated to engage in spirited debates about inconsequential subjects, which they inevitably are highly emotional about. They think they're going to sway someone's opinion to be more like theirs. Unfortunately, those being educated aren't as emotionally invested in being enlightened, don't understand his point, and possibly his words. Like many drunken tough guys ,they believe louder, angrier delivery wins the debate. When that doesn't work, they think they'll win the debate by intimidation. This is when "little guy," who's been sipping a coke all night, sober as a judge, pulls his CCW and silences the tough guy permanently. Size is no real influence on the ability to defend yourself. Pacifism, or surrender to fear, are real influences. Predators smell and are drawn to fear. A knowledgeable and skilled 135 lb trained and armed individual doesn't radiate insecurities drawing Predators. Their calm demeanor and confidence are unsettling to the tough guy. Who may have a brief moment of clarity.

#5 is true and is why I have always been able to instantly measure if someone has been in a significant number of fights in their lifetime. The culture and movies tell inexperienced people that it "LOOKS" brave and "LOOKS" confident to stand this way. To get right in your face with their chest out, shoulders squared towards you, and chin up. And experience would tell them the exact opposite, that this is almost an automatic loss. Therefore they clearly have little to no experience with fighting. If they had been in a lot of fights, they very quickly would learn not to do this. This marks them as having been in 5 fights or less in their entire life. If that. Usually. Not to mention that it's not just detrimental to stand that way from a striking perspective. It also makes a person very easy to take down. Legs become easy to hook or trip. Body is easy to wrap around for a bear-hug. It's just not smart in general. The second part of #5 (eye gouges) is mostly bullshit. Human beings know how to protect their eyes by instinct. The myth of the person who just sits there while you dig your thumbs into his eye sockets doesn't exist in the real world. On the other hand, the specific situation where eye gouges could do a lot of damage is when you can control or immobilize someone's hands and head. So using it against someone who is establishing grappling control over you.. Not that bright. #4 is complete bullshit. The last thing you want to do is try to gain leverage by gripping someone's short hair. This is idiotic. No one is crying about a hair pull, and as a lever it pretty horrible and easy to slip. This guy learn to fight from his sisters or something?? #3 I mean... Someone who thinks sharp thumbnails hurt has never been punched in his life. This guy is not worth taking advice from. #2 is legit, but he's basically trying to treat you rudimentary grappling skills. But again, this isn't some magic trick. Knowledge of balance and which foot people are putting their weight on, is just day 1 in a wrestling camp. It's good information for 5 minutes. Now you need 5 more hours. And 5 more days. And 5 more years of instruction. 5 minutes alone isn't going to give you a massive advantage. #1, seems more like a trick paid security might use for crowd control to avoid lawsuits. Something you could do to get guys to stop climbing on the stage. Not something you'd use in a fight.
@jndvs95 Жыл бұрын
The key to #1 is what the security guard said you do after you throw the sand: begin your counter attack. Doesn't have to be sand, sand just works well because it gets in the eyes and can cause a problem longer but you can use anything that can be thrown toward the eyes. Water, coffee, alcohol, glass, beer bottle, doesn't matter. The objective is to activate the "protect the eyes" reflex and capitalize on a takedown or counter.

I've been in quite a few fights and yes I have carried sand in my pocket and throw in people's face before they catch about 12 punches. I'm also quite accurate at flicking a lit cigarette from my left hand into people's face before they catch a bunch of fists. It's worked quite well

What about the fish hook? If you dont think its dirty enough you can tack on a quick Tbag as a finishing move. Also, consider adding some pepper to the sand and if you're going for the nuts, dont just slap them, always grab,twist and pull in that order preferably.
@christophwhiteyz9787 Жыл бұрын
A good roll over fish hook can beat a guy 4 weight classes higher but after roll over and u got there head turned u might break there neck if u start leverage punching with your other hand while u have there head turned and fish hook pinned . A simple left lead into a collar grab into a leveraged pull into a right cross /crosses is a good effective dirty move that isn't as frowned upon as much as hair pulling. And nut hitting is a act of war .

Tell me you don't train without telling me you dont train. #1 is the only viable move and even then you're throwing the first strike so to bystanders you can be seen as the aggressor #2 You're attacking someone from the side/back you are automatically the aggressor because the person is defenseless - how is that useful if someone is attacking you? #3 Yeah use your PAINTED nails to cut someone accross the forehead because that'll stop them. News flash, fights are bloody and a mess, this isn't going to do a thing and the thumb in the forearm thing no one would feel that with adrenaline. Of course a thumb to the eye would bother someone, good luck thumb striking someone's eye during the heat of a fight if you're not in a grappling exchange. #4 The only way this works is if the person is completely stationary after the punch and the stars absolutely allign. Otherwise if someone is trying to take your head off with a punch there's no way they aren't going to just let you go around them and set up a trip unless you've practiced that move 1,000,000 times and you know that person is going to throw a right hook, because if they throw a left your training won't matter because you guaranteed didn't practice that side. #5 Real practical, tell you what, if you're carrying around sand everywhere you go with the intention to throw it in someone's eyes, you're probably the problem.

