Male to female random compliments about looks might be more tricky and seem as a kind of come-on/flirtatious thing that we are instantly suspicious of LOL

True, why would you dress to impress a man or a woman? You can't keep it up for more than a few month anyway, if you don't do it on a regular basis anyways. If you dress and groom yourself the way you always do and according to your needs, people can see right away who you are. And your own fashion style and makeup style or your preference not to wear any makeup at all can change over time, depending on your own developement in life.

Good observations. I am no exception. I only wear makeup and dress up on special occasions. I see no point in daily life where work comes first. So comfortable and clean is priority. As I worked on self-love and self-acceptance during the years, I learned to accept a compliment and compliment others which usually confuses them. 😊 And I do have a macho allergy. I have a negative bodily reaction to those guys. Geht gar nicht.

I totally agree. And the compliment thingy is sooooo true xD the chances are higher that it will translate to "this person is trying to butter you up, because they want something" than to an honest compliment so people might just answer with "what do you want?" instead 😅 It's so much easier to deal with constructive criticism. Unfortunately lots of muscle and very little body fat require a rather strict regime in the gym and the kitchen. And I prefer to spend my time in another way and eat without a bad conscience.

I totally agree to all 5 points. I became a stepmon sooner as planned. My husband had no custody of his son because of the law at the time he was born. My husband fought for his right because he heard his son was in foster care. The judge gave him half custody. The plan was that my stepson is going to move to us in the summer school holidays. I worked full time at this time but than he had a huge argument at the foster home and he ran away. So he came on a Sunday night with the emergency service of the child care to us and since that day he is here. I worked less hours but it doesn’t work. He is a special need boy and so I‘m a stay at home stepmom and nobody judge me. It’s the opposite. Everybody says how great we are to take a boy (especially me, because he‘s not my biological son) with so many problem to give him a better life and a chance of a better education. He was in a „Förderschule“ but we achieved the normal school for him. And he does great.

@@tmalloy9 thank you so much for your kind words but I just do what every human being should do. Everybody can make this world a little better. If someone needs a helping hand, don’t close your eyes. There are so many small things nearly everybody can do to help. The choice being a full time stepmom was easy for me because I saw how much this boy suffered. The big thing was the stand for my decision because my family didn’t want me to do it. Now my family is the caring family in my stepsons life. My parents are the grandparents for him and my sisters treats him like her „biological“ nephew. My family worried about my mental health because the knew we have to walk a tough road we a lot of trials and fights with the biological mother’s side. It was hard but we made it.

I think the level of stay at home moms varies highly depending on the area of Germany, in southern Germany it's more common to stay at home and day care is often less widespread, whereas in my homecity of Berlin universal daycare is a right (if not often well exercised) as well as in many eastern German federal states where there is a long tradition of moms working and children going to full-time daycare at a young age. Just a side note! Loving your observations, especially regarding the compliments!

Second that! I’m originally from Berlin (east) and I never even considered being a SAHM, because that’s not what I grew up with. I thought it was an outdated concept from american movies. Haha, little die I know 😅. I live in Bavaria now and the system here kind of forced me to stay at home for much longer than I anticipated. 😒 I‘m in my late 30s and hope to finally get a foot into the job market for good, but with day care reducing hours constantly it’s really hard to be a reliable employee (and I’m still lucky because my husband feels equally responsible to puck up the children and care for them).

Yep, it's rather in the western or Southern parts in Germany. Especially in the Eastern part one year is the usual time to stay at home. The percentage of dad's also staying home is increasing, which is awesome. As we get a bug part of our wage during that 1 year, it's easy to do. That kind of support is sth I love about my country.

I have the same thoughts as a polish living in Germany. For the 5 years living here I got a compliment from German lady once - it was about my perfume 😄 and it was at the doctors 😉 one of my biggest shock was the maternity gap. many partners of my male colleagues aren’t working to devote time to raise kids. My Polish brain couldn’t process it for a long time 😃But even if I am not a person willing to do so, I find it so relieving not being judged about your choices. I love it that it is so normal to reduce full time to 70-80%

Let's not forget two things: a) maternity leave; b) lack of sufficient crèche places -> both lead to those who can afford it financially to stay at home. Since in many regions "Kita vouchers" are only issued for those who absolutely need a place. Interestingly, here in the north more mothers seem to go back to work after about a year (expiry of the full amount of child-raising allowance) and therefore need a place in a crèche. Since the introduction of parent-plus time, fathers have been staying at home for at least the required 2 (or 4?) months. Many employers also offer part-time work, so mothers often work up to an average of 30 hours a week. Positive side effect: new fathers in managerial positions are much more relaxed when one parent has to stay at home with "childhood illness" ;) That's why you can envy the newer generation of parents;) -> in my generation there are still enough bosses who don't understand.

