The quote from Thomas Jefferson (around 4:45) that I used, which captures the myth of abstract political equality in the U.S. system of representation, says that “the poorest laborer stood on equal ground with the wealthiest millionaire" (Thomas Jefferson, Answers to de Meusnier Questions, 1786; quoted in Thom Hartmann, Unequal Protection (BK Publishers, 2010), 286.). This has always been the promise, but the reality has always been the opposite, hence the reason it's ideological.
