It's been a while since I made a video like this and I'm so stoked to finally be back at it, ayyyy! This is a video that I've wanted to do for SO LONG I hope you guys enjoy the saltfest, haha! Has anyone ever said these kinds of things to you? Let me know! Also let me know anything else that you as a cosplayer hate being told, I will very likely be making a part 2 of this in the future. 😉

Thank you so much for watching, it seriously means a lot! ❤ If you'd like to see more cosplay and nerdism-related videos, please consider subscribing!

I was always taught "If you/they cant fix it in 5 minutes or less, dont point it out to them" and "you can complain if youre paying to fix it" so basically unless youre going to pay to "fix" my costumes dont say anything negative about it. :)

So basically, you don't like people pointing out that you made a mistake, you can't take critical opinions, and you expect other people to pay because you aren't capable of creating a quality controlled piece of art in the first place? Sounds like entitlement to me, like you think you're entitled to only being told positive things. If you can't handle negative comments, don't put yourself on show for the masses to see.
@skystrife_gaming7949
@skystrife_gaming7949 5 жыл бұрын
Matthew Knight critical opinions are only worth anything if they are constructive. I can easily take criticism, if it’s constructive I’ll gladly take it and use it to improve my cosplay. But if it’s criticism just to be mean or shame me in some way I don’t want to hear it. When I work on my costumes I do what I can within my budget and available materials, I may not have either to make a weapon or certain aspect of a costume. So when I don’t have a weapon for a cosplay it’s generally because I didn’t have one made or available in time or couldn’t afford to make or buy one, if you then just point out I don’t have a weapon it does nothing for me. I can’t buy or make one right then and there so there’s no reason for you to point it out besides to make me feel bad about not having one. I don’t expect anyone to pay for my costumes, that’s part of the saying meaning unless you’re willing to put in the time and effort to fix the costume that’s not up to your standards when the person who has it can’t then don’t say anything because it does nothing for either of you. I cosplay for fun and to feel good about something I made, I don’t wear a costume to be told it’s not good enough by someone who has no clue the circumstances which I was under while making it.

That clears up the situation a little for me, because I've known a few cosplayers in recent years -- not too many, but enough -- to know that they were often fairly entitled in how they interacted with others, or how they wanted others to view them or look at them. Its an unfortunate fact that, if you turn your body into a canvas for art, then you're going to get these comments, especially from potentially jealous women and lonely, marginalized men. Personally, I think many of you are brave for what you do, looking at it from the outside. Particularly women. I had an ex who was popular before she even started cosplaying, and beating lonely and desperate guys away from her was almost a full time job in itself. I was moreso speaking to the fact that, if you make art, art will invite criticism -- especially if it is good art. There's no shortage of people out there who will quickly pull that envy demon out and try to knock you down, this much I'm intimately familiar with.

They were doing a casual cosplay as toumra and didn't have time to get all of the hands made and some one ask "wheres your hands" in a really spiful way, it put them in a really salty mood for the whole con and ended up ditching the next day ;;

Something that you should say to a cosplayer: -I can see your hairs from under your wig -do you want water? -I love your cosplay/can I get a picture. Reasons: -it may be something that they don’t notice and would want to fix -cosplays are very hot and sweaty, especially during summer -it’s a compliment and for someone who has social anxiety, cosplaying is a good escape (I don’t know why) and it would be nice if someone acknowledged our character.

I cosplayed one time (i bought my cosplay on a chinese website... because I don’t know how to make costumes). I was with a friend who didn’t do cosplay. I’m super shy and I have social anxiety. :( I was so out of character and I didn’t know how to pose... i was so shy... I wanted to have fun but instead It was a pain... i was way to shy and I didn’t have fun. I was scared when people wanted a photo... i didn’t know how to act. :(( I suppose it would have been better if I wasn’t alone cosplaying but it’s ok if my friend didn’t want to cosplay. I’m still ashamed of myself. I don’t like thinking about that day. But I love cosplayers, they do so beautiful cosplay. That’s what I like most at a convention. People are cosplaying and everyone is super friendly. I wanted to be part of this too. :( I’m happy for you guys if you feel great cosplaying even if you have social anxiety! ❤️

