Loved the green! The supervisors who not only allowed, but actually encouraged us to submit at least one essay plan rather than full essays will forever live in my heart. I doubt that I ever met a whole term's worth of deadlines in 3 years

Absolutely would love to hear about Anki for essays! In my country we don't have to do essays typically completing degrees (there are exceptions like studying English) but exams or case work. So the idea of essay planning and the whole concept is quite interesting to me! What about you? What do you think of all essays for grading?
@faithlesshound56213 жыл бұрын
The point of essays at university is not the outcome, which students typically worry about, but the process. What matters is the whole business of selectively looking through books, and possibly papers, with some question in mind and then pulling together what you have found into a coherent form. That cements the "facts" into your mind better than any set of flash cards or Anki. Ali (the medical student pictured) apparently set himself his own essays, which he then wrote at speed and memorised in chunks using this method. In the sciences you won't usually be able to recite an old essay in an exam, but there may be chunks that can be re-used. The corollary is that it is better to do this early, at leisure (think Hermione Granger) rather than in a hurry after the deadline. Maths students don't have essays, but they are constantly working through problems using what they have learned, which may amount to the same thing.

How has studying psychology effected your perception of the world for example if you had children and they wanted to do rugby, American football or boxing would that be a 100% no as you understand how sensitive and fragile the brain is or do you separate you intellectual knowledge from particular life decisions also as I came across your football Index video first it may be interesting to hear your opinion on the idea of banning headers in football to stop brain damage as some former footballers have suffered from cognitive issues later on in life even though I believe the footballs in their day to be very different to modern day footballs but either way I always find it interesting to hear how someone who is well-versed in something view of the world may differ from the wider public and what we could learn to make more educated decisions
@FrancisMadden3 жыл бұрын
Interesting question - I'm not sure whether studying psychology has actually made a difference to my thinking about that. I think anyone who has read news articles about CTE would be reluctant to let their child start one of those hobbies you mention. I still think you should be allowed to, just with the knowledge of the potential consequences long-term. You can modify sports e.g. by removing headers from football, but head trauma is just inherently part of others e.g. rugby, boxing. Complicated!