As for the compliments: I personally often find compliments about appearances strange indeed. After all, I didn't make my 'beautiful eyes' or my 'beautiful hands' myself. I'm not congratulated on being 'German' or 'female'. These are all things that one does not choose. I find it much better to be complimented on things that you are really responsible for: A good sense of humour, good taste, etc. But I find it rather chumming up to be praised for unchangeable outward appearances. I tend to reply 'Thanks to my parents'. 😆

From watching a lot of American movies and hearing stories from podcasts I believe Germany is quite different in people commenting on your appearance in general. I don't think I've once heard a stranger comment on my looks at least in my adult life. It's like we learn that somebody's appearance is a hot topic and unless you're sure on how they would respond the safe option is to say nothing at all.

It was interesting for me, that it considered a stay at home mother, if you are home with your child in their first 3 years. For me a stay at home mother is someone who are home with their child much longer. Perhaps because in my country (not Germany) one of the parents can stay at home for 3 years.

As a German woman I just recently read: The German ideal for women is the mother, the French ideal is the partner to her man. If you do not have children, it is a little bit weird here followed by: Oh my god, the poor couple could not get a child. I have a son, but I know women, who always have to explain. I live in more conservatice Bavaria and almost all women over 30 have at least one child here. A Geman man, who gives to much compliments at date, makes himself suspicious to directly want more. I think, that is almost a hidden sign.

Your second point, stay at home mum or dad. You mentioned you believe the social system in Germany makes it easier for parents to stay home. Well, yes! There is a so called Elterngeld (Parental Allowance) to give parents the opportunity to spend time with their child, especially during the child's first year, without suffering financial loss. Parental Allowance thus compensates for the loss of income when a parent stops working or reduces working hours to look after a newborn child. The allowance ranges from a minimum of 300 euros to a maximum of 1,800 euros per month and is paid for a maximum period of 14 months. If the other parent also claims Parental Allowance, it will be paid for at least two months. And if you don't want to stay at home, but don't want to go working full time there is Elterngeld Plus (Parental Allowance Plus) for who want to work part-time soon after the birth of a child. It provides financial support for a longer period of time - including beyond the child's 14th month, as one month of Parental Allowance is counted as two months of Parental Allowance Plus.

The Make-Up and the compliments are connected with honesty. Germans are considered to be honest. Wearing to much make-up is seen as fake. Compliments should be honest too. I don`t want getting a compliment because someone wants a date or sex with me. But I am happy when I get a honest compliment. I am the kind of woman who likes do dress up. But I usually don`t wear Make-Up. The point with stay-at-home-Moms isn`t that easy. In rural Bavaria you get judged when you don`t stay at home. There are issues with day-care.

The main reason for many women in Germany to be a stay-at-home Mom, at least for the first 3 years, is that they don't get daycare for their kids under 3 years, sometimes even longer. My daughter was 4 and a half when she finally got a place at Kindergarten. And private daycare (Tagesmutter) is very expensive and equally hard to get. And besides, when you apply for a job and you are a mother, many companies will reject you, because you might not be fully available all the time, stay at home whenever your child is sick or not concentrate on your work enough. I believe it is not so much a matter of it being more socially accepted than elsewhere to be a stay-at-home Mom, but most mothers have no choice. There is not enough daycare available, and by this women are purposefully kept away from the work market, so the unemployment rates will not be too high. (When you are "not available for work" because you have no daycare for your child/ren or because you are sick, you do not count into the unemployment statistics) Take the small town near Frankfurt where I live (around 40.000 inhabitants). My daughter is now an adult, but currently 160 children over 3 and 200 children under 3 were not accepted to a Kindergarten run by either the Municipality or one of the churches. The Municipality knows that more daycare is needed, but they just don't provide it.

The topic of compliments got me thinking and I considered how I myself react to compliments. In fact, I don't want to get compliments because either a. I feel differently about the reason for the compliment (e.g. you look great) and therefore it seems phony to me and b. I feel like someone thinks they need to build me up, which I don't need. I look at the world and myself in it from a neutral point and don't accept any opinion about it, nor would I impose my opinion on others about their lives, looks or anything else, because it's none of my business. It is different when someone I like and respect or even love compliments me. If I trust the person, I value it as "genuine" and am happy about it.

I prefer a natural look on any day. It just feels more like being myself. Regarding the influence of makeup on the perception of age, I totally agree. I usually wear none and people tend to think I am 4-5 years younger. And I am in my late twenties. But to be fair looking kinda babyfaced and as if puberty does not want to let go of the face is a thing in my family, so I cannot tell how big the influence of little makeup really is.

I think the compliment thing is comparable to the make up issue, it is mostly seen as fake. You don't know if a compliment is for real or if the person just has some interests to manipulate you. As make up does, it changes your look. In extreme the woman looks totally different without make up. We do like truth here in Germany, in mostly every aspect ;)

I just had my baby and regarding to point 2, I agree to it but it is because getting childcare spots are becoming difficult. If you want to send your child under 3 years old in daycare, you need to register as early as you can. Some areas need to register during pregnancy. For our case, we registered as soon as baby was born for next year’s intake but we would only get confirmation of acceptance 3 months before the start date. But I agree, the support from the state is great that parents are allowed up to 3 years of parental leave.