If you are relying on your fingernails to survive a violent confrontation, you have lost before you started. Seems like your advice is, "Don't worry about getting in shape, conditioning, or developing yourself, just go see the girls at the nail salon- they will hook you up." Good luck with that angle, boss.

#3 is really dumb. Don't put the nail in the eyes, instead cut the forehead with the nail and then EVENTUALLY blood is going to drip down into the eyes. Why not just put the thumb in the eyes if that was the goal?

There are only two reasons for fighting. The other guy wants to really hurt you or KILL YOU. There are no rules on the street. You have to take advantage of what the attacker gives you in the moment. You don't have time to set up for fancy moves. Years of martial arts have taught me every situation is different, size, weight and speed of your opponent and you don't have time to assess it. You have to react to whatever he does in the most violent and effective way possible to save your own life and be aware of everything around you. How many friends does he have that are going to jump in if the attacker can't handle you on his own? Some of the worst street fighters are the ones who have practiced martial arts for years only doing point sparing. You have to be able to take a hit and give back better than you take. Avoiding strikes is sometimes difficult but being able to read your opponents moves can allow you to move slightly to avoid the full impact of a strike or kick. This comes with experience and unfortunately most people don't have the experience. Eyes, throat, groin. If you learn basic pressure points attacking those can be extremely helpful. Using blocks that can turn into joint locks is also effective. If you punch with a closed fist to the head you could break your hand and not be able to defend yourself. Everyone should take some kind of self defense and practice it enough that they can be good with a few techniques. The idea is to get away if you can. There is always someone out there who will surprise you with what they can do. You can't tell anything by appearances. A life can end in a second. It's best to avoid the conflict if you can. If you can't do what you have to do to stay alive. In close quarters even Navy SEALS fear a knife more than a gun especially in the dark. You might not see it. You won't hear it and when you know he has it, it is to late. Almost anything can be used as a weapon in a pinch.

All great points made! I'd also include adrenal stress training.
@tonypaoletta7768 Жыл бұрын
@@FightFast Adrenal stress training is not something that is easily done. This is why basic training is so hard for our special forces. For me when the adrenaline kicks in everything changes, I become highly focused and time seems to slow down almost to the point of being in slow motion. All the senses become much sharper and it seems as if there is time to think when in reality time continues at the same pace. Unless you have experienced this on a personal level it is hard for someone else to understand.

You want something simple you can do with a partner that will step up your game. Have them hold there fist out to your chest and back up an inch (or two) so they cant actually hit your face or body, them have them throw punches at you as fast as they can where ever they want, with both hands, work your timing, try to parry and redirect them as best you can, keep doing this until you are confident enough to move forward. Then start moving off center and adding counters. For fun you can see how much of this would work against a non compliant punching opponent.
@Blockah Жыл бұрын
The best bet sadly to just eat a few punches running you've gotta be tough for this, as most people have more reach than you if you're short, once in close you'll want to try a jumping choke hold or a eye gouge, throat chop, or nose punch or ear bop, and that's assuming the other guy hasn't knocked you out first or doesn't use his guts to send you flying once you've closed the distance or he hasn't kneed you in the balls. Watch Bruce Lee vs that 7ft tall dude and you'll see what I mean. The best way to win a fight is to get away because the Cops are going to give you a record if you fight back at least here in New Zealand which is bullshit. So the bad guy can bring you down to his level while you're trying to defend yourself. Crazy really.

@Blockah "Eat a few punches" That is exactly what you don't want to do, my exercise helps you to not get hit. There are some big dangerous dudes out there that you don't want to eat a punch from, cuz they are going to knock you out. Of cours run if you can, but thays not always an option. @Blockah Because of my training, constant heavy bag work, hard sparring, cage fighting, and conditioning, I can generate insane power. If you ate one one of my punches, that would be the end of it. "Street fight techniques that work!" Yeah about that... I was once attacked by some asshole who came at me from the side, pulled me down by the collar, and hit me with a knee into my balls. What he DIDN'T know is that I have a very high tolerance for pain, so instead of buckling and losing all composure, I counter-attacked and started uppercutting him with my ring hand, opening his face. He also unfortunately was wrapped up from behind by my very large friend, making it impossible for him to block. So yeah, if you think you're going to make a "fight ending move", don't assume it's a magic bullet. To some people, it's simply an escalation that can be used to justify much greater harm to you.
