The song Nocturne from SOTN actually has a great example of fakeout major resolution, where a sus4 goes to min for a few verses and then in a more "hopeful" one goes to a maj instead.

Nice! But what about sus2 chords? Aren't they sus too? Topic for a follow-up?
@nathanaelfelix89763 сағат бұрын
Don’t get me wrong, sus2 are great as a voicing symbol (as a jazz/pop pianist I very much prefer seeing a “sus2” than a “add9(omit3)”, which is what they almost always are). But if we’re talking about functional harmony (which was the case for like, 90% of the video), sus2 chords are kind of a nonsensical concept. It’s gonna be really hard to explain through youtube comments, tho😅

I am the sussiest baka. I love using the floaty slash chord with the soul voicing as a home chord, as a pivot pont for a nice, suspended, pedal point style chord progression. For example, Bb/C moves nicely to Cm7 and you could play those two chords endlessly over a steady C bassline. But then you wanna change it up and so you move from the Bb/C to something like, gasp, Fm/C! Which naturally wants to resolve to the sussiest of chords, C9sus4 (voiced like Gm7/C). And now it just starts to sound a little bit like an intro to an Alan Parsons Project song, but sussier

For thr fake out major sus chord maybe I'm too trained to hear a 4 going to major 3rd too much. I don't really hear any sus chords ever going to minor 3rd or even hear any sus 2 chords used in my life.
@silphv9 сағат бұрын
To me, the sus4 to min3 Zelda example sounds more like a hard turn or interjection of the minor than an actual progression to it. So that makes sense. I do hear sus2 to min3 though often enough, I feel like it's fairly common. And sus2 in general has some use. Check out 8bit's video on the Hyrule Castle theme from Link to the Past where he highlights how sus2 chords are pretty central to that sound.
@tortoiselover72158 сағат бұрын
@@silphv I think it has to do with semitone relationships causing a stronger pull. A sus4 has a note a semitone away from the major third while a sus2 has a note a semitone away from the minor third.