I’m living in Bavaria and I feel that women here do judge women who go to work when their kid is just a couple of months old, or work full time during the first 6 to 10 years of their kids childhood.(Maybe Frankonia is different) Since KiTas weren’t a thing at all until the late 90s most of us grew up with stay at home mums at least until we were in kindergarten (which started when we were 4 back then) I think it will take a bit more time for slow Bavaria to catch up on the whole being-a-mum-and-working-full-time thing. So that it is not only accepted but really respected.

German parents in general have more opportunity to stay at home with young children because paid parental leave is available by law to mums (for a certain time before and up to 3 years after delivery) and dads (after delivery). Their jobs are also kept for them, even if the company has to hire temps for the duration of their leave.

I'm not so sure that's true for compliments as a whole. The examples you gave refer to someone's looks. But you also observed that we don't really care that much about how we look. Complimenting someone on an achievement, a smart idea, a job well done is probably much better received. Personally, if someone complimented me on my looks I don't really know what to make of that. But if they comment on something I care about I'd feel seen.

In Germany, the conception of "alpha male" doesn´t tend towards gym or drink guys with self-confident and sometimes bold behavior. This type of men is rather considered to be somehow juvenile naive, simple minded, not to be taken too serious as a person. "Alpha male" in Germany is more about a cognitive mindset - a guy with grounded self-assureness, able to lead in social interactions with skill of empathy, communication and determination. Jobwise or other archievements of success are taken as signs for such an alpha status.

I stopped wearing make up by the age of 30 or something like that. It saves a lot of money and time 😁and I got a lot more compliments and look much younger than I am 😁and like my husband always says : a beautiful woman does not need make up and it doesn't help when you are ugly cause it's just make up and no magic😆😂😂plus : it's healthier for your skin cause make up, especially when you wear a lot of it, ages your skin faster😁I only use a 99% aloe Vera gel for moisture my skin (cost 5€ at Rossmann) every day and that's it😁

Richtig. Hier in Sachsen gehen die meisten Kinder schon deutlich vor dem 3. Geburtstag in die Kita. Nicht immer klappt es gleich zum 1. Geburtstag, wenn der Erziehungsurlaub endet, aber kurz danach. Mit 18 Monaten besucht die Mehrheit der Kinder eine Einrichtung, und die Mütter sind zurück im Job. Für die Eltern ist das ganz normal - schon ihre Mütter, Großmütter und Urgroßmütter waren berufstätig.

I’m quite surprised about the comments about mothers staying at home with their children. We have maternity leave most use this opportunity but after this time most mothers work outside of the house, many part time 20-30 hours a week. And yes Istay at home moms get judged and moms per se get judged for working, for becoming pregnant, for being on maternity leave, for coming back to work, for staying home with sick children. Sorry the mother part is a really, really not easy one!

Really interesting! I agree with 1, 2, 4 and 5 but I really disagree with point number 3! I really like giving and getting compliments and I never had the impression that my compliments were not well received. They have to come from the heart, of course. Most Germans I know are not into fake compliments or hypocrisy in general.

The stay-at-home mom is historically based. There hasn't been enough support for them to go work. Ie. a daycare a) at all, b) an affordable daycare, so working makes sense.Lastly, women usually earn less even if they're equally educated, the famous 'gender pay gap' (the fact that women had to stay at home again fired the cycle of them earning less bc, obviously, they'd lack the experience in job then...haha. So, historically, in Germany women/families usually were forced to let the mother stay at home, since so the mom/ family has enough money left.

Mir sagt mein Freund auch, dass ich besser und "jünger" aussehe, wenn ich mich weniger schminke. (Ich bin 27). Aber das ist mir egal, was er sagt😂 Ich will sowieso nicht jünger aussehen, und ich liebe einfach diesen Shirin David-Look mit falschen Wimpern. Er muss mich auch so lieben 😂 Für mich ist das auch irgendwie Luxus, mich ewig lang zurecht zu machen, weil wir ein kleines Kind haben, und das tut mir einfach gut, mal ausnahmsweise etwas NUR für mich selbst zu machen.

Yeah. Makeup is a big turn off for me. A plastic face cannot impress me. If there are imperfections, I have the feeling to be with a real woman. (The same applies for high heels, btw.)

I always wonder, if the man in your life who has been working hard to provide a good life & home for you, your children, along w. the income you contribute as a woman, why is it that you paint yourself up like a tart when you leave the house 2B with other men at work or in public. This is how I wonder about those women we see who are outrageously painted up. NOT YOU....But those that encourage LOTS of paint for older women on UT or I see in shops etc. Some of them scare me with their fat lips, eyebrows that look like caterpillars on their foreheads. WHAT is w. that? Shouldn't the money & time be used for the benefit of the loved one, or loved ones? I know that statistically women commit financial infidelity more than men do, despite not earning their equal amount, yet wanting to be considered as equal in society, especially when it comes to divorce.
