5 Super Easy DIY Dog Toys

Wanted to answer a couple FAQ's for you guys:
1) no this is not going to teach your dog to chew on socks. dogs do not generalize very well, so giving them a toy made out of a sock isn't going to teach your dog that all socks are toys. however, if you have a dog that frequently steals/destroys socks, making them a toy out of a sock can help because then they have something that is theirs that they are allowed to have. to help with the sock stealing, first make sure that socks are kept as much out of your dog's reach as possible. then, if you notice them sniffing around the laundry or anywhere socks are commonly kept, call their name in a happy tone and encourage them to play with their sock toy. this is called "redirection" and it's how we teach dogs to "do this, not that."
2) i never said these toys were long lasting or indestructible. yeah, if you have a large breed dog that's a heavy chewer, these might not last very long. I have a german shepherd so... I get it! When he was younger I couldn't find anything that could survive longer than 10 minutes with him, which is how I started making toys. At least when he destroyed an upcycled toy, I didn't fret about wasting money since it was made out of things I was going to get rid of or wasn't using anyway.
3) PLEASE SUPERVISE YOUR DOG WHEN THEY HAVE A TOY!!! It's not the toy's fault if your dog swallows something, or even your dog's fault. They are a dog, they don't understand the concept of gastrointestinal blockages. They have the cognitive ability of about a 3-5 year old child. Would you leave a 3-5 year old child unattended with a bunch of legos or whatever kids play with these days? No. You'd watch them to make sure they didn't accidentally injure themselves. Same with your dog. You need to supervise them, especially if they are known to ingest things they chew on. If that's the case, stick with edible chews like bully sticks, himalayan chews, appropriate raw bones, etc. And still supervise them in that case too.

Great idea! Just make sure to make sure it's okay with the owners before giving to the dog. Some dogs can't be left unsupervised with toys as they may destroy and ingest them.

Thank you for being nice to dogs. My neighbor's dog was always hungry because they didnt feed her, so me and some of my neighbors always give her food.. Because they cant do anything if you get bad at them all they can do is sit there cause ur gonna hit em if they dont obey u. And thats the life of a sad awful dog. The braided T Shirts are quite strong and work really well as tug toys. My ACD makes short work of most of they toys I buy her at the pet store so making my own is a cheaper alternative. Thanks for the video

Just found this after searching homemade dog toys. I have a 3 month old pug/teddy bear mix named Sid. I love him dearly but hot damn does he like to bite!!! Mostly wants to play but it hurts still. All he has are little stuffed animal toys right now so I decided something to play tug of war with would be helpful. I’m glad all these toys can be made with stuff around the house because I did not want to go spend money on something my puppy is going to destroy! Thanks for the video. Super helpful!!

It's helpful to see the mechanics of what the human is doing absent of trying to wrangle a dog. This is why I encourage people to practice leash handling skills without their dogs first, so when they actually need them in the moment they have the muscle memory to be more successful. Just FYI, you can get a reed squeaker and cut a hole in the lid of the water bottle large enough for the reed squeaker (size small, like 1") to fit through. Shove the reed squeaker through the lid so the tube part hangs into the bottle. Put a handful of kibble into the bottle, screw on the lid. Squeeze bottle, reed squeaks. Place bottle into a sock, reed squeaker end up, and tie a knot where the squeaker is - the leg portion of the sock. You now have a rattle that squeaks when compressed. Once a tear appears in the sock or the bottle is compressed so it doesn't squeak anymore, pull out the bottle, replace the bottle, keep the lid w/ squeaker. You can even reuse the kibble in the new bottle. Easy, cheap and by far my pups most favorite toy.

I tried this for my dog, you see, my dog is a very imperative animal. He likes to break a lot of stuff, and it’s really impressive, he’s a chihuahua mix breed of dog. He’s not that big, and it’s impressive how he breaks stuff within an hour!! Okay, I’ll get to the point, right now I’m in quarantine, and my dog has been breaking stuff like, a ton of stuff till the point that he barely has toys left. I tried this and it worked really good, he’s been using it for the past hours. I’m really happy and I do recommend this.