Bonus tip, dont touch the cosplayer without their conset. Too many people think its ok to touch your body just cause you're in cosplay. Odd's Nightcore It makes sense why white people don’t cosplay as black characters. Much of the entertainment we enjoy is pretty white washed, an example of this was when a white actress was casted in the lead role of a live action remake of a Japanese manga called “Ghost In The Shell”. I’m a white person, but I have no interest in trying to cosplay as a person of color because although I may love that character, I would not be portraying them in a way that would be respectful to the character. In popular media, across the board, people of color are woefully underrepresented and when they are represented, in rare cases do they not portray some kind of stereotype. So it makes sense that at some point, a person of color may choose to cosplay a character who is white as the pool for people of color to cosplay as is somewhat limited.

My friend does Neptune, and he has a life sized weapon (the spear version of it) and that thing is f***ing huge and it's always a pain in the butt to get around con with it, not to mention we have to help him break it down at the end of the day so we can fit back in the hotel room. So believe me, anyone complaining your weapon isn't the 'correct' size has never had to deal with an 'oversized' prop and have no idea the difficulty (and irritation) that comes with it. I do not recommend large props unless you are doing a photoshoot, save yourself the pain.

My least favorite thing is taking a photo on an app that mirrors photos and getting "your scar is on the wrong side." Todoroki cosplayers online get this alot. Like, we know what side it is on and it would look really wrong if we flipped it. PS. Yes, I know I have acne and you can see it under makeup. I didn't choose to have acne, but I'm not gonna stop cosplaying because my skin is bad. Also, I know I'm shorter than the character. I'm shorter than most characters that are considered short. You don't have to say I'm short, I get that enough out of cosplay.

Or maybe wear an iconic piece of attire that's the "wrong" color, but only because some temp-animator used the wrong shade in some esoteric episode. Then, when a smug weeb gives you a hard time about not having the item or wearing the wrong color, just casually respond, "Actually, I'm cosplaying the character specifically from episode 61, hence the orange- instead of red-sash and LACK of sword -- as you so kindly pointed out. Also, I think some non-cosplayers forget how much money goes into cosplay, so sometimes cosplayers just don't have the money to make a cosplay in a certain way. @@katbriley1759 I agree people can be rude and unfortunately it can have an adverse effect on some people and their decision to cosplay a character they love. When I went to Gamestop to pick up my Nerf Dva blaster (love it!) the cashier told me they want to do a Tracer cosplay but don't have the body type for it. I was like "Oh, please do! You'd rock it!" Ugh, that’s such a problem, particularly for women. Anything that’s considered slightly nerdy and apparently we’re not allowed to be fans. Like how Harley Quinn is a pretty popular cosplay, but anytime a girl dresses as her, people like to ask if they even know where she originated or if they even read the comics (which is extra funny since she debuted in the animated series, not the comics). Like yes, I know who she is, I just happen to think this version of her outfit is cuter and don’t want to wear a skin tight bodysuit. Also, fuck off.

Oh my god, so I worked at a movie store some years ago, and I cosplayed almost daily. The Little Mermaid was coming out of the Disney vault and I dressed up in this really simple Ariel mermaid dress I got at Hot Topic. This one customer came in and I kid you not, said: "I wanna take you home and put you in my basement." I legitimately did not know how the hell I was to respond to that, so I excused myself to the back room and didn't come out until I saw him leave on the security camera. Thank goodness I wasn't alone and was able to get away with that, but who, even if they are okay with being called sexy, would be okay with being told something like that?? He came back once when I was working alone and gave a similar comment, and it was at that point I told him he needed to leave. He was later banned from the store entirely for sexually harassing another employee. Just... ugh. Some people are twisted.

