There not the best team the defense couldn't play coverage just look at the Miami game, and the offense didn't have the best receivers they went 15 and 1 because they had a stacked team that was great at blitzing but overall they weren't the best defense nor team of all time not even close.

Better than the Steelers Steel Curtain of the 70's?
@DynomyteDewd915 жыл бұрын
The Steel Curtain was better

Brandon Nist no they really aren’t. The 70s was really before passing took over teams like it does today. Many teams back then were run first. The league became pass happy around the early 80s, after the steel curtain
@ivanlowjones5 жыл бұрын
@@SVdreamin The Steelers won two more Super Bowls after the "Mel Blount" rule was enacted in 1976-77 to open up the offensive passing game. The Steel Curtain defense was responsible for their first two Lombardi Trophies, but Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Franco Harris etc, were key factors in their last two Lombardi Trophies of the 70's. The Steel Curtain led the NFL in total defense in 1976 (including 5 shutouts in a 14 game season) and were at least Top 5 in '77 through '79. The '85 Bears won only one Lombardi Trophy and their only loss was to the Dolphins with Dan Marino who exposed their vulnerability to the short quick passing game vs the "46" defense. NFL teams quickly adapted to Don Shula's gameplan vs the Bears and the '86 and '87 Bears defense was exposed. Losing Buddy Ryan to the Eagles as their head coach also helped spell the end of the '85 Bears defense. Long story short, 4 Lombardi Trophies in 6 years is much better than 1 Lombardi Trophy in one season.
@DynomyteDewd915 жыл бұрын
@@SVdreamin The Bears had a soft division during their run. Passing started to open up in 78', in which the Steelers won the super bowl in that year and allowed fewer points on the season than the 85' Bears did under the same rules. The Bears were great, but the Steel Curtain accomplished considerably more than the Bears did in the 80s. The Bears stood above the league in 85', but I recall the 49ers West Coast Offense destroying this same Bears squad 23-0 in 84', 41-0 in 87', and 28-3 in 88'. The Steelers faced the West Coast Offense of Cincinatti in the 70s due to Bill Walsh being an assistant coach there and the Steelers knew how to handle them. Where as the Bears had problems against the same type of offense in San Francisco outside of their one championship year in 85'.

The 85 bears is the best team ever. No doubt, the only reason they dont get recognized like that unanimously is because of the lack of parity. Thats why u see the 07 pats being ranked higher, and why this defense was only at 5
@tufstuff2586 Жыл бұрын
Because the Defense couldn't play coverage put any team out there right now and the Bears would probably lose they couldn't cover at all. This is the best Linebacking corps not defense read next time.

Mike Singletary, Wilber Marshall & Otis Wilson were the greatest set of linebackers on one team of all time, end of discussion. How the idiots who put this list together don't have them at # 1 astonishes me. The 1985 Chicago Bears were the greatest team and defense in NFL history.
@patron40silver2 жыл бұрын
I'm a BEARS fan for 50 years. Lawrence Taylor, Harry Carson, Carl Banks and Gary Reasons, of the Giants, were pretty damn good, too. I don't think it's "end of discussion".
@SuperPrince10072 жыл бұрын
@@patron40silver I agree with you bu that combination of Linebackers on the 1985 Chicago Bears were a cut above them. I'll be the first to admit Lawrence Taylor was the best in his position. That's why he was the third best player of all time on the NFL's top 100 best players of all time. Just a reminder, the 1985 shut The New York Giants down in that Playoff Game in 1985 21-0. That was the only game that I rooted against the 1985 Chicago Bears. After that game I became their biggest fan.

it's not fair to look at the 85 season and all following seasons as equals, even though they had almost all the same players. in 85' teams had no idea how to protect against the 46 defense because it was such a new concept, but they learned quickly. After the 85' season the 46 defense was never as effective.
@pp3k3jamail6 жыл бұрын
Matt true but the fact is the 86 Bears defense gave up fewer points during the regular than the in 85. In 1987 I believe the Bears defense was top 5 and the 1988 Bears defense is ranked number one in the NFL. They just had the misfortune of playing in the NFC that was just loaded I mean you had the 49ers you had the Washington Redskins you had the New York Giants then you had emerging up-and-coming teams like the New Orleans Saints with the dome patrol defense the Minnesota Vikings the Philadelphia Eagles. The Los Angeles Rams were always good in the 80s the NFC was just to Stacked. I think a lot of Bears fans should be thankful they got that won Super Bowl to be honest.

Despite how good Mike Singletary was in the middle, when l hear Ditka say, "He couldn't play coverage" it makes me wonder how he's ranked so far ahead of Jack Ham (#60), Bobby Bell (#69) and Ted Hendricks (#82), all great every down OLBs who were great in pass coverage. Bell and Hendricks even excelled on special teams. Is it MLB bias?
@jefferyroy25662 жыл бұрын
Which list has these rankings? I can't imagine putting any of these three LBs below the top 50, maybe even below the top 30. I don't think its MLB bias, more likely '85 Bears bias if Singletary is indeed ranked above Ham, Bell and Hendricks on this list. It's been claimed the football nomenclature for LBs, e.g., Mike for the middle linebacker (Sam for strongside and Will for weakside), started with the Bears MLB. I can't recall where that claim came up, so maybe it's bs. Those three OLBs all have 20+ INTs, but that's because they played in the time before the controlled passing philosophy embodied in the West Coast offense took hold starting with the 49ers of the mid-1980s. Before then, passing the ball was accepted as a higher risk play, and an effective QB could have over 20 picks and still keep his job, maybe even make the playoffs. The 1979 Steelers won a Super Bowl even though Bradshaw had 26 interceptions to match his 26 TDs. Any QB these days with those stats is headed to the bench or waiver wire.
