“Good education is not sufficient”, thank you for saying that. I’ve known many hotel managers in my years in the industry. I’ve met GM’s who got the job straight out of college, and I’ve met GMs with no college background and became GM by starting as a regular front desk rep. The ones who started from the bottom are ALWAYS the superior managers in every sense. To the commenter below, of course education is important. But as someone who has hired GMs, I can tell you that if I have to choose between someone with a degree and no hands on experience, or someone with nothing beyond a high school diploma and 5-10 years experience within the industry, I am more than likely going with the person with the experience. Ideally you’d want both, but that’s hard to find. In my experience, though, someone who started from the bottom and worked hard through the ranks is going to appreciate the job more and be a better fit.