Wow, totally agree with everything! Why can't people just enjoy and respect cosplayers the way they are? Because everyone of them is doing the best they can! :) My first cosplay was Yuri Plisetski from Yuri on Ice and I was really happy that I was able to wear him for the first time. Most random people I met were really kind and complimented me but a friend of mine kept pointing out that my cosplay wasn't good enough because I can't speak any russian...like wth? He also said it wasn't good enough because my hair wasn't bright enough (I didn't had money for a wig, but I have blonde hair that is a bit darker than yurios and the length was about the same, so I didn't had a problem with it at first). I also got compared to a lot of professional cosplayers with super big armours and props and told that only this can be really called a "real cosplay". I kind of know that he said all of this just for fun and didn't mean it, but it actually made me feel really sad and super insecure at that time because it was my first time in cosplay at a huge convention and at some point I started to get really uncomfortable with my cos. So please, don't mock anyone for their cosplay, even if you're just making fun! This can really make people feel insecure about themselves!

I put on my Bakugou (mha) wig to show her, and she came out of the bathroom, knowing what I was trying to "cosplay" since I was only showing her the wig, and told me I looked like a blonde goku. She was just playing around, but listen Linda, I'm a broke high school student, and so are you. You don't even cosplay. And her sister told me that I didn't have the right face shape. Sexual comments aimed at cosplayers (doesn’t matter their costume or gender) is just kind of a really disrespectful thing. In general tho, people are people, not objects, and not everyone is comfortable with those types of comments, so everyone needs to be treated with respect.
@ChildOfTheWilderness
@ChildOfTheWilderness 5 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisPotato1822 it's gross for those under-age characters to be sexualised in the source material in the first place. Dressing as that character is effectively supporting that sort of thing. We should be against under-age characters being portrayed that way. And sorry but if you walk around in what is basically a bikini or with your huge boobs on display men are going to hit on you. It's a fact of life.
@ChrisPotato1822
@ChrisPotato1822 5 жыл бұрын
@@ChildOfTheWilderness I can agree with you there, I do not support sexualizing underage characters, and the original source material is nasty. Although not all underage characters are originally sexualized. For example, Alice, from Alice in Wonderland. So it's disgusting for people to sexualize them, or to make sexual comments to people dressed as them. (I think that's what this person's comment was trying to get at) While I can somewhat understand where you are coming from, I still think, that people should be treated with respect. So it shouldn't matter what someone is wearing, or how big their boobs are... Lol! Especially at an event with Cosplay, it's all over the place. If people can't go to the beach, or to a cosplay convention, (where people will dress like that) and not treat people respectfully, or are offended by that, then they probably shouldn't be there in the first place.

To continue with the inaccuracies one, sometimes things are swapped, added, or changed for medical or personal reasons. I almost always add glasses to characters because I'm allergic to contact lens plastic, but want to actually be able to see. I usually take them off for photos (which is why it's so, so, _so_ important to ask before you take a photo!), but it's still so frustrating to have it pointed out that my glasses don't match the costume. Another example is when my friend had emergency abdominal surgery about five months before a con and was still recovering when we went. She had to alter some of her planned costumes so they wouldn't constrict her torso, which meant they were all inaccurate in some form. The worst happened when she was wearing her best approximation of classic Harley Quinn; she kept the headpiece, gloves, and boots, but had to ditch the bodysuit due to how tight it was. She wore a loose, long-sleeve T-shirt and leggings to the con center and this one person wouldn't stop harassing her--calling her lazy, inaccurate, worthless as a cosplayer, etc. We wound up leaving because it triggered a full-blown anxiety attack in my friend, and it took forty minutes of her questioning her own worth, being angry at her body, and full-on crying before it had passed. So, yeah. Different reasons for different people, and don't be a dick.

I'm glad that you said something about the annoying sexual comments. I cosplayed as Cotton Candy Garnet for my first ever convention, and I had fun....until the end of the con. One photographer wanted a photo of my cosplay, so I did the character's dazed and confused expression for the picture. After the first picture he asked if I could "do "something sexy for the photo because you look sexy". Ummm...no. That made me uncomfortable and my cosplay wasn't even revealing or very form fitting. So yeah...sexual comments about cosplay take the fun away from cosplaying.

