I've had one of those before and it sounds just as a mid range phone speaker just louder, for $5 I'll say it's not that bad for an old person who needs loud music and doesn't care about quality (again, it's $5)

The squealing issue is because you tried using it while it was plugged in. Not sure what causes the issue but the instructions tell you not to use it while plugged in. Once it's charged and unplugged, it sounds clear.
