True about who you tell about your Thailand holiday. I remember my first trip, I told two guys who i work with, and by mid week, everyone thought I was a deviant. From then on, I'd fly all the way to Australia or Singapore or Japan, even China, take a load of pics, then head off to BKK and slowly spend out the pics from the other location to make it appear as if I was still there. But now I'm old and don't care. I even have a female friend I've known for 26 years coming with me in January. I want to show her Koh Samui mainl6 and, of course, pattaya.

Yes agreed, have always found that to be the case with some workmates. It's usually the ones that haven't travelled overseas or been to Thailand. They seem to think if your going there as a single male your a sex tourist. Strangely going to the Phillipines doesn't seem to have the same level of stigma to it.

Want to impress a Thai girl with food? Take her to one of those Thai/Issan barbecue restaurants where you sit outside and prepare your own food on one of those cone-like barbecues and share a big Leo with ice. Tell the girl that she cooks. Seeing that you falang can eat and enjoy her cooking is something which makes her very proud. Ohh, and get well.

One thing I've noticed in nearly 40 years of going there, is the vast majority of Thai people don't understand sarcasm at all. It will usually go straight over their head, or they will take what you said using sarcasm seriously. Some gradually start to understand it when dealing with lots of foreigners, but it doesn't come easily.👍

There is no word in the Thai language for sarcasm, they just don’t understand the concept. Look at Thai tv. It’s all slapstick and visual comedy.

Always look them in the eye , then you can gauge if they understand u , Some can't speak English but will try and bluff u along shirt sentences but they don't understand a word, I like to talk phil will agree on that, I can talk with a mouth full of marbles, but I've been in conversations for 20 minutes and worked out she is clues to my words

Great video Phil. Completely agree, my mrs refuses to eat som tum in restaurants as she says it’s not as tasty as street food. She really doesn’t like going to big busy restaurants. Truthfully she would always rather buy street food and eat it at the hotel or back at the room.

Thais don't expect foreigners to follow any of their cultural rules, we're not part of their society. Obviously don't point your foot at someone or touch someone's head and if there's a misunderstanding or you're in any doubt just smile. Apart from that you don't need to do anything.

All great advice for newbies, Phil. Especially No.3: Impressing. I've witnessed guys giving it the Billy Big B*llocks flashing (what they consider) an expensive watch and wads of cash. Not a good look (in any setting). Regarding fragrance, there are exceptions, of course. In a particular restaurant I frequent, one waitress always smells my neck and compliments me on fragrance. Also, there have been many occasions where my lady visitor has had a cheeky spray of my fragrance before leaving. Keep up the good work, aer kid.

I would say only tell the right, like minded people. As someone openly gay, I am always cautious who I tell about my private life. Currently down here in Jomtien, only venture into Pattaya for the markets. The Complex is a lively straight/gay mix. Boyztown is awful

I was in a bar on soi 7 I was chatting with a beautiful Thai girl and she kept on sniffing me then she shouted to her mates then they started sniffing me I hadn't got a clue what was going on I asked do I smell of BO she said nooo smell goooood 😂😂😂😂 "Henry Baker" a seal of approval and yes I bar fined her for the rest of my holiday her English good, intelligent and very funny but with a big heart I have to use a walking stick these days due to CMT and Sheueumans on my spine she is always watching me if I go to the toilet or move anywhere.
