Hurray for Lowborn. Such a brilliant book by such a brilliant woman. I had been put off Gone because I don’t love books about music but it sounds amazing. That’s Your Lot sounds brilliant too. I love the premise of The Flat Share, I’ve been unsure, you’ve tempted me. I’ve never heard of An Ocean of Minutes, sounds bonkers and therefore brilliant. Can I say brilliant anymore? This video was brilliant. Ha.

So excited to hear someone talking about That's Your Lot! I read it a few weeks ago and laughed so much. Limmy's first book, Daft Wee Stories, has me laughing so much in public that I had to stop reading in cafes.

Best books read in July Frankisstein by Janette Winterson Fruit of the Drunken Tree by Ingrid Rojas Contreras The Far Field by Madhuri Vijay Burial Rites by Hannah Kent Miracle Creek by Angie Kim With regard to poverty, things have become much worse for any family who has a disabled member. Because of lack of funding in mental health/ social care; more ( Women in particular) have had to give up work to care. It's also more stressful as there is no respite or support. You get £62 a week for caring 24/7.

I could hear you talking about books for hours and hours and I wouldn't get tired of it! Both memoirs you mention sound really interesting and although i already knew Savannah and Melanie had published books recently and i already wanted to read them, now i feel like i need to! If you want a book recommendation from a Spanish-speaking subscriber of yours, I highly encourage you to read something from Isabel Allende (if you haven't already!) A few weeks ago I read 'The House of the Spirits' and it took my heart away. 💛💛💛

The plot of An Ocean of Minutes sounds so stressful. A swell of panic rushed into my body when you said she got rerouted to 1998. I've been on such a fantasy kick lately so if you're into that kind of thing I would highly recommend The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin. I haven't been able to get this book out of my head since I put it down.

Something interesting about the first book and to do with children in schools. I remember in primary every Friday the people with birthdays that week would come up, blow out candles on a fake cake and then take out their favourite present they received and explain why in front on the whole school. I remember being proud of like a barbie my mum had got my from a charity shop and then some other girl would just whip out her £50 luxury barbie. Schools are so bad for highlighting those class differences between children and possibly subjecting them to teasing by classmates. I hope it’s changed since then

I remember you said you were interested in reading more translated works, so I'd really recommend The White Book by Han Kang.. it's the type of book that you get more out of with every read! It's a bit depressing though (han kang's mo tbh) loved these recs!

I cannot tell you what I'm currently reading as I have decided not to finish it, but I'm sure the next book I read is going to break the trend of me tossing books aside. Glad to hear your thoughts about these books - I've seen The Flat Share around before, but for no reason whatsoever I thought it looked like a non-fiction book. It makes no sense to me, but that's what I thought.

i would really recommend the deep by alex rogers, especially if youre interested in climate change! its non fiction, its about the ocean and the role it plays in climate change, but its very readable and not too sciency but explains things SO well, its so interesting and also heartbreaking but at least for me, it didnt leave me feeling hopeless. it’s one of my fav books ive read in a while and i think its an important one

Leena, on the topic of the first book, it would be awesome if you could explore some of that a bit more, especially the experiences of young people in the care system. It’s an area of life that people just don’t know about and there are so many misconceptions which were only cleared up for me when I was taken into care. It’s a world that’s so lonely when you’re part of it, there’s a language that nobody else understands and things young people experience that they can’t talk about with their friends. Given there are around 96,000 looked after children in the UK and that number is only getting bigger it’s a topic I really feel people should know more about. I’m aware I just waffled a lot, apologies if I make no sense 😂

Hi Leena, I recently discovered a Jane Austen / Mhairi McFarlane esque book “The Bookish Life of Nina Hill” and I think you’d love it. It’s witty, it has a bookshop and a book club and a trivia club as backdrops and it’s just wonderful. If that sounds at all intriguing, I urge you to give it a try. And if you like it, I hope you can spread the word as I think many readers out there would love this book, especially in the book tube community xx

Um. You could talk me into reading ANY book, apparently. I opened Goodreads when I started the video, figuring I'd add one or two to my list. Nope. Added them all. Great work. I've been reading an incredible YA duology that I'd put off reading for awhile because I wasn't sure it was for me. But it is so damn good. Stranger the Dreamer (book 1) and The Muse of Nightmares (book 2) by Laini Taylor. She's one of those authors who writes so well it actually HURTS. I've slammed my book shut more than one time because of the perfection of her writing.

I've got to give Poet X another try. I was listening to it as an audiobook and couldn't focus for some reason - maybe because of the accent. But so many people like it and I don't read books on slam poetry nor from the perspective of POC (she's Spanish, I think) - I need to get into it.
