I've purchased both Dior Homme Original / Intense as well as Nicolai Ney York Intense based on samples, so I'm happy to see them on this list. NY Intense is crazy good and spicy, complex, and super linear. All 3 are 10/10 in my book.

Great video 👌 I dont care what people say Habit rouge is still one of the most beautiful scents available for men and one thing guerlain dosent screw around with is reformulation, they are always done well and I have zero reservations buying a newer version of a Guerlain fragrance that has been reformulated.

Thanks Jeremy. I think thats a great point about reformulations.

As a longtime fragrance enthusiast (with academic interests in ancient perfumery) I was initially sceptical of LT’s more esoteric pronouncements. I was also desperately determined to love some of the fragrances he obliterated in the reviews. Time and experience have taught me otherwise: he and Tania Sanchez are ALWAYS right on the money-no matter how seemingly bizarre some of their ideas. I always enjoyed their reviews; they were witty and entertaining, but I took it all with a grain of Attic salt. I am happy to report that I am now a confirmed adherent. LT is my perfume GPS into ‘terra incognita’ - the ‘column of fire’ 🔥 which unfailingly guides the forlorn wanderer through the forbidding wilderness, and into The Promised Land that flows with ambergris and Mysore sandalwood...

Yatagan is definitely pungent and strange immediately but it calms down quite a bit. I enjoy it but I wouldn't be surprised if people can't get past the opening. Not a powerhouse at all, IMO. Try Caron's Third Man, another five star from Luca. I have a feeling you will really like that one. Habit Rouge is a masterpiece in both EDP and EDT form. I agree with Luca that Dior Homme is slightly better than Dior Homme Intense.

Yatagan takes me to a local Indian market in southeast Asia. It has veg-ital, stale incense and musty smells, something of decaying fruit. It is not for the beginner but transports me to a specific place and time in a small village I once knew.

I know he likes his classics, but I’ve never got his love of Habit Rouge. I blind bought a bottle based on his review in the first book and was bitterly (literally) disappointed. I never got citrus, rose or indeed any of the elements described. All I got is an intensely dry, bitter alkaline powdery smell reminiscent of old dandelion flowers sat on over-ripe Camembert, and it did very little for me. I know how fickle noses are though, so I might grab a sample of the reformulation based on his recommendation Dan - just to finally make sure 🤔

I simply love Yatagan. The house of Caron in general offers some fantastic, timeless stunners at a price point hard to be beat.
@dorianphilotheates37695 жыл бұрын
Yatagan de Caron (1976) is indeed an acquired taste. I have worn it, and liked it well enough in small doses, but it isn’t an easy scent to pull off. I will always associate it with a family friend of ours when I was a boy. He was an airline pilot, and ‘back in the day’ (late ‘70s) Yatagan was his signature scent ( along with that other perennial favourite of accomplished 1960/70’s ‘lounge lizards’, Aramis). One could smell ‘The Captain’ coming from a mile off ( I wonder if any of his passengers was ever tempted to abandon the aircraft in mid-flight ). Yatagan suited his brash yet genial personality, but I remember others wilting as he walked by with his rum and coke and obligatory Rothmans cigarette. To me, Yatagan is more of a leather in the style of a traditional ‘Peau d’ Espagne’ rather than a straight-up mossy or coniferous scent. The ‘celery’ note makes it interesting and is slightly reminiscent of Creed’s Cypres-Musc. Yatagan is the scent exuded by musty old Ottoman selachliks (thick leather belts-cum-knife holders-and, yes, I’ve smelled a good many of them) where yataghans (the short Ottoman sabres, not the perfume) were kept along with the other requisites of an Ottoman gentleman - pistols, powder, cartridges, money, watch, tobacco pouch, flints, comb, moustache wax, throat lozenges, raki flask, spices, scent bottle, etc. Perhaps the perfume’s name was inspired by the scent emanating by just such a motley assortment of articles: the combination of the leather mixed with the scent of musk oil and spices like cinnamon and clove, which were Ottoman olfactory favourites. Whatever the story, Yatagan cuts deep, for it is not for the faint of heart...

I’ll forever be thankful to him for an intro to Parfums de Nicolai New York and the line in general. The 2018 is pretty niche heavy on its review and I mean obscure niche. He does seem to knock anything with modern notes pretty hard although I think he was fair to Aventus. Decent read regardless.

I just bought a bottle of New York Intense based on smelling a 1ml sample and being compared to Bois du Portugal. Normally civet and castoreum notes would scare me off but it seems Patricia Nicolai really had those notes under control in NYI.

Does Luca Turin make mention anywhere about the tendency for houses to release subsequent weaker formulations due to IFRA rulings or some other reasons? For example Dior Homme Intens is said to have at least 3 formulations with the post 2014 one being the weakest.

I read thru most of the reviews in the book. The most interesting reviews in the book are those that Luca Turin rated 4 stars. You should cover those as well. I also like Mr. Bojnokopff's Purple Hat, idk why it was given a 3/5. Its not my favorite from Fort & Manle, but its deserving of at least a 4/5. He did give 2 other Fort & Manle fragrances 4/5, which I would agree with.

Just my thoughts: Dior Homme - 1 Star (the shittiest of my 24 Dior fragrances) Dior Homme Intense - 2 Star (no man should smell wear a lipstick and chocolates cologne (the ladies will laugh behind your back and to your face) however, it's actually a very nice women's fragrance) Tauer L'Air due Desert Marocain - 4 Star (love it...just can't give it that 5th star) Nicolai New York Intense - 4.5 Star (really quite nice...but my sample was quite small so I couldn't give it a full testing) Yep, I can see the Bois du Portugal comparisons...BdP is one of my all-time favorites. Guerlain Habit Rouge - I've never smelled it...had newer bottles in my cart many times, but just can't seem to pull the trigger on a purchase. Caron Yatagan - 4-stars...really nice, but it's not getting that 5th star because, unlike fragrances like Green Irish Tween which stands the test of time, this one smells dated to those under 35. Anyway, nice topic for a video. Cheers!

Liked (but not love) the book from Luca Turin. Reviews are inconsistent but critical and negative reviews are a breath of fresh air in the 'current climate'. I also don't agree with some of his good reviews for unique accords (e.g. Zoo NYC) but i think thats a matter of taste and preference. And I think he's one of the few who has background knowledge of perfume materials cost and I think that's of interest especially when we all know perfume is a lot of smoke and mirrors. (e.g. like this --->www.perfumestheguide.com/blog-1/alexandria-ii-xerjoff-woody-fruity) ps. I'm obsessed with New York Intense