@@Emilybears I guess I can't really say for everyone but u don't know who's comfortable with being called sexy and some aren't. So instead of saying something that has some people "squeamish" Say something that u know is a word no one would dislike. Ur complimenting a stranger not someone u know. They might take it in a way u don't mean. Maybe ur just genuinely complimenting them but they obviously can't read ur mind and might misinterpret it to something negative. Wording and tone is literally everything in a conversation. (Other factors as well but taking just strangers). So I'm not sure if u understand, like my point of view but conclusion is that if it's someone u don't know then compliment them the way u would compliment ur mom. U won't go and be like "Mom u look Hella sexy" u would go "that outfit is amazing". Just say something that u know that 100% of the population will not take it negatively. It's not restricting of freedom of speech it's basic manners and respect. Instead of sexy there are SO MANY words out there that u can use to compliment someone and yet u settle on something that someone might not like. U can use cool, amazing, fashionable, on point, good, great, majestic, awesome, dazzling,dashing, superb, beautiful, cute etc. So don't settle for something which a good % of the population sees as weird to say to strangers.

I can't even count the number of times I excitedly complimented an amazing cosplay that I had no idea what it was or where it was from. oh man, all of these are a big mood. another good pet peeve of mine is when you’re cosplaying a deceased character and random people want to make dark jokes about them at or with you. it’s one thing if someone comes up to you and talks to you about how much they miss the character and maybe ask for a hug, but hearing the same insensitive joke from random people as you’re walking around wearing a character you really loved gets old real quick.

I was cosplaying Kili from the Hobbit with a friend as Fili and there were quite a lot of people joking about the characters' deaths and at some point I got frustrated and yelled "yeah we're back to piss YOU off in particular" because it was just so tiring to hear people say "ah you're a little too alive for this cosplay" or whatever all day. Be careful around death jokes some people are really uncomfortable with them. (Some people also told us we weren't "manly enough" for this cosplay - well excuse me, my friend is a girl and we're both 15, why do you want us to be bearded and muscular when we're still in the awkward teen period)

Loved this! So much truth in all of your points :-) One close relative of #2 that I can't stand is when people simply comment with "needs ___", "where's ___", or "all it needs is ___". They say nothing else, just that. As if all they could see is the fact that that one little thing isn't there. Yeah, way to make the cosplayer feel like the whole rest of their cosplay is invalid just cause your favorite little detail is missing.

I have this thing about art; similarly--I play a lot of games and sometimes I will draw my characters. Take screenshots and such to try to correctly draw everything. But sometimes I will be 'finished' and realize that the skirt was much longer or I missed the shiny metal shinguard or something... and then be very afraid people will call me out on it or think I'm not a 'real fan' or something because of what I forgot or did wrong like I wasn't paying enough attention or something. For me also it's just... they are so complicated. There are so many lines and colors and little things; and so every time I think I am done, I take a look back at screenshot or in game or someone else's drawing and realize, dang it, there's this whole other half of the armor/whatever that I didn't even notice, whyyyyy. So this is definitely a thing if I cosplay someday, that I am kind of afraid of people doing, along with gatekeeping... that my costume will not be 'accurate' enough for people and they will make comments about it. >.< Someday I would like to cosplay maybe one of my Skyrim characters, or ESO or something like that... but I would probably have to hire a costume maker(sorry do not know a correct term) to do them either way because it's very beyond me but personal and I would want to like it and maybe wear the outfit elsewhere too.

When I was like 15 I was cosplaying Rin Kagamine to my very first convention. I had handmade my costume and was super proud of it at the time, but not only did I get hit on by a 25 year old man calling me "sexy" but I was also ridiculed for inaccuracies in my cosplay and and the poor fabric choice. I was a poor high schooler that barely knew how to work my sewing machine, so it wasn't easy for me to make this costume, and my confidence took a hit. Since then, I've had so many comments about being a girl that cosplays guys (half of my youtube comments are people complaining that I'm a girl when I cosplay Natsu Dragneel). I've also had people complain that I don't have a certain character that my character is shipped with or in a team with. And at that point I just never know how to respond. It's rather frustrating -_-
